¿Que Es Mojo?   I am in front of a large and very enthusiastic audience in Buenos Aires, while on a tour of Latin America. Over the course of the year, I’ve adjusted to speaking with a translator in places like Malaysia and Indonesia, and I had just been in Bogotá and Mexico City. If you can have simultaneous translation, with the audience wearing headphones, it is a blessing beyond belief, because the audience is with you—the laughing, gasping, and applauding happens (one hopes) just a second or three later than with an English-speaking crowd. In the big scheme of things, it’s a minor inconvenience.   But, when you and your translator switch off (you finish a full thought before he begins), well . . . it’s just a massive headache at best, an absolute kamikaze mission at worst. My translator would stand next to me, a ghost dodging my physical outbursts and stream-of-consciousness rants. The more excited I get, however, the less I remember to heed the presence or the needs of my “ghost.” Some translators, the ones who pride themselves as practitioners of a linguistic art form, allow me to get an entire para­graph out of my mouth before tapping me on the shoulder or giving me that sideways glance, in order to succinctly and with equal fervor catch the audience up.   On this night in Buenos Aires, my translator isn’t that person. She is actually a newscaster who happens to be bilingual. It is not the most grace­ful dance, that’s for sure. There is much in the way of toe stepping on both of our parts.   Improvisation aside, I always introduce the concept of Cat Mojo early in the show. It’s the linchpin of my entire presentational spiel. That intro­duction, on this night, is firing on all cylinders; I’m feeling it for sure, as I attempt to occupy the space between cat guy and Pentecostal revivalist. I’m breathlessly demonstrating what a Mojo-fied cat looks like, shame­lessly preening, modeling the tail and ear postures, the overall gait of con­fidence. This all culminates at that moment when I say, “And what do we call this? Man, we call this Cat Mojo. Your cat. Has . . . MOJO.” I allow that statement to reverberate. And it reverberates for entirely too long, going from a drama-filled beat to an awkward silence. I give my translator that sideways glance. Nothing comes out of her mouth, and her eyes be­tray a slight panic.   At once, she allows her newscasterly character to fall away. She leans in close to me and whispers, “Qué es mojo?” And I respond, in hindsight maybe a bit too loud, “What do you mean, ‘What is mojo?’ You don’t know what mojo means?” We’re having a conversation on this stage, and with every passing reverberant second, I’m losing my grip on this audi­ence. Incredulous, I turn to them with equal measures of validation seek­ing and creeping dread, and say in full sideshow-barker voice, “Hey, folks, you know what mojo means, right? ‘You’ve got your mojo on,’ ‘You’ve got your mojo workin’.’ How many people here know what the word ‘mojo’ means?”   Cue the crickets. That feeling of creeping dread is now a full-on, flop-sweat-inducing nightmare. For the first time since I was twelve years old, holding a guitar with a broken string at a YMCA talent show, I am about to flame out before a live audience, and I couldn’t think of a single way out of it.   I think back to 2002, when I was sitting at my desk in Boulder, Colorado. The desk consisted of a big chunk of particleboard resting on two saw­horses. I was inspired at the time to turn what I knew into a manifesto of sorts—well, less inspired and more motivated. After a few years as an inde­pendent behavior consultant, I found myself trying entirely too hard to boil my knowledge base about all cats down to a relatable info-nugget for my clients, so we could more readily get to the part where they apply that knowledge to getting to know their cats. As is the case today, but much more so back then, cats are dismissed as being inscrutable—so far outside the behavioral and experiential realm of humans that we have no anchor point to hang a relationship on. I was determined to find that hook.   Finding the hook was not about convenience, either. Remember, I had worked for ten years in an animal shelter and was more than a little in­vested. Far too many cats—millions a year—were (and still are) being killed in these shelters. Time and time again I would witness a question mark–shaped barrier of communication becoming a barbed-wire fence that led to the fracturing of very tender and tenuous relationships. It was the “mys­tery” of cats’ behavior—their inscrutable nature being fed through the human gumball machine called ego and emerging as a perceived insult—that compelled those frustrated humans to surrender them to the shelter or even turn them loose into the street. I was trying to, at the very least, take the barbed wire off the fence, so that the human and the animal could meet there safely and begin the process of deep­ening, instead of destroying, their bond.   One hook that I had already started employing with my students and clients was the concept of “the Raw Cat” the idea that the cat in your lap is, in an evolutionary way, milli­meters removed from his ancestors (more on this in chapter 1). The Raw Cat represents the innate drives that have influenced cat be­havior for the entire time cats have roamed the planet: the need to hunt, the realization that they are in the middle of the food chain, and the need to own and protect their territory.   As such, I came to believe that many, if not most, of the problems that my cat clients were experiencing (with the exception of undiagnosed physi­cal issues), could be boiled down to territorial anxiety. The Raw Cat, con­tent most of the time to stay in a place in the back of your cat’s mind, comes screaming to the fore when confronted with a threat to territorial security. Whether that threat is real or perceived matters little. The fact is, if they feel it, they will almost have to act upon it. It’s not enough to address the symptoms that become hair-pulling annoyances to us. Rather, we must find the opposite of that anxiety and coax that Raw Cat quality out to the point where it dominates and eventually extinguishes the anxiety.   Back to my makeshift desk: It was very late at night, and I was trying to push through that insistent, hallucinogenic moment when sleep would come whether I liked it or not. The risk of going face-first into the key­board was fifty-fifty at best. I would type, realize I was in zombie mode, go back over it, erase almost everything, and start again.   