Finalist in the About.com Reader's Choice Awards for Best Knitting Book of 2011."Budd's latest book is a trove of expertise, with patterns from 15 of the craftiest sockistas around, no surnames necessary...Every project adheres to the holy trinity of custom sock knitting--fit, comfort, aesthetics. And if you can't get enough of this collected wisdom in words alone, a 95-minute sock tutorial by Budd is included on an accompanying DVD." - Cheryl Krementz, Yarn Market News"Ann Budd is at it again. She's pulled together another great collection of patterns, this time from master sock designers. There are 17 sock designs, and there isn't one I wouldn't love to wear." - Cindy Koepke, Knitcircus"It seems like just about all the big names in knitting -- particularly sock knitting -- are featured in Ann Budd's excellent new book Sock Knitting Master Class...In addition to the fantastic patterns, which offer a wide variety of options for both toe-up and top-down knitters (and even one sock that goes both directions!), an introductory section covers just about all you'd ever need to know about some of the design choices that go into making a sock." - About.com Guide to Knitting"If the designers aren't enough to draw you in, there's much more in here for sock novices and sock aficionados alike. With topics like sock design, toe up and top down construction, and the best bind offs for toe-up socks, this book will take you from zero to sock in no time." - KnitPurl yarn shop (Portland, OR)"This book is a really valuable collection of patterns and techniques that any sock knitter will use again and again." - Jenny, KnitPicks.com"I'm really glad to have this book because it has so many patterns, from lace to cable to colorwork, and the socks are all beautiful. Also, the techniques have plenty of charts, diagrams and photographs to make learning easy." - Pamela MacKenzie, MyCentralJersey.com"The facts alone will make you want this book: 15 of the knitting world's best sock designers, 18 sock designs, Ann Budd talking basic how-tos and design tips and Clara Parkes talking sock yarn, and a 95 minute DVD. All of the technique and yarn information is so well organized and thought out that a knitter could read the book and not knit a single sock and still come away having learned a lot about sock knitting." - Knitty.com"...the patterns! Beautiful, yet functional stitch designs and fun colors." - CraftGossip.com Knitting Editor"It's not often that I scoop a book from the top of the review pile and take it home with me, and it's even less common for me to sit down and read it right away. But with sock knitting on my mind, I was intrigued, so last night I sat down to peruse this over a cup of tea. I was absolutely delighted to see that the first chapter of the book is devoted to explaining the whys and wherefores of sock construction. Top-down or toe-up? She's got it covered. Heel flap, short row or afterthought heel? Ditto. Want to choose from a pointed toe, a spiral or star toe, or a toe band? She's got your back with that, too. This book seems like just the right foundation for someone who's ready to strike out on their own - even if the starting place is just switching out the heel or toe treatment for one that suits them better." - Austen Gilliland, craft editor, CanadianLiving.com"You think you already know everything there is to know about socks? After all, there are a multitude of sock books on the market these days, perfectly good books. You know everything. Except...do you really? Most (though not all) sock books I own are either filled with patterns with not a whole lot of time spent on technique, or they're full of guidance but with blah patterns. Of course, some do hit the balance between pattern and technique. Some are fairly exhaustive, in fact, and you may already have them on your shelves. But...they're not THIS book. First, this boo

I got this sock book for the re-soleable sock by Anna Zilboorg. This is a toe-up style sock that is knitted flat after casting on a band and picking up toe stitches. You make a sort of flap for the instep, then go along the back, picking up slipped stitches on each side until you have a closed tube for the toe. How you pick up the stitches determines if you are increasing for the toe or instep gusset and then you continue on to make a short row heel. After that, it's a simple matter to start knitting in the round to complete the leg of the sock. To re-sole, you rip out any holey bits and pick up and knit flat on the sole, grafting onto a row of intact stitches. This is helpful for stranded knitting, as the strands remain on the leg and top part of the foot, while the sole is a solid single yarn.I've tried it, and it makes excellent "Turkish" style or Fairisle socks. It's not nearly as fast as knitting in the round, but it really does work. If you put a lot of work into stranded socks, or use a fancy yarn for the top of the foot, you can use a more durable yarn for the sole. The rest of the designers are familiar to knitters: Cookie A, Kathryn Alexander, Veronik Avery, Cat Bordhi, Nancy Bush, Evelyn A Clark, Chrissy Gardiner, Priscilla Gibson-Roberts, Anne Hanson, Eunny Jang, Melissa Morgan-Oakes, Deborah Newton, Clara Parkes, and Meg Swansen. Some of the techniques have appeared before in other publications (Swansen's fitted socks, Gibson-Roberts' Bulgarian style intarsia.) But even if you've seen these in print, the book comes with a DVD of demonstrations, and that is worth the book alone, because some of the techniques are a bit unfamiliar and there is nothing like seeing it in action to learn it.

