Review

"Its contemporaneity is astonishing... It would be doing Leg Over Leg a massive disservice to not make it clear how funny it is. This is a book that for all its challenges, all its insight into humanity, all its place in history, had me regularly laughing out loud."-Music and Literature"We're having a particularly good season for literary discoveries from the past, with recent publications of Volumes 1 and 2 of Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq's 'Leg Over Leg' (1855)..."-Martin Riker,New York Times Book Review"...Leg Over Leg by the Lebanese intellectual Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, [has] long been held to be untranslatable and so [is] appearing, in [its] entirety, in English for the first time."-Lydia Wilson,Times Literary Supplement"Al-Shidyaq, born in Lebanon in the early years of the nineteenth century, was a Zelig of the Arabic literary world, and his Leg Over Leg is a bawdy, hilarious, epically word-obsessed, and unclassifiable book, which has never been translated into English before…"-Sal Robinson,Moby Lives"It is not too early to state that the publication of this work, in this edition, is a game-changer. This is a foundational work of modern Arabic literature and its publication in English is long overdue — but given how it is presented here, it was perhaps worth the wait. This edition, with helpful endnotes, the original Arabic text, and in a translation that both reads well and appears to closely mirror the original, seems, in almost every way, ideal… I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that this is the most important literary publication of a translation into English, in terms of literary history and our understanding of it, in years." -The Complete Review"Humphrey Davies’s masterful translation makes accessible this unique and fascinating work, deserving of wider recognition and study […] The translation adroitly and sympathetically captures the linguistic exuberance and literary inventiveness of the original." -Banipal Magazine“The heroic achievement of award-winning translator Humphrey Davies marks the first ever English translation of this pivotal work… An accessible, informative, and highly entertaining read.”-Banipal Magazine"Humphrey Davies’ translation, published in four dual-language volumes, is a triumph. He skillfully renders punning, rhyming prose without breaking the spell… Leg Over Leg stands out for both its stylistic brazenness and the excellence of the translation. With this bilingual edition, the Library of Arabic Literature helps fill a large cultural gap and alters our view of Arabic literature and the formal trajectory of the novel outside the West. Any reader for whom the term ‘world literature’ is more than an empty platitude must read Humphrey Davies's translation."-John Yargo,Los Angeles Review of Books"Humphrey Davies has rendered one of the most challenging texts of Arabic literature, al-Shidyaq's al-Saq 'ala l-saq, accessible to a wide range of readers for the first time.... The reader is plunged into al-Shidyaq's critical, humorous, uninhibited, sometimes bitter but profoundly humane, and utterly original masterpiece."-Hilary Kilpatrick,Journal of the American Oriental Society

For those who love language, this nineteenth-century masterpiece of Arabic literature is a must. It’s a rambunctious, rollicking, rhyming, linguistic farce, a mixture of Rabelais and Tristram Shandy, a whimsical and poetical satire. Full of interruptions and digressions, exegetical jokes, interminable lists of archaic vocabulary, citations, elaborations and not least, sheer raunchiness. The title refers to love-making, or to a traveler putting one foot in front of the other, or even to the relaxed posture of the armchair lexicographer. The author, Ahmad Fāris al-Shidyāq, was a Lebanese Maronite who had lived in the East and the West, and was ideally suited to introduce modernism, while simultaneously paying homage to the grammatical texts and authors of classical Arabic literature. The translation is nothing less than heroic.

I agree with everything said above by Paul Drexler. This is an incredible book that deserves to be known widely as a classic. Wonderfully inventive, postmodern before postmodern was a thing, and flat out funny. This book will introduce you into a whole Arabic cultural world that you most likely didn't know existed. Your Baby's Best Shot: Why Vaccines Are Safe and Save Lives

Review

Journalist Herlihy and psychologist Hagood dispute the many myths surrounding vaccines in this extensively researched and forceful pro-vaccine text. The book covers a range of topics, including the history of vaccines and their ingredients, as well as detailed descriptions of vaccine-preventable diseases (chicken pox, diphtheria, Hib, mumps, whooping cough). The authors also defend against anti-vaccine arguments, devoting several chapters to the 'myth' surrounding a link between vaccinations and autism, and exploring the cognitive biases that have fueled the vaccine backlash. . . . Indisputably pro-vaccine, this resource will aid parents as they make decisions about vaccinating their children. (Publishers Weekly)This thoroughly researched book should convince even ardent vaccine skeptics that the benefits of giving kids shots to prevent illnesses far outweigh any negatives. . . . [T]his book, with its extensive notes and bibliography, should go a long way toward convincing even the most leery that vaccines save lives. (Booklist)Written for parents who are pro-vaccine or who just want information about what’s in all of those kids’ shots, this book is a great resource. The authors break down everything from ingredients to adverse reactions to the autism myth. This book is not for parents who agree with Jenny McCarthy. She still claims that there is a link between vaccinations and autism. This book whole-heartedly disagrees, and breaks down the medical research to back up their points. (Parents Magazine)Whichever side you fall on in the great vaccine debate, it’s always in your best interest to arm yourself with accurate information. This book discusses the real science behind vaccinations. (Foreword Reviews)Herlihy and Hagood came to this book with many doubts and questions and a determination to provide something useful to parents who for one reason or another are worried about vaccinating their children. Anxious parents should take their honest, thorough examination of the subject as helpful advice from two good surrogates for a trusted neighbor or friend. (Arthur Allen, author, Vaccine: the Controversial Story of Medicine's Greatest Lifesaver and Ripe: The Search for the Perfect Tomato)Stacy Mintzer Herlihy and E. Allison Hagood have provided an exceptional and thorough explanation of vaccines, including what they are, their history, and how they have single-handedly changed the landscape for raising healthy children. This book is a must read for any new or expecting parent as it is a wonderful resource, giving parents and caregivers the opportunity to truly understand the real science behind vaccinations, as well as the positive impact they have had (and continue to have) on society. Thanks to these authors, I now have a new standard gift that I will be giving to all of my expecting friends, because the first step to making an informed parenting decision, especially when it comes to vaccination, is educating yourself. (Jeanne Garbarino, PhD, Biology Editor, Double X Science)Written in a clear, concise, no-nonsense fashion, Stacy Mintzer Herlihy and E. Allison Hagood discuss how vaccines work, why they are safe, and why the misinformation spread by the antivaccine movement and alternative medical practitioners is without a basis in science, while describing some of the dangerous quackery that is being promoted to treat "vaccine injury" that is not really vaccine injury. It is essential reading for all new parents with any doubts at all about vaccines. (David Gorski, MD, PhD, associate professor of surgery at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, and medical director of the Alexander J. Walt Comprehensive Breast Center at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute)