I was about to pass out, so I got to my feet and started to concentrate on what confidence looks like instead of trying to explain it. Pacing my office, I decided that it was a strut. It was tail up in the backward question mark position, ears relaxed, eyes not dilated, whiskers neutral. No threat in sight, no fight-or-flight mechanism enacted. Neither the weaponry nor radar was needed. No need to take the feline alert system to DEFCON 1 and unlock the box that had the red button in it, because there was a deep, abiding sense that all was well in the world. This strut was not artificial in any way; it was not a product of how cats want the world to perceive them. In other words, it didn’t come from a place of cockiness. It was confidence that could only come from a deep sense of knowing that they own their place in the world. They could go about their day without eyes in the back of their heads, without wondering whether what they owned would be ripped from under­neath them. This instinct was so grounded that it was beyond skeletal. It was coming from the vibration of history—a quantum communication—connecting cats to each other through the ages. The hook I was searching for, the thing I wanted humans to relate to, was what it felt like to experi­ence the essence of confident ownership of territory.   I thought that if guardians could recognize and massage this present state of confidence, as simplistic as it may seem, it could help them head off most of the “symptoms” they complain so bitterly about, including cases of aggression and inappropriate litterbox behaviors. As I paced around the room, trying to humanize this strut, this confident swagger, the first vocal manifestation of the physicality came out of my mouth—the gusto-filled refrain from one of my musical heroes, Muddy Waters: “I got my mojo workin’!”   The hook had come, and I was not about to let it slip away. I had to wake myself up. I splashed water on my face. I slapped myself on the back of my neck, something I think a friend of mine taught me in high school to keep me awake during class. I even stepped outside my apartment into the Colorado winter in the dead of night, in nothing but my robe, partly to keep my mojo working and partly just to be aware of the moment, be­cause I was so sure that it would be one I’d want to remember. And I was right; as time has gone on, it’s not an exaggeration to say that almost every­thing I have built in the name of helping cats revolves around humans understanding Cat Mojo.   Now, we’re back in Buenos Aires, back to the moment of crickets and creeping dread. I’m on that stage, asking the audience a simple question: “How many people here know what the word ‘mojo’ means?” Two, maybe three people—out of five hundred—raise their hands. I had built my career on a word that was falling on not just deaf ears, but on very confused ears.   Because of the language barrier (and because I am completely panick­ing and without words, English or otherwise), I have no choice but to demonstrate. I am forced back to that night in Boulder, forced to find and deliver that hook again; I need to find something that (a) my audience can relate to, and (b) my translator can translate. And all I can think of is Sat­urday Night Fever. And that scares me.   I have no time to consider whether this would be a really bad, evening-sinking choice . . . so away I go, painting a picture, faithful to my teenage memories, of the opening frames of the movie:   The Bee Gee’s “Stayin’ Alive” is pounding. The camera captures the sidewalk of Brooklyn, tracking upward from ’70s fabulous-looking shoes. It starts to pan up from hem to belt of flared-out and equally fabulous pants, past the silky, open-to-the-chest shirt, finally rising to reveal John Travolta, a.k.a. Tony Manero. He is carrying a can of paint in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other. And we discover, from shoes to perfect hair, the definition of swagger; Muddy Waters must surely be nodding his head in vigorous affirmation from somewhere in the great blues beyond—Tony has his mojo workin’.   I pause a beat to gauge response. Between the increasingly frenetic tempo and tone of my interpreter, and the steady outbreak of knowing smiles throughout the theater, I know the audience is getting it. So I begin to imitate the Manero strut.   Tony knows things. In the spirit of mojo, he doesn’t know these things as a way of convincing himself of his status. He. Just. Knows. The girls want to be with him, and the guys want to be him. Most important, Tony knows that Tony owns Brooklyn. Or at least this couple of blocks of Brooklyn. And that is understood wordlessly, spoken through the Mojo-fied language of swagger. The Manero strut is not a walk of demonstra­tion, of proving. It is simply the outer manifestation of a grounded inner sense of ownership and belonging. The pizza grease dripping off his chin, the cans of paint that signify his lack of status, even the unresponsiveness of the numerous women he is catcalling along the way—none of it matters.   Doing the Manero strut back and forth across the expansive stage has me winded. With my hands on my knees, I look up and am met with ex­cited murmurs and head nodding, telling me that I just dodged a bullet for sure. Having my feet held to the fire by a language barrier is the best thing that could have happened. That night in Buenos Aires marks a mat­uration of the concept of Cat Mojo, not only because I can define it in a way that I never thought I had to, but because I now know that I can show anyone, regardless of cultural differences, what mojo is, and that their mojo comes from the exact same place as Cat Mojo.   From my late-night epiphany in Boulder to the night in Buenos Aires seven­teen years later, to every live performance, every in-home consultation, every class I’ve taught, and every episode of My Cat from Hell—it all leads us here, to this book: Total Cat Mojo. My primary occupation through these years ac­tually has not been about solving cat issues, but about teaching you how to find, cultivate, and hold on to mojo. Am I referring to you or your cat right now? Well, both, really. Because if you got your mojo workin’, it’s a heck of a lot easier to bring it out of your cat. And if your cat has his mojo workin’, it’s enough to make any human smile with envy . . . even Tony Manero.

