I am an avid reader of anything that Ashby Monk writes, so I was familiar with most of the ideas presented in this book, as he has discussed them in his previous scholarly articles or in publications such as Institutional Investor. However, I am very please to find them all gathered in one place with a lot of good descriptions of efforts to create investment vehicles that have better alignment of interest for pension funds and other institutional investors. For anyone involved with or interested in improving how institutional investors can increase their return on investment while at the same time providing the long term, lower cost financing needed to support infrastructure and SMEs, this is an important publication.

I was given this book as a gift by a large family office who wanted to explore new approaches to "institutional investing" and how could investors like family offices quickly adapt to capitalize on these new forces. Ashby Monk's new book is very well researched, thoughtfully written, and prescriptive without being directive.The book opened my eyes to many of the structural changes underway today - but maybe I was too close to recognixe their full effect. This book is going to be gifted again and again to those forward thinking investors and families who want to invest for the future - eliminate the numerous layers of fees, conflicts, mis-aligned incentives and lack of transparency - and achieve better outcomes.

First of all, let me state that the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because it contains several chapters which will be superfluous to you if you've already been brewing for awhile and are buying this book to expand your repertoire (like me). I'm assuming most folks looking to get into brewing lagers and triple decoction mashes will already be well-versed in the basics; so to me, the introductory material in Part 1 (pp. 1-110) was unneeded. However, the overwhelming majority of Part 2 (The Brewing Process, pp. 113-253) was absolutely chock-full of either new information, or it at least provided the logical (and historical) framework behind every little decision-point in the brewing process, with a particular focus on brewing lagers. Perhaps the most valuable information is the author's simple, yet orderly and explicit regimen for conducting a triple decoction mash. His presentation was elegant and tremendously helpful in demystifying the PROCESS, while preserving the mystique of the RESULTS of decoctions. Now I can't wait to try a decoction, to see if I can taste the difference (and to finally earn some bona fides with respect to decoction mashing). For that reason alone, the book is well-worth your time and money. You should see my copy - Part 2 is absolutely bristling with protruding Post-it(R) notes, and virtually every page in Part 2 has multiple highlighted passages for me to re-read (and re-re-read) as I commit the information to my memory and rote brewing practices. Definitely one of the best books in my growing library of brewing compendia...

A very good overview of the essentials regarding Lager brewing. I'm keeping this book at arms reach when planning a beer. It teaches the reader, in a nutshell she'll, how to get it right taking out allot of guess work for beginners and intermediate. It is NOT exhaustive however, and there is the need for further research for the individual components, i.e., Grains/malt, water, yeast, hops, adjuncts, techniques, equipment, building recipes, size of operation, etc. And there are several good books on each of these subjects. This book is a must for any brewing library and helps lay a healthy foundation for success in brewing goals and oporations.

Lagers are a difficult style: the most authentic producers don't bother importing to the US. The Americans that emulate the Pilsners Marzens and Helles won't ever hone in on those beautiful malty flavors.Lagers are hard to do because maltiness is hard to capture. Once you have one though, preferably for longer than a 3 day binge in Germany, you start to realize what you're missing.I don't think this resource can give you everything you need, but its certainly a start in the right direction. As a brewer, you won't be able to go completely down this road without the help of someONE- not a text, because the best trade techniques are not written but passed down.

More scientific explanations of the brewing process, and a good book for any brewer to own. Many books give too cursory of an brewing explanation, and while this may be a bit too detailed -- it is a great companion to Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer.

I have many books dealing with the subject of brewing and I find this to be right at the top of the list. The late Mr. Noonan presents a book not only relevant to brewing lager beers, but a wealth of brewing knowledge that carries over to all aspects of brewing.The art of making beer as a whole is represented. There are 40 pages on water alone. While a new brewer would find this book to be a lot to take in, anyone who has been brewing for a little time will gain much from this book. Mashing, lagering, water adjustment - it is all here and backed up with concrete science. Greg used the word 'Comprehensive' in the title and he delivered.

If you've read Papazian and Palmer already, this may be the next logical choice. Far more technically oriented than the other two, Noonan lays out the plan for decoction mashing after going in-depth with malt, water chemistry and treatment, yeast and fermentation. While the chapter with step-by-step instructions for decoction mashing is the clearest and most direct I've read, the book as a whole is a fantastic reference for brewing techniques in general and lager techniques in particular. A staple of any good brewing library.

This is the kind of casually informative and beautifully illustrated book that my in-laws would keep in a guest bathroom, but hides a surprisingly intelligent discussion of high-quality tea inside. It is not a comprehensive education on tea for the near-expert (though Sebastian could probably write such a book), but instead gives a thorough overview of tea history, processing, and enjoyment. It’s neither too intimidating for the novice tea-drinker, nor too simplistic for the veteran, and it is all punctuated with beautiful photographs and watercolor illustrations to perfectly accompany the written content.

I love my oolong and I've got a large tea book library. This book packs a lot of information (some of it new to me) into its pages. It's engaging, informative, well-written and beautifully illustrated. I would absolutely recommend it to any tea lover.

Written in verse, the story centers on Snub, a young female gorilla who lives with her extended family in Africa's Great Rift Valley. A fitting conclusion to Schrefer's beautifully written and hugely entertaining Ape Quartet. This book focuses on Snub, a prehistoric gorilla who comes into contact with early humans as a result of volcanic eruptions. The physical descriptions are vivid as always, and the ape characters even more fully rounded than the humans. I'm not a huge fan of verse novels, which is why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5. But the idea of telling the story from Snub's point of view was ingenious, and this series remains one of my favorite YA series ever.

Set in the Paleolithic era (about 2.6 million years ago), Snub, a young gorilla, lives peacefully with her family; Silverback, Mother, Brother, Wrinkle, and Teased. Snub soon learns that there are great dangers in her world. She is separated from her family, and only has her new baby brother, Breath, to keep her company. Snub must find her way back home, and to her family. With new and interesting friends, and dangerous enemies, along the way, can Snub finally be reunited with her family once more?My favorite character was Orphan. She is kind and likes figuring things out. She forms a great friendship with Snub and is compassionate and helpful. Orphan is an interesting character and a big part of the story.Throughout the story, Snub often finds members of her family, only to be immediately separated again. This added lots to Snub’s personality and actions, because it made her more determined to find her family. Also, at the top of some pages where a new event begins, illustrations of gorillas are shown to indicate which characters are in the current section. It was a beautiful artistic touch.This book was mainly about determination and perseverance to find those you love. Snub wouldn’t give up until she found her family. It was a very inspiring theme and gave the book character and depth.I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because of the format, and the gorilla vocalizations. Throughout the story, words like “mrgh” or “hoo” were used in italics to “represent” human words and feelings. It was very confusing, but I still enjoyed this book overall. I recommend this poetic narrative to children ages 9-13, as well as adults. The book is a medium length of 305 pages, and is the fourth book in Eliot Schrefer’s ape quartet, but has no connection to the previous three books.
