This is the best book so far on language, the brain, and music. It is highly technical, especially the first five chapters. Nonspecialists with a serious interest can get through the last two ("Meaning" and "Evolution") but the first five are hard going unless you are fairly advanced. Patel reviews an enormous, and almost entirely very new, literature on similarities and differences at the micro level between language and music. Overall, music is clearly related to language in many ways, but equally clearly a separate realm--a different communicative modality. He also points out that music and its meanings are learned. We are not born knowing that minor key is "sad"; that's a recent west-European idea, unknown to the rest of the universe. We have to learn about the pastorality of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, and so on. On the other hand, lullabyes sound like mothers shushing their babies, and I would add that laments in every culture sound like ordinary weeping. Still, most musical meanings appear to be culturally learned. This is an excellent book, and I am duly impressed with all of it, but I do have some modest points to raise. First, I would find music and language somewhat closer than he does. He rules out of consideration a number of intermediate forms--chant, rhythmic speech (like African-American sermons), incantation, word-music poetry (like Russian romantic lyrics), children's play-games, and a great deal more. It seems that a huge percentage of human communication, including much of the most important religious material in every culture, is in that neglected border zone. Something very important is here and is being missed. Second, he concludes language definitely evolved, but music is a rather recent invention--not an evolved part of communication. I am usually highly allergic to "genes as destiny," and this is surely the first time I ever argued for a genetic explanation against a learning-based one! But I can't separate music and language enough to see music as a recent invention. It depends on some of the same recursive hierarchic-nesting systems of planning as language does; it is universal among humans; it is deeply important; it seems a physical need for a lot of people. Of course I cannot be sure if this means there really is an evolved mechanism, and the question remains open. Third, he rather misses the relevance of bird song. He is aware of, but strangely downplays, recent work showing that many (most?) songbirds learn their songs and use them to recognize their mates, neighbors, local dialect sharers, and so on. Birds also use song to keep in touch with their families, show their levels of health (as pointed out by Marlene Zuk), show their reproductive status, find each other, and much else. They also use song to communicate their mood states: level of arousal, type of arousal, and more. This is important, as will appear below. Many songbirds are quite brilliant composers; mockingbirds and many others incorporate all sorts of learned noises into their songs, change the noises to fit their song patterns, work them into original phrases, and so on. Of course no bird comes close to composing even a simple song in the human sense (i.e. a single hierarchically-nested composition using phrases to carry out an overall plan). Bird song has mere "phrase structure grammar," to be technical; they don't do sentences. (No nonhuman animal is known to.) But they are doing something more than just marking territory and finding a mate. Actually, many of the best singers mate for life and don't need to find a mate in most years. Yet they and their mates often sing to each other. Also, many birds sing all year round, not just in the breeding season. We don't know what they are saying, but obviously a lot. Very simple calls do fine for territory-and-mating. Song is incredibly dangerous (hawks and cats home in on it) and expensive (it takes a lot of brain tissue, enough to be a real cost in flying). If the simple and humble songs of birds are this complex and demanding, human music must be a really major enterprise, far more important than social scientists have allowed till now. Bird songs are important because no nonhuman primates and very few other mammals are known to have complex learned songs. Bird songs are about our only models. (Whales sing too, but don't make great lab animals.) I think music evolved, and did so to handle the management, manipulation, and communication of broad, general, but intense mood-states. Language handles the specific cognitive information; music handles the powerful but unsayable moods. Partly, the moods are directly represented in the music (as in lullabyes and laments); partly we learn our cultures' rules about communicating. There is a great deal more to say about this, especially when one folds religious chants into the mix. We need more dialogue and better cross-cultural and cross-species knowledge. Is there a group out there working on this?

I bought this book because I had seen it mentioned in a few other books I had read on the topic of music and the brain. Oliver Sacks and Daniel Levitin have both referenced this work at some time. I am, as a music teacher in public schools, always looking for ways to strengthen the argument for keeping music instruction alive in the public schools, and have always believed that the links between learning language and learning music might be one of the building blocks of this argument. I have only just started reading this dense volume, but it is chock full of rigorous research and is very accessible even to regular people. It has been written to be accessible either to musicians -which I am- or neurologists-which I am not, and in the reading I have done so far, this seems to be the case. It is a book also which is meant to be read over time, and not necessarily in the order as it is presented. Each of the sections can stand alone, and I have found even that I can dip into it for a particular bit of information and come away with something new to add to my understanding of how music, language and the brain all work together.

this is the book! Extremely well written and VERY thorough. Patel's "Music, Language, and the Brain" represents presumably most (if not all) of the data that has been found thus far at the crossroads of music, language, and cognition. It does get technical from time to time but we're dealing with a technical topic and as a musician with only cursory knowledge of linguistics and cognition I still found the technical data well presented and very understandable. There are small points here and there that I might disagree with (based on my experience as a musician) however in every case it is made clear that these points are hypotheses of the author and further research needs to be done. This book isn't for everyone but for those interested in what connections can currently be made, what connections can NOT be made and possible future research in the field of music/language cognition, this volume is complete and enjoyable!

