This book was heralded on one of my favorite podcasts as the best book about city politics and it did not disappoint. This book beautifully describes the well-oiled components of the Daley machine: the rank-and-file Democratic voters, the recipients of the patronage system, national political leaders, labor unions, the private sector, and most importantly, Boss Daley himself. It should be required reading for all Chicagoans.

I had owned the original publication years back & wanted to replace it. I was disappointed that photos were not included, as I recall were part of my original book..The print is smaller & crammed into fewer pages....The text is the same...readable, informative..Mike Royko was there & captured Daley as a person & a leader of the political machine

An honest and unflinching look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the man who was neither the first Boss nor the last Boss but quite possibly the biggest Boss - but more importantly, what it cost one man, one city and millions of people to take that man to the top and keep him there. Crediting Daley for his ballsiness but never excusing or sparing Daley judgment for his ability to be both casually and deliberately cruel, a short and intense look at American Machine politics at what could be called its most sophisticated - for to call it "at its best" would be giving that form of government more respect than it deserves. Great read.

Good read for anyone that grew up anywhere in Northern or Central Illinois in the late 60s - 70s. Chicago ran the state and Daley was the man.

Born and raised in the Chicago area, I bought and read the first paperback edition when it first came out and loved it. I recently re-purchased to refresh my recollection, and was NOT disappointed. I add my voice to those who know that every word Royko wrote was true. And I have to wonder: what, specifically, did the Honors Government student (below) think was fictionalized? I hope he/she isn't considering a career in government, or he/she is in for a rude awakening upon his/her first encounter with the real world of politics. "Fictionalized?" Pal, it's ALL true!

Just as relevant as when I first read it 40 years ago. It portrays both Mayor Daley and his city with a bit of artistic license, but the net result is pretty accurate.

Interesting/quick read on Mayor Daley and the workings of the Chicago political “machine” that supported his rein.

I would recommend this book if your into politics. This shows you how powerful a party can be when all the gears are well kept.

I have read many of David McCullough's books, only two more to go, but this one was the absolute best. He brought Truman to life for me. He made that whole era, WW! into the Korean War come alive. Every character, every scene, was like I knew exactly what he was talking about. His love of Bess and then his daughter...his protection of the privacy of his family....his loyalty...this was the best read for me and, believe me, I loved The Great Bridge and the story of the Panama Canal...Path Between the Seas....but Truman was so very special. If you have a love of history you will enjoy this book from beginning to end and don't let the length of it discourage you from starting it because it just flies by. When I finished it I felt that I had laid to rest my very best friend. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

David McCullough's Truman is a long book but well worth the read. It covers Truman's life from his ancestors on the frontier to his death and everything in between. McCullough ties the history of Truman's ancestors, childhood, family life, farm experience, business attempts, World War I military service, political life to explain what Truman did and why as President. It also delves into Truman's political campaigns on all levels, which I found truly fascinating. This really is an informative book that transformed my understanding of Harry Truman and the Truman presidency. McCullough's writing style is vivid and engaging, it really is hard to put down once you get started.I couldn't help drawing parallels between the present and the past while reading this book - particularly with the 2016 Presidential campaign and how Clinton and Trump campaigned compared to how Truman campaign and our current problems in Korea. I couldn't help contrasting the personalities of Truman and Trump, either.I highly recommend Truman; it's a fascinating, informative, well written biography of a President who was in office during a highly important, trans-formative period of United States History.

Probably everything's been said about this book that I want to say, but I have to say that I wonder how I went all these years without realizing what an engaging historian and writer Mr. McCullough is. Truman reads like a novel. As a youngster, I used to look at pictures of Truman, hear him speak, and wonder how such a seemingly drab little man could be our president. So if my husband hadn't already read and recommended the book, I probably wouldn't have even started it. But after racing through this biography -- by no means a hagiography -- I long for a candidate like Truman in the 2016 election. Moreover, it was a kind of nostalgia trip for me, since I was brought up by a father whose basic values paralleled Truman's, and many of his now old-fashioned speech mannerisms reminded me of the way people spoke when I was growing up. I'll certainly be moving on to the author's other books even if I don't think the topic would appeal to me.

On the positive, I think he did a magnificent job covering Harry Truman as far as giving the reader the broad experience of his life before, during, and after the presidency. For my money, you can’t get any better than the sections on the events leading up to the firing of Douglas Macarthur and his defeat of Thomas Dewey in 1948.I felt like while it was a well-written biography that kept me engaged through 1000 pages, I felt like it reinforced the popular image of Harry Truman as a plain spoken man of principles who knew how to make the tough decisions and made them. While there is certainly nothing wrong with it, it felt like anything that didn’t compete was glossed over like his association with the Pendergast Machine in Missouri or the depth of his feelings for FDR, I thought this could’ve added a little more depth because many people already understand the popular perception of Harry Truman.Well written, but largely reinforcing the “popular” image of Harry Truman.

The book "After the Ectasy, the Laundry" by Jack Kornfield, I found most enlightening, that, "I have not read everything, I had falsely told myself". The book is easy to read, and interpret, I believe, to consumers of all faiths, religions, including agnostics, andathesists. I highly recommend this book, to anyone, on a spiritual journey for wholeness, and to gain additional peace of mind, who may have a goal of becoming "Self-Actualized" in Abraham Maslow's Hierachy of Needs, or even the beginner, who is on a spiritual journey, (my choice of words) who, may have become dis-enchanted, attending seminars,"when the guru leaves town, all too often, the charisma, and, insight, fade away" (at least that has been my experience form 1983 until this very year, 2011). I give Jack Kornfield, a solid Grade A, as with his Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, again, is written, in very simple language, for even, the beginner, who seeks some answers, that life is a journey, not necessarily a destination.Everyone worldwide, can gain some very useful insight about "Enlightment does exist, and bring transformation, but, they don't last" from pagexiii of my version, of the Bantam trade paperback edition, published in October of 1991. This book is a real treasure. Having recently experienced a real mountaintop experience, I was so glad to have the wonderful wisdom and tender guidance of this book to help me through the returning to the world. This is not just a book of opinions by a smart guy. It is a compendium of wisdom and varied perspectives on some very important aspects of living a spirit-led life. The author has effectively drawn on the experiences of a diverse set of individuals with long experience in both their own lives and in the guidance of those of us who are just beginning. This book helped me to understand my experience and to place it in a realistic perspective and that allowed me to retain the treasure of my experience without the sense of loss that is usually attendant to the conclusion of an interval like this. I highly recommend this book. It is one I turn to weekly to reread some of the incredible wisdom and insight conveyed in a brilliant organization. This jewel get my highest recommendation.