This is a superb book if you are interested in dealing with cats in a humane, effective manner. I took two cat behaviour courses and the information in this book is more helpful and realistic. It also presents a better way to deal with a cat’s unwanted behaviours. I have been involved in cat rescue for five years, I learned more by reading this book.

Wow. Just - wow. A game changer of a book. As someone who’s always had an affinity for cats, has volunteered in shelters and lived with one amazing rescued feline after another I never paid much attention to “how to understand your cat” books because I didn’t think I needed them - I just paid attention to the cat/s at hand. But Jackson Galaxy eloquently explains an overall compassionate relationship between cats and humans that is the basis for everything else we have to learn/do regarding our feline companions. This isn’t simply a book about how to “solve” your cat’s peeing problem -it’s about the fundamental nature of cats and how humans can embrace that nature for our mutual benefit. And this is such a graceful, compassionate,non-judgemental advocate for all those unloved shelter cats! Actually, I take that back - I don’t think there can be any unloved shelter cats as long as Jackson is out there. This book should be put into the hands of anyone embarking on a relationship with a cat: especially new adopters and anyone working in a shelter. Really, really, really well done.

Jackson Galaxy is amazing! My cat is a different animal since I’ve been following Jackson’s lead about how I should communicate and respond to my kitty! She used to be very aggressive towards me when I would pick her up or try to let her at certain times of the day. Starting with the *slow blink*, my husband and I learned some cat language and realized we have been missing so many cues that our cat was trying to tell us! We are just their guardians and not their masters! Lily now respects and loves us! She comes to us when we call her! She responds to letting in a positive way! She’s sleeping in our bed again at our feet after months of ignoring us! We now have a really wonderful relationship and our play time is so fun! She’s even taught ME a few tricks! I love all things Jackson Galaxy and LOVE this book and if you have ANY cat behavior issues you need to go to the “Cat Daddy” and get the Cat Mojo! AND JACKSON, if you’re reading this I’m sending you a slow blink too! LOL!!

I think the best part of reading this book is the better understanding and connection I have made with my kitty. Realizing that as a pet owner (I like to think of our role more like a cat caretaker) I can do better, and then seeing a happier animal is so rewarding. I initially looked for what I hoped would be a litter box solution and came out of reading this book a more educated cat-person, and some new ideas to work with the litter box aversion. Even if you don't have any specific problems, this is worth the read. I appreciated the raw cat descriptions, understanding more about basic cat instict helps us interpret domestic kitty behavior and I am so glad Jackson brings this to light throughout each chapter. Thank you Jackson!

Wow. Every single person who has a cat, or is thinking of getting a cat - this is a MUST read. I feel like I’m reading Positive Personality Profiling but for felines instead of humans.So many resourceful tips that totally make sense!Suggestion, read it start to finish. I bought this for improper urination issues and found it to be overwhelming how many places there is mention of urinating issues so just began reading start to finish and it made it much easier than trying to get everything in a quick reference. It’s all useful information so I highly recommend committing the time (which as a working mom of two tiny children and two fur kitties, I know it is hard, but so worth it)!