This book is beautifully designed, has a pleasing variety of interesting-to-knit sock patterns by leading designers, and loads of valuable instructional material. However, because the how-to information is organized around specific sock projects, this is more of a pattern book than a reach-for-it reference on sock-knitting techniques. For example, although many heel styles are explained (round, short-row, band, Dutch, etc.), the actual instructions are not all grouped together in a single chapter on "heels"--instead, you may have to go to one of the patterns that uses a particular heel type to find the actual step-by-step instructions. The book includes ten top-down patterns, and seven toe-up patterns. Cast-on and bind-off techniques are illustrated with clear line drawings. Patterns are written out in standard sock pattern style (general information, leg, heel, foot, toe, finishing--or the reverse). Charts are included when appropriate (twisted-stitch and colorwork designs). There is a general chapter on designing, and there are notes and design tips scattered throughout.A "Design Techniques" box accompanies each pattern. The feature breaks down the sock construction by the techniques used, and provides a "road map" to the page locations for additional how-to instructions on the techniques. For example, Veronik Avery's "Happy Go Lucky Boot Socks" pattern uses these techniques: (1) top down construction, (2) designing with slip stitches, (3) working with five double-pointed needles, (4) any elastic cast-on, (5) round heel, (6) wedge toe, and (7) Kitchener stitch. All of the patterns are beautiful, as you would expect from these famous sock designers: Cookie A., Nancy Bush, Anne Hanson, Veronik Avery, Deborah Newton, Evelyn A. Clark, Meg Swansen, Ann Budd, Chrissy Gardiner, Kathryn Alexander, Priscilla Gibson-Roberts, Eunny Jang, Melissa Morgan-Oakes, Anna Zilboorg, and Cat Bordhi. The book also includes a 95-minute DVD. Ann Budd discusses the individual projects (displaying the actual knitted samples and describing the techniques each uses), and demonstrates the knitting techniques. If you learn best by watching someone else knit, you will really like this "bonus" DVD. Because of the DVD, the book can dispense with step-by-step still photographs of the more complicated techniques, and include many more close-ups of the knitted socks themselves. As a pattern book, I rate this at 5 stars; as a technical reference book, at 3.5 to 4 stars. My favorite Ann Budd sock knitting book is still Getting Started Knitting Socks, for new knitters. Two really excellent sock-knitting reference books are The Sock Knitter's Workshop: Everything Knitters Need to Knit Socks Beautifully, for somewhat experienced knitters; and Sensational Knitted Socks, for all knitters, regardless of experience. Two personal favorite sock-knitting books are Folk Socks, which has a lot of interesting patterns and good general instructions; and Lucy Neatby's Cool Socks Warm Feet, a very popular book by my favorite designer, who is probably the most technically accomplished knitter on the planet.

If you like to make socks, this book will teach you how to knit socks from the ground up with knitwear design. You will learn how to create your own socks as well as learn how to make good sock design from the signature elements and techiques of 16 top designers. In this book the patterns divided into two sections by top-down and toe-up construction, Sock Knitting Master Class explores such techniques as cables, twisted stitches, lace, stranded colorwork, entrelac, shadow knitting, and intarsia worked in the round. Plus, you'll discover inventive ways to start and end socks, shape heels and toes, and knit the soles. On a bonus enclosed DVD, Ann showcases all you need to know to knit fun, inventive socks, including a few special tips from this master sock knitter.

It took me 3 to 4 years to learn Magic Loop socks with the after- though heel. Now I have 24 pairs of socks & I am knitting on 5 more. YOu can never have enough socks!!! This book has all the techniques & it has a DVD. Wish she had written it years ago as she would have saved me a few years of TEARS and frustration. This is like THE BIBLE of sock knitting. I carry it with me whenever I need to cast on figure eight & to remind myself of picking up the stitches for the after thought heels. (I knit toe up past the increases of the toe & leave them on the 40 inch zero needle and then go on to another pair. I must have about 15 pars on needles beside the 4 in my knitting bag and the 24 pairs I wear. ) I am now getting into zigzag patterns & small cables. she explains very well, easy to follow. If you watch The Late Late show with Craig Furgeuson, you will see how he shows off his fancy socks. I think they might be store bought. But the ones last week were lovely with different strips every inch and a quarter. Letterman excuses his boring white socks. BUY this book & grab some hand painted sock yarn with 20% nylon ( nylon makes them wear well) and start today.