This is an excellent book, and not just because it is carefully researched, well written, and an interesting discussion of an important topic -- although it is all of these. This book is well worth buying and reading because it is useful.Firstly, "Your Baby's Best Shot" is a general resource on vaccines, and a valuable handbook for new parents. It packs a great deal of information into its 211 pages, with chapters on the history of vaccines, the biology of immunization, vaccine manufacture and testing. It lists descriptions of individual vaccines, particularly those given in early childhood, and of the diseases they prevent. In addition, the book is partly a response to the vaccine opposition that has arisen in recent years. That opposition is, in general, passionate and very poorly informed. It persists because the community of vaccine opponents has become closed to any information inconsistent with its worldview.Anyone who tries to learn about the risks and benefits of vaccines by going to the Internet is likely to be engulfed by a tide of conspiracy-minded anti-vaccine sites, all reinforcing one another and each trying to be scarier than the next. "Your Baby's Best Shot" book attempts to counter this by presenting accurate scientific information regarding the benefits of immunization, by directly and honestly discussing its (real, though minor) risks, by pointing out what's true and what has been misunderstood about vaccines in the news, and by giving the reader links and references to a wealth of additional information. All this will do nothing to change the minds of true believers, as a glance at the negative reviews of this book will show. But they are not the intended audience for this book. Anyone who wants to know what is objectively true about infectious disease and immunization, and who wants the information necessary to make informed health decisions for his or her family, will get a lot out of this book. That is its intended audience, and it serves those readers extremely well.

This well-written book provides easy to understand and reliable information about the safety and efficacy of protective vaccination of children against infectious diseases. There is clear information about what is in vaccines, as well as an explanation of immunity.Interesting sections are included on the history of vaccination and what life was like before vaccines were available. There is discussion of some of the myths and misinformation about vaccination that have become prevalent with the expansion of the internet and social media and have caused anxiety to parents. This useful book is enhanced by references and bibliography for those wishing to undertake further reading, as well as a detailed index.

Approaching the topic of vaccination is overwhelming for the first-time parent. With the ever-growing, seemingly insurmountable, pseudo-scientific junk readily available on the internet, books like these are a salvation.Your Baby's Best Shot breaks down gut-punching topics into palatable bite-size pieces. The writing is not verbose or flowery, and gets right down to the science and basics of vaccines, the diseases themselves and the true risks of vaccination.Written for the non-science person, the concepts are easy to understand. The authors deconstruct many of the common myths surrounding vaccines and the origin of the misinformation. They also give you tips on how to utilize the internet, how to recognize good sources and invoke critical thinking. They provide insight into what makes a poor source and why they cannot be relied upon.I would recommend this book to all who are interested in learning the facts behind this divisive topic. This book is an incredibly helpful navigational tool in a minefield of information.

Vaccines can be confusing if you don't have this book. It's pretty easy to feel overwhelmed by everything that's out there for anyone to read anytime on the Internet. These authors do a great job breaking down what a vaccine is, what is in many vaccines, how they work and, how life would be if we didn't have vaccines. They don't stop there! They dismantle, step by step, the anti-vax movement's claims - deliberate and unsupported MISinformation is more accurate of a description - against vaccines with facts, logic and a bit of humor. This book is a fast read and is a terrific resource for the future. After recently dealing with a bout of whooping cough myself, I learned a lot. This is one of two books I'll be giving to every new mom. (The other book is The Read Aloud Handbook, by Jim Trelease, just FYI.) I've told my doctors' offices about it and will share with my daughter's pediatrician too. The need for vaccines is too important to our society for me NOT to share this book any way I can.

This book is perfect for parents looking for factual information about vaccines. This book addresses many of the concerns that parents may have regarding vaccines and provides a history of vaccine preventable diseases and vaccines. If you are looking for a book with detailed factual information about vaccines and how they work, this is the book for you.

Interesting that only ONE of the 1-star reviews is a verified purchase- the rest of them rode the coattails of that review and regurgitated it's words like a seasick parrot. What an informative read with a wealth of information. I DID purchase this book, highly recommend it to all parents, and the antivax crowd would be well-served by it, too. Maybe then they could get their facts straight.