I don't think so, but I admit I didn't find it as difficult as rumored. It IS very detailed. Basically, it's a comparison of the linguistic aspects of pitch, timbre and rythm between language and music. Many of the details, all backed up by annotated research studies, are quite interesting. By themselves, they don't provide an answer to the big question of the evolutionary relationships between the two. Speculations on this are provided in the last chapter. I'm now reading Mithren's SINGING NEANDERTHALS for a more bluesky view. This book, the book reviewed, is a necessary prerequisite to any of that more general work and I would recommend it to any student of language or music.

I found this book to be a drudge to read. I was a professional musician as well as a board certified psychiatrist. And it was pedantic to the max. Little about the brain. Music and language sections were very dry. Quite pedantic.

A dense and difficult work. Being neither a musician nor a neurologist, the work was difficult at best. I was looking for something that would help students. This would help upper level and graduate students who already know the field, but not beginning undergrads.

I actually recently began reading this series and then found out it's now being released stateside which made me ecstatic. I adore Iris. It seems being a modern Japanese woman combined with a noble girl in an rooms game really works for her. She really begins proving herself after having her heart broken by that stupid second prince. She has such a devoted team she works with, too. I also love her parents. Can't wait for the next book.

A female accounted gets reborn as a duke's daughter, the antagonist in one of her favorite visual novels. She manages to avoid her original ending and become the acting fief lord instead. Using modern economical knowledge she starts working towards the betterment of the people in the fiefdom.It is an entertaining story about people and managing a domain - a slice of life. There is no action and no romance, which I like. I like the drawing style. I would have liked a bit more plot, big reforms rarely go smoothly and there us a hint of succession trouble. Maybe we will see more of this in future parts?All in all, a good first part of series. Looking forward to reading more.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the kind of world-building reincarnation story that you wanted. Ladies will enjoy some of the drama sprinkled here and there, and us guys will love the technical aspects woven into the story too (albeit still a bit too light on those elements as some developments seem too "convenient" but I digress).I enjoy this manga a lot, and I have a feeling you will too. Definitely worth getting the kindle version at least to support the author so they can keep developing this awesome world. I have a feeling this series will be a fantastic and easy re-read for me as well, much more so than it would be had it been in a strictly light novel format.

first off i think the price is to high. i dont feel the story itself or its length deserves $10. the storyline is ok and the characters are a bit generic. nothing surprising happens but i dont regret i read it. the art is nice and clear. if book 2 comes out with the same length n price im not sure ill buy it.

I love this series! The main heroine makes me laugh with her personality, she not normal airhead heroine that is magically all powerful when she gets to the new world but she applies herself and what she does know from her pervious life, and the characters around her are cute, a little unrealistic but they have character growth which is great to me! I’m always a fan at seeing the bad guy have a chance at being the hero!

A heroine that thinks on her feet! Outstanding! I look forward to reading the future installments of the manga! I can't wait for the next volume!

I quite like this series. The protagonist is intelligent and stable. The issues that arise tend to be more realistic than most "another world" novels.

I just received this today. That was quick, so kudos to Amazon.I read a lot of the reviews on this book and it sounded like it was probably very well detailed regarding specific cuts of meat that we're familiar with from the grocer's meat case. After all, it says, "...takes the mystery out of butchering, covering everything you need to know to produce your own expert cuts of beef, venison, pork, lamb, poultry, and small game." That isn't the case, though, at least not for me, and i've been hunting and processing game for a very long time so I have half an idea about the anatomy of deer. I just wanted to be able to extract more commercial types of cuts from my take so I could better prepare the meats and this book sounded like it would provide that information.There are 30 pages of recipes and only 11 pages on how to find and cut the different beef cuts from the primals, which is pretty much repeated for the hog, and next to nothing for venison. I had to refer to the beef/lamb dissection. The pictures aren't clear enough to discern connective tissue, sinew, etc.I believe since the book is 'Basic Butchering of Livestock and Game' and not a 'cook book', perhaps more detail should have been given to the dissection of the primal cuts into recognizable meat counter type cuts and then it wouldn't have been so 'basic'. I didn't need help in field dressing etc but it came with the package and since it sounded like the rest would be more helpful and what I was actually needing, I went for it.I suppose I will use the book to a degree, but mostly it'll probably just go on the bookshelf. In my opinion, it sure isn't what it sounded like in the description or the reviews and I"m certainly glad it wasn't more costly.

