The author paints a very compelling picture of the times before the entrance of the 1900's, then brings the story into Today. The school for orphan and neglected boys that Milton Hershey conceived and funded has grown into America's largest boarding school with a huge endowment, and it offers fantastic opportunities for low-income and orphan and abandoned children to thrive. Milton signed over the Hershey Company to a foundation to perpetually fund this school, which is free. A wonderful legacy and an example of a fortune being put to good use for greater good.
I really enjoyed this book by Mr. D'Antonio. It was written to be followed like a novel. He laid out Mr. Hershey from beginning to end, with his accomplishments and downfalls. If you like industrial history, or a Hershey Bar, this is a must read. Some say that Milton Hershey was a socialist, but I have to differ, he was a true capitalist that spread his wealth and understood that to grow, others around him had to grow and have a quality and meaning in life. He enjoyed his wealth and seems to have a good understanding on how to use it in a very humane and unselfish way. Mr. Hershey did not build a company or town like Pullman, Carnegie or Rockefeller, his town and company was built to last and not be plagued with scandals and poverty. Every politician should study these characters and then make their decision on what a true capitalistic structure is."America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America ceases to be great." I found this book, overall, to be very lively and interesting.The only shortcoming in this book, I think, is the lack of detail in some portions of Hershey's life. At times, years are glossed over with a statement or two about Hershey's general attitude or behavior during that period. At other times, the book feels like it is a little more about the Hershey company's history than Hershey himself.Yet those times are few. And since Hershey was a very private man, overall, and his public face was highly sanitized in some ways, I can understand that parts of his life or history must be very hard to figure out. Nevertheless, there were several times that I really yearned for more detail, or evidence to back up the author's broad statements. At times it felt like it jumped from anecdote to anecdote, with not enough in between.Despite that, the majority of this book is fairly detailed, but not in a boring, pedantic way. Definitely worth reading if interested at all in the company, entrepreneurship, or the history of this time period.Sidenote: Kindle formatting is great, no problems.
The author intertwines the biography of M. S. Hershey providing the business, social and economic context in which the man, the business, the school and the community evolved. The author describes the conflicting complexities without oversimplifying. The author avoids getting into the weeds. I am from eastern Pennsylvania and have visited Hershey and Hershey Park. This book gave some insight of what it takes to make things happen?
The author does not focus on just Hershey. He got off topic a lot. Example in one chapter maybe 40% is about Hershey and the rest is about what was happening at this time such as Henry Ford or the railroad. It was so off topic I could not finish.
Interesting book about a household name, how it came to be and the man behind it. Overcame multiple obstacles and failures to succeed spectacularly while engaging in prolific philanthropy.

This thorough autobiography covers not only Hershey the man but his company as well (including feuds with other companies). I found it well-written, comprehensive, and the man absolutely fascinating. It covers an episode in history of entrepreneurs like Walt Disney, incredible wealth and privilege, train and ship travel, and progress. That definitely helped to keep my interest.
