This is an excellent introduction to the field of SLA, it is relatively short for such a broad field but little space is wasted. The book introduces topics such as the differences between L1 and L2 learning, the effects of individual differences on language learning (including age, personality, motivation, intelligence and identity), second language acquisition theories (including behaviorist, cognitive and social perspectives as well as the usual input vs output debates), and research on the differences between natural and classroom based learning environments as well as the usefulness of grammar instruction. The authors finish the book by looking at what research has to say about certain widely held language learning beliefs such as 'the younger the better' and so on.I found this book both interesting and full of insights from research that can be applied practically as a language learner and teacher. Highly recommended.

This is just fantastic! Utterly so. I first found this in a TEFL library at an IEP, and had to get a copy. This book has helped me in class, and helps defeat all those Lg teaching myths out there. This book is based on research. It cites that research and gives you a starting point for doing additional reading. That's what's so fantastic about it. Most TxFL/TxSL books just claim things, and you never know if that's based on research, and if so, so what. It could just be advice that some esteemed Lg teacher once said, and countless generations of teachers and seminars have been repeating since then (like the so-called 80-20 rule, which has no basis in fact, particularly for early LLs).Some Lx (linguistics) and language acquisition knowledge will help you to appreciate this. If you're teaching English or whatever Lg, you should either have that knowledge, or you might use this book to ease yourself into it.

I bought this updated edition after losing the older edition, which I really liked. I'm just over half way through the new edition. I bought it because I'm a retired psychologist who volunteers as a tutor for Spanish speakers learning English. I like having the sense that I understand some of the theory and empirical work behind what I'm trying to do with people. The book is aimed at teachers who want some background in the research and theory behind second language learning but aren't likely to be doing original research themselves. I think it succeeds well in giving some sense of what may be going on in students as they struggle to achieve competence in a new language. It certainly is not a "how to" book, but it should give some ideas about how to structure lessons in new ways, as well as why students struggle with certain aspects of language at different stages, and why they sometimes seem to "backslide." It should be accessible to teachers who want a deeper understanding of the current state of thinking and research about language learning, with emphasis on second languages.

Wow! This book is packed with important, in-depth, and applicable information about how people learn languages. If you are involved in teaching languages or simply have an interest in the subject, I highly recommend this book. I have only recently begun tutoring adult ESL (English as a Second Language) learners, and have been able to apply what I have learned to the tutoring sessions. Highly Recommended!

This is one my favorite coursebooks in SLA. The book is helpful for those who begin to feel interested in SLA or for teachers who intend to teach a course in language learning. It's very comprehensive and easy to understand. Different opinions from studies on a same topic are offered. Most importantly, it offers fair comments on different theories. This 4th edition also offers good online resources for teachers to conduct discussions on relative topics.

This book was required for my master's and it was much more concise than my other reading on this topic. It provides a good overview without being weighted down by wordiness.

Good information on language acquisition; clear explanations; easy to follow; great resource for tutors; great as a basis for self-guided refresher for language teachers

Very informative. Dismisses some of the myths re: first and second language acquisition,

"Survey the entire history of (western) philosophy through short intellectual biographies of 40 philosophers from Socrates to Peter Singer, in as broadly approachable a style as EH Gombrich’s A Little History of the World. A tall order; that Warburton (of the excellent podcast Philosophy Bites) has succeeded so well is a triumph."—Steven Poole, The Guardian"Forty short chapters offer an informative, clear guide to forty major Western philosophers. This must be the best introductory book I could offer students to Western philosophy with, and I have read far too many of them. Warburton manages to grab some of the best insights of great philosophers, and bring them to the bloodflow of any intellectually curious reader outside of the narrow confines of contemporary philosophy. Very easy to read, and this covers quite a bit while managing to include a few people who are often unfortunately left out--especially Schopenhauer. People will nitpick on what is in and out of this, but we do get so much for under 300 pages and less than $15. I have fallen in love with this little book, and now I have to hurry up and find a way to include it in my classes. The Audible version (I bought both) made for a good road trip, too!

The author sets himself a major task: to explain briefly and clearly but not superficially some of the ideas of several prominent names in the history of western philosophy. Of course, one could always quibble about the authors he selects as well as those he omits. But he does identify least some of the important ideas of the ones he selects. In a book this short with so many authors covered, one cannot expect too much. It's enough if he gets the reader to look in more depth at original sources and learned commentary on these. And I think many readers will do just that. So as a first book on the subject, it's fine. But let no one come away from this book thinking that they really have a good understanding of the history of philosophy. For this, F. Copleston is better.

I love this book. It's fascinating... before talking about their ideas, the author shares interesting details about what the philosophers were like as people: how they lived, what inspired them, and sometimes how they thought about each others' work. The narratives are fun and memorable, and really help frame philosophy not as an abstract academic subject but more as a practical effort by real human beings to make sense of the big questions we all wrestle with in life. I hope Nigel Warburton makes more of these books. A Little History of Philosophy offers a friendly overview of some big ideas in Western philosophy, and I'd love to read his take on some of the great Eastern philosophers' lives and ideas.