This book has Life experience to back up the statements which for me is better than a book written by a feline veterinarian when it comes to the day to day realities of caring for these unique critters.I am currently following the introduction plan to a T with 2 resident cats and 1 new, senior, feeble, neglected cat... one resident cat is a hunter and a beast (flicking spine, growling, sidewinder, hissing when she only smelled the new Cat on my hand!) at 15 Lbs so while still concerned I had 100 % faith in JG. The plan is working just as he stated -the good and minor setbacks. But we forge ahead. Definitely progress better than expected and we are only 8 days in.Next project is to map the house to ensure we have no blocking, sundialing and catification for all 3 cat personalities!I am mesmerized by Jackson’s knowledge and so thankful he does this work for these little creatures.

I got this book as a gift, several years ago, when I was in high school. The pictures are amazing and the text is informative. This is a great book for children (probably 10yrs & up) and adults who are interested in nature and/or spiders, scorpions, etc. It should be noted that this book does not list every species of spider. It mainly serves as an introduction or general overview of spiders and their habitats.

This book was a real treat to read. It was informative without being pedantic, written in language understandable for the interested layman. There are lots of color photographs and drawings that nicely supplement the text. Spider and scorpion courtship, mating, digestion, respiration, hunting, and web spinning are all discussed. A fine book for anyone who is fascinated by these creatures.

When our 24 year old son asked for a book on spiders for Christmas, I did a LOT of online review reading. We found 2 that were just what we were looking for (this one: "The Book of Spiders"; & another called "Book of the Spider" by Paul Hillyard.) The Book of Spiders has many incredible photographs and lots of interesting facts. I do NOT like spiders, however I found this book hard to put down! If you are looking for a book about spiders for an adult, I highly recommend this one, it is loaded with info and is written in laymans terms.

Chapter 3Now that the SIM are gone and the Washburns are living next door, Mami and Papi decide we can go back to school. But first, Mami sits us down. "I don't want you talking about what happened with your friends, she warns. "Why not?" I want to know. Mami quotes one of Chucha's sayings, "'No flies fly into a closed mouth.'" The less said, the better. "And that includes talking to Susie and Sammy," Mami adds, eyeing Lucinda and me. Lucinda has become friends with Sammy's older sister, just as I have with Sammy. Poor Mundín is stuck without a new friend. But he says he doesn't care. Papi is giving him extra responsibility, taking him to work the days we aren't in school. Some nights after supper, Mundín gets to drive the car up and down all the driveways that connect the houses in the compound. "If anything happens to me," Papi says from time to time, ((you're the man of the house." "If he wants to be the man of the house, he's going to have to stop biting his nails," Mami says, breaking the tense silence that follows such remarks. The night before going back to school, I spend a long time picking out my outfit, as if I'm getting ready for the first day of classes. Finally, I settle on the parrot skirt Mami made me in imitation of the poodle skirt all the American girls are wearing. But even after everything is laid out, I feel apprehensive about going back. Everyone will be asking me why I've been absent for over two weeks. I myself don't understand why we weren't able to go to school just because the SIM were on our doorstep. After all, Papi still went to work every day. But Mami has refused to even discuss it. I go next door to Lucinda's room. My sister is setting her hair in rollers. Talk about torture! How can she sleep with those rods in her hair? For her outfit, she also picked out her skirt just like my parrot skirt, but she insisted on a poodle when Mami made hers. "Linda Lucinda," I butter her up. "What are we going to tell everyone at school? You know they're going to be asking us where we were." Lucinda sighs and rolls her eyes at herself in the mirror. She motions for me to come closer. "Don't talk in here," she whispers. "Why?" I say out loud. She gives me a disgusted look. "VAy?" I whisper in her ear. "Very funny," she says. I sit around until she's done with her rollers. Then she jerks her head for me to go out on the patio, where we can talk. "If people ask, just tell them we had the chicken pox, Lucinda says. "But we didn't." Lucinda closes her eyes until she regains her patience with me. "I know we didn't have the chicken pox, Anita. It's just a story, okayr, I nod. "But why didn't we really go to school?" Lucinda explains that after our cousins' departure, too many upsetting things have been happening and that's why Mami hasn't wanted us out of her sight. Raids by the SIM, like the one we had; arrests; accidents. "I heard Papi talking about some accident with butterflies or something, I tell her. "The Butterflies," Lucinda corrects me, nodding. "They were friends of Papi. He's really upset. Everyone is. Even the Americans are protesting." "Protesting what? Wasn't it a car accident?" Lucinda's rolls her eyes again at how little I know. "'Car accident" " she says, making quote marks in the air with her fingers, as if she doesn't really mean what she's saying. “You mean, they were-" "Shhh!" Lucinda hushes me. Suddenly, I understand. These women were murdered in a pre, tend accident! I shiver, imagining myself on the way to school, tumbling down a cliff, my parrot skirt flying up around me. Now I feel scared of leaving the compound. "So why send us to school at all?" "The Americans are our friends," Lucinda reminds me. "So for now, we're safe." I don't like the sound of "for now," or how Lucinda makes those quote marks in the air again when she says "we're safe." Mami is actually a lot calmer now that the Washburns have moved in. Not only is it nice to have the special protection of the consul next door, but the extra rent money is coming in handy. Construcciones de la Torre isn't doing well. We're having to cut corners and sell off our uncles' cars and the furniture from my grandparents' house from when Papito was making money. Two or three tables are set up on the back patio. The ladies chat in lowered voices. Every once in a while, the new maid, Lorena, comes around with a tray of lemonades or clean ashtrays. Although Mami is trying to save money, there's too much work keeping up with all the houses in the compound for just Chucha. So Mami has hired the young girl to help out. But we have to be extra careful what we say around her. "Why?" I ask. "Because she's new?" Mami gives me a look that has "Cotonita! " written all over it. After I told Mami that her nickname for me was really getting on my nerves, she promised to stop using it. But she still lets me know with her eyes when I'm speaking up too much. "Just be careful what you say," Mami repeats. I guess you can't trust a maid who hasn't changed anyone's diaper in the family! Actually, I can't really complain about being asked to keep secrets. Sammy and I haven't said a word about our discovery. Twice we've gone back to Tfo Toni's casita only to find the door closed and the padlock in place. But there have been fresh footprints leading to and from the casita and a pile of cigarette butts, as if Someone without an ashtray has thrown them out the window. "Very fishy," Sammy observes, an expression which he says means that something strange is going on. Our compound is crawling with fish, all right.