Teen love and real world drama collide in this fantastic YA coming of age story.Maya is a high school senior with a passion for film-making, trying to convince her over protective parents to let her go to New York University for film rather than go to college closer to home. She's also trying to manage her crush on the popular football star, who gets brought into her life through a school project. Their friendship grows into something more, and it seems everything is going to work out great for her. Then a terrorist attack in their state brings harsh scrutiny to Muslims across the US, and to Maya's family in particular due to their being the only Brown people in the small town, and an unfortunate coincidence that links them to the suspect. Maya struggles with her parents' fears for her safety and the aftermath of the event making things weird with her crush. She must also face a classmate with a grudge against all Muslims who becomes radicalized by the attack...On a slightly spoiler-y note, I like how the attack is handled. [Spoiler: the Muslim American initially believed to have conducted the attack was actually an innocent victim and a white supremacist was the terrorist responsible.] This is much more in line with actual terrorist incidents in the US, and reminded me of the Oklahoma City bombing which was initially blamed on Muslim terrorists before white supremacist Timothy McVeigh was identified. The classmate who attacks Maya because his older brother became an amputee in Iraq was also on point. The book reflects an American experience where Brown, Muslim, immigrant and other minority groups are always suspect even when white supremacy is the true culprit. The heavy issues aren't as central as the coming of age and love story, however, and it all comes out so beautifully. I will be on the lookout for anything else Samira Ahmed publishes.

I really enjoyed this book, it has a good story, easy to read and I liked the writing style. The characters were likeable and relatable, and the subject thought provoking. It felt like true story, something happening anywhere and everywhere in the world today. I also liked the way Maya sees the world as through a movie reel, capturing every memory as a film image.Read and review free copy.

Quick engaging read with a lot of heart. This book sucked me right in as I followed Maya's heartbreaking and inspiring struggle to claim her own identity as Muslim American. Full of pop culture references, beautiful descriptions and an authentic portrayal of an Indian American family, Ahmed captures the feelings that are universal about being a teenager while weaving a unique story.

I sort of wish this book had started at the last chapter and told that story going forward, weaving in the events of the rest of the book as backstory. It was good, but not quite as tight as it could have been.

I bought this to read for my book club. I found it a little too teen-romance; but it was a nice little read.

Such an excellent coming of age story. I loved every minute of it. Excellent voice—such a compelling story of American experience.

The romance was pretty cheesy but it had a great message and I enjoyed the read.

Ahmed’s book is such an incredible, devastating, heartwarming, hopeful story and I am so glad I read it. I highly recommend picking up LH&OF for a read that will sweep you through page-by-page and devour your heart.

As I move from an engineering role into more of a leadership role, this is the first book I've read on facilitation, and it has become a valuable resource in my tool box. As one reviewer said, some of the information provided could be considered obvious; and I would add "unless it's not obvious for somebody new to facilitation". Good book to have on your shelf if you're in a servant-leadership position, like a Scrum Master or an Agile Coach.

This book stands out as one of my favorites on how to really build collaborative teams, and to build consensus. It is full of real-world examples and specific techniques. This is a hard topic to tackle, and I believe that the authors write from experience. The techniques in this book are not just for "Agile" project managers. They can be applied to many different teams on how to facilitate and develop collaboration in meetings, better decisions through consensus, and generally gain team commitment.

good book

Clean book and prompt delivery

Full of actual and practical knowledge that fills in the gap between fluff and actually getting stuff done.

Good Book

This was fast, excellent service. Received the item a lot quicker than I expected and it was in perfect shape.

Tabaka's book is part of an ongoing series on the use of the Agile software development process. It deals with a key idea of involving participants to the fullest extent. The word collaboration is used to describe this idea. The book is directed at someone who has to manage this process. Someone in a supervisory capacity. Though of course the book could be usefully read by anyone else involved. The book has many suggestions. About such tasks as conducting status meetings during the project. Or how to distinguish between a good meeting and a bad meeting. Or supervising small group work. The advice is entirely about the human element. And not about any specific software tools or languages. If you are a supervisor from a programming background, it could be the human element aspects that you are most in need of advice about.Naturally, the text also has numerous instances of how to deal with what it calls Agile Practices. Yet you might not need to adhere to the latter to still derive gain from the book. There is no need to buy into some or indeed any of the Agile Practices. Much of the book has useful advice (like the example above of the good and bad meetings) that is germane to whatever overarching development process you already have in place. Er, you do have one in place, don't you?