This book serves its purpose of summarizing the history of philosophy following the history of philosophers in an accessible language. Often after listening to each chapter (yes, I've "read" the audiobook version) I was much more curious about the work of the philosopher than what 9 or 10 minutes of narration was capable of covering. I ended up spending time reading stuff in Wikipedia as much as listening to the audiobook. I recommend this title for those seeking a basic introduction to philosophy or for those interesting to revisiting philosophical concepts learned at school.

It is a "little" history in that it greatly reduces the enquiry of some of the greatest philosophers who ever lived, but I guess it's only meant to whet your appetite for more. Accessible to middle schoolers with support and discussion.

This book is one of the single greatest reads ever in the sense that it points you to a number of great books (I myself have downloaded at least 20 of the aforementioned books) and that it really shows you how to think and impacts the way you look at the world it also showed me as the religious person I am that philosophy is not always anti-Semitic but in this case provided me with many cases for my religion that I would have never thought about or of. A must read for any person or community.

I have never read a book written by Nigel Warburton, so I had not known what to expect. But, this book is a great journey through the history of philosophy. The author describes philosophers and their thoughts in a chronological way, so you can see how the world was changing in the past. In this way, you can easily grasp their ideas. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn more about great philosophers, their methods and how they had lived.

I bought this for my 12 yr old daughter for xmas after she had expressed an interest in reading about philosophy. My husband decided to take a peek and COULD NOT put it down until he finished. He LOVED this book - I'm telling you he RAVED about it (he reads quite a bit). He is excited to get others in this series that cover topics of history/etc. I read just the first chapter myself and throughout it was quite well done. I'm not sure yet if it will click for my 12 yr old. It's certainly not out of reach for that age group, but we'll see. I"ll try to remember to post an update when she picks it up.

I'm still reading this book, and I'll probably have to read it a few more times, but this has my life written in this book! You may not even realize that you were shamed or guilt ridden, because I didn't look at my youth like that. My parents still think this is the correct way to teach children, and they've even wanted me to raise my children under these incorrect ways. I've refused to raise my children like I was raised, and it actually makes my parents really angry with me. My counselor recommended this book to me, and I am so glad that I'm reading it! It is sure changing the way I feel about myself as a human being. I am learning that I don't have to be or do everything perfectly to be accepted into society. That issue all by itself has made continued to haunt and stress me out. I highly recommend this book if you have any of the issues listed above regarding how this book can help yourself, your siblings, or your friends. It will open a whole new world for anyone who, like me, doesn't feel like they fit in, have self esteem issues from childhood, or isolate themselves from the outside world. I'm not claiming it will be an immediate quick fix, but with patience and following through will make it so worth it!

I just finished reading a 130 page book written by Jane Middelton-Moz titled "Shame & Guilt - Masters of Disguise", this book opened up my mind and heart to consider the possibilities of why some people cannot follow through with their words. I found myself relieved after finishing this book because for once someone finally put into words what goes on in reality in our inner worlds in practical, concise and work-able terms. I highly recommend this book to every one so you may discover the signs of how we sometimes decide to not face, feel or free shame and guilt. If we do not grasp the masters of disguise that influence us to behave on the surface to fulfill other agendas; our lives will continue to unconsciously spin out of control and we will not know where or why we were lead astray. What personally struck me was remembering how I suffered for a long time extreme shyness, embarrassment and feelings of being inferior to others. There was a time in my life that it was most desirable for my circle of influence for me to stand by with a smile on my face and say nothing. There was a time in my life that I was isolated for articulating how disconnected my perception was from the larger crowd. This isolation served as means for others to punish me with shame and guilt or hide from their own shame and guilt.

You have to get through the first chapter and the book is good. The only problem I had with it is that there is really no solution to the shame and guilt that you have been through. It explains how these feelings got there in the first place. Good read. Will definitely help me to not raise my children with shame and guilt.

There are a vast number of books on shame currently and their number increases daily. Shame is the new problem for human beings; where before there was other evaluations. However, this book is clear, easy to read and does a marvelous example of illuminating this debilitating problem. It is short, to the point, and invaluable.

This book is pretty great if you have any history of being shamed and resulting guilt problems. Think if you ever had parents or a significant partner in your life who constantly put you down, expected you to live up to unrealistic expectations, and made you feel like you had no value. Particularly if this happened in childhood when you had little in the way of skills for dealing with that sort of treatment. It is written in a fairly easy to read format with "fairy tale" examples that are pretty clear on all of the concepts, so it's not a super dry read either. The only complaint is that parts of it are a little repetitive.Still, it has helped me to see how my childhood effected the way i relate to people today and made some of my least healthy behaviors much more evident but also something I can understand instead of feel ashamed of.Great therapeutic book.

Excellent book on shame and guilt, I recommend it to everyone of us who wants to have a strong and clear understanding of this internal behavior and who wants to start a path to recovery. Thanks to the author for this excellent material.

Great book.

good