While it does put the steps into words, it could be so much better. Many of the details in the butcher process are vaguely described leaving the reader to figure it out for themselves. Pictures are grainy black and white or line drawings. It's ok for an overview, but at the end of the day it just identifies what you don't know and what to look for in a better instructional book."Basic" is an understatement. I would not recommend to someone that actually what to butcher an animal.

The book makes a decent attempt at teaching meat processing: stunning, slaughtering, gutting, skinning, quartering and butchering. It uses a fair amount of diagrams to illustrate the process, but some stuff is inevitably left to paragraphs of un-illustrated instructions. I have the kindle version and many of the diagrams don't match exactly whats being discussed in the preceding paragraph. Ofcourse I think that its impossible to learn such a skill by reading a book alone ... I would recommend people to view some videos on youtube for learning the crude outline of how to do things, and then read this book as a reference to hone your method and learn expert tips etc. If you just rely on this book you'll likely be lost.

Was very timid about butchering rabbits for my dogs when I bought this book. But the guide is very clear. If you have dogs that you love, and you are determined to feed a species-appropriate diet, then you cannot get around feeding dogs--who are 98% wolves--a diet of mostly meat. But, store-bought meat is not only expensive--it may not even be safe for human consumption. I have pretty much gone vegetarian myself, but, I cannot expect that of my dogs (Belgian Malinois). So! This means raising and slaughtering my own meat animals. This guide is a help in that area.

I think the best way to really find out what works is to get out in the field and get your hands dirty. This book helps you do just that! I felt that the step by step directions are very accurate, but I will say that some things just cannot be explained to people with no experience in this field. The author is a veterinarian which I feel really impacts the way you will look at this book, and at killing for food in general. It really goes together. I love the emphasis the book puts into culling the animal with as little stress and pain as you can possibly inflict. It gives thorough and in-depth instructions on the proper methods and ways to kill the animal and prepare it. Killing animals for food is nasty business and should only be done (IMO) by people with respect of the animal and great thanks. The Native Americans are really onto something with that...The illustrations are hand-drawn, but I had no problem with that. I did not feel that it in any way detracted from the reliability of the instructions.Anyway, loved the book and highly recommend!

Outstanding --how to book--, highly recommend this for any survival bookshelf or actually for inclusion in your survival backpack just in case. Very well done via the basics; things people that don't hunt or have not lived or live on a working farm, simply won't know, but should know, just in case. Bottom line, again very well done for the subject matter covered,--- and of course only needed in emergencies but normally emergencies don't email you before they happen. Well worth the price, and again very well done book for the subject matter covered. Highly recommend it for one of those just in case lists of books or information a person might need if circumstances required it.

I've skinned and cleaned squirrels and rabbits before; I found this book very enlightening. The line drawings are detailed enough to be extremely useful, and the explanations are also detailed and full of needed information. I got it mostly to learn how to dress out deer - planning on hunting more, so I figured it might not hurt to know how to do that myself, save the expense of having someone else do it. Since I hunt for meat, not trophies, and try to use as much of the animal as possible, this book was really very useful.

There are a few vi textbooks but this one is the best for self learning. It's well organized and easy to follow. I recommend a page or two each day and practice the new information the rest of the day. Despite all the GUI stuff out there, vi always exists on every Unix-flavor machine. This is a must read for Unix admins.

Great info, but could be organized a little better for beginners.

This is the best Vi editor book. Having said that, I can no longer remcommend using vi, instead if you can switch to vim. Vim is the next generation of vi...There are loads of plugins etc. There is a Vim text, (not as good as this one but it has to cover more stuff) But if you can't get vim, and dread learning emacs. This is the vi book for you. It covers regular expressions as understood by vi, it has all the basic set commands, the buffer control etc. It was originally written for internal classes at HP, but since there wasn't any other good vi books they have allowed general publication. Thanks HP!