I though this book we relatively well written. I read in en route to and from work and it managed to keep me captivated and not bored. The writing style was fluid and easy to follow without insulting the intelligence of the reader. As a fan of historical non-fiction/fiction writing I thought this novel was too the point and did not leave room for inaccuracies. I did feel that the ending was a bit abrupt and could have been completed a bit more cohesively - but life is never about smooth endings, sometimes things just end.

Would you risk your family's safety for freedom? Anita's father was a part of the Underground and was trying to come up with a way to assassin the dictator of the Dominican Republic, Trujillo. The theme of this story is to fight for your freedom, regardless the difficulties that come with that. Anita's family is all moving to the United States and she doesn't understand why. The SIM (secret police) came to the family compound and searched for evidence of the family's involvement with the Underground. The novel then branches out and stems in many different directions. Throughout the book you constantly wonder, will the family ever be free? Julia Alvarez puts this story together in chronological order and uses many different writing techniques. This book achieves its goal of showing how fighting for your freedom may come with tragedy and hardships, but in the end, being free is worth the fight. In the novel Mami states, "At first, your father didn't want to endanger his family. But sometimes life without freedom is no life at all." Freedom, for many people, is one of the most important things in life. The difficulties of Anita's family, with Trujillo and having her entire family moving to the United States really makes readers able to connect to the Dominicans of this time. This was a heartfelt and inspiring novel that I would recommend to all.

Very informative of living under a dictatorship.

This story did a good job leading the reader about the struggles living in the Dominican Republic during that era in time. The story was told thru one of the daughters. I felt her anxieties and happiness from her descriptions. At times the story kept me reading chapter to chapter in anticipation of what would happen next. I felt Ms. Alvarez ended the story too soon. She should have described more of their lives in America and how they survived for a few years.I have no complaints about the product, I received it quickly onto my kindle, which I love even though it is old. The only problem I have with my kindle is not having a brighter back light, so I can read it in the dark if I wish, without a light connecting to it.-rose

This is the first book by Julia Alvarez that I have read, but I will happily now read everything she has written or writes.I love the sense of humour and the whimsical (for lack of another word) writing style, in spite of very moving and/or important stories, that many Latin writers have, and Julia Alvarez did not disappoint. Her style reminds me of Isabel Allende, one of my all-time favorite authors (I have ALL of her books).

About the Author

Mauro Colagreco was still an Argentinean student at La Rochelle Hotel School, when he traveled through what would become the home of his future restaurant on a little road between the sea and the mountains on the way to Rome. A few years later, after working with great French chefs Bernard Loiseau, Alain Passard, Alain Ducasse and Guy Martin, Mauro decided to open his own place and he settled in Menton, on the Cote de Azur.
