Learning From the Tanya: Volume Two in the Definitive Commentary on the Moral and Mystical Teachings of a Classic Work of Kabbalah

From the Inside Flap

Learning from the Tanya offers a key for unlocking the mysteries of one of the most extraordinary books of moral teachings ever written. A seminal document in the study of Kabbalah, the Tanya explores and solves the dilemmas of the human soul by arriving at the root causes of its struggles. Though it is a classic Jewish spiritual text, the Tanya and its commentary take a broad and comprehensive approach that is neither specific to Judaism nor tied to a particular personality type or time or point of view. The internationally celebrated Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, who has dedicated his life to the study, teaching, and writing of books that explain Jewish scripture, religious practice, spirituality, and mysticism to Jews and non-Jews throughout the world, is the author of this explanation and line-by-line commentary on the Tanya. As relevant today as it was two hundred years ago, the Tanya helps us to understand the many thousands of complexities, doubts, and drives within us as a single basic problem—the struggle between our Godly soul and our animal soul. The first book in the series, Opening the Tanya, explored the first section of original text of the Tanya. This second volume, Learning from the Tanya, goes on to the next major portion and offers the definitive explanation and commentary that guides the reader toward harmony of body and soul, of earthliness and transcendence. Learning from the Tanya is an extraordinary book that helps us to learn how we can elevate our soul to a higher level of awareness and understanding, until our objectives and aspirations are synonymous with our Godly potential.

From the Back Cover

Because [the Tanya] is a 'written Torah' it requires, in every generation, an 'oral Torah' to accompany it and to serve as an usher and guide. This is especially true in our generation, in which so many people grew up without any contact with the Hasidic world and are unable to access this book.It is for this generation, and for these people, that this commentary to the Tanya is written. The book contains the precise text of the Tanya as it was written by the Alter Rebbe, along with its authorized translation, and a full commentary that provides source references. I have added extensive explanations of basic Hasidic concepts, theoretical background, metaphors and parables from daily life, and stories from the past and present lives of the Hasidim. The book also contains an expanded Glossary defining and expounding on various important terms and concepts. This book is intended for all of those who have the mind and the will for it, who desire to access this world and grow through it."

Book 2 of this remarkable three book series. Almost impossible to find and long out of print I was lucky to catch this at a reasonable price. Steinsaltz is auguably the greatest living Torah scholar and Hasidic commentator, surely to be mentioned in the same breaths as the Chofetz Chaim, Vilna Goan and Rabbi Kook.

Written by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812), the founder of Chabad the Tanya is a difficult read without the comments from Rabbi Stensaltz or a teacher it would be close to impossible. That being said the Tanya is an amazing book on the deeper meanings of being Jewish. Tanya is the central text of Chabad Chassidism. Its stated aim is to show a path to realizing one's purpose and developing a deeper relationship with G-d.

Remarkable teachings. Not for the casual reader, or the timid. It's been made accessible for a patient person with a good teacher. Tanya has highly complex thoughts and sentence structure, but well worth the journey down the Rabbit Hole. And it beats finding a guru in the Himalayas, this is the real stuff of self-discovery and spirituality. Start with Volume One.

Learning From The Tanya by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is the second volume in the "Definitive Commentary on the Moral and Mystical Teaching" series focusing on the Kabbalah. The first volume of the series, "Opening the Tanya" discussed the first section of the original text of Hasidic Master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi's "Tanya". This second volume takes on the next major portion of the Tanya, offering the definitive explanation and commentary providing the reader with a guide toward harmony of body and soul, of earthliness and transcendence, and a higher level or awareness and understanding with our human potential with respect to a relationship with God. A scholar, teacher, scientist, author, mystic, and social critic, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is a world recognized expert on this subject, and Learning From The Tanya is confidently recommended reading for students of Judaic mysticism and the Kabbalah in general, and the Tanya in particular.

amazon.com: please change the excerpt from the book. as a big fan of the tanya, i must say this is an excellent book. rabbi steinsaltz' commentary is very helpful and even inspiring. helping to give more light to the great teachings of the alter-rebbe.the excerpt here is too "legal sounding". for example, look at the comments on chpt. 26...or almost any other chapter. the book is written well and commmunicates well the spirit of the tanya for newcomers or those familiar with the text.please get a new excerpt!! amazon, are you listening???

At times an inspired explanation and exploration of the first Chabad Rebbe's book of Tanya. Rabbi Steinsaltz uses more words to say what the Rebbe says in just a few, but for most of us this is necessary to understand in depth and apply to ourselves what the Tanya is really saying. Many paragraphs in this book sound like they were written from an inspired state.

#1,910,110 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was a little hesitant to buy this book because it was printed way back but let me know tell you I am glad I got it. The multithreading programming issues and concern are exactly the same as when it was invented so why would the age of this book matter? This book uses C++ but not STL. I like this because it shows you how to write your classes rather than just use them. It illustrates this with the class library it provides with which itself is a great resource. This book teaches you how you live in multithreading world, how you design multithreaded applications.

This area of MS OS programming has become antiquated over the years with the arrival of MS Messaging and recently by WCF designs. This makes it hard to find a good reference for upgrading legacy code or connecting an older service to a C# Interop stack. I would like to say that this reference is as good as anything written lately and covers the material thoroughly. It covers the usual parts of thread creation and usage. It also covers synchronization, exceptions and thread pooling. Structured exception handling is also covered and a range of well designed code snippits are also included. As a bonus, a threading library Md, the author's design, is covered. This library is included on the included CD( shipping and handling may have cracked this item ).I was in need of a quick reference for a customer and this book completely filled the bill so I'm giving it five stars. Material this old( 16 years ) is not available on bookshelves or the internet any longer.

Here's what I liked about the book:(1) It provides simple explanation of central concepts and issues around multithreaded programming. This knowledge is platform independent.(2) Provides clear explanation of Win32 specific API and Kernel Objects, knowledge that is necessary to do Multithreaded Programming on most Microsoft Platforms.(3) Builds a simple C++ based OO Wrapper class Library for Multithreaded programming that elegantly conceals Win32 APIs idiosyncrasies.(4) Also builds additional higher Level OO Abstractions (like Monitors) that Win32 does not need to support directly but Programmers need often.(5) Great illustrations of Multithreading problems, solutions and Patterns through the trailing part of the book.(6) Code and Diagrams abound. What's there not to like?

This is the first O'Reilly book I've ever read that I cannot wholeheartedly recommend. The introduction to the book states the it is aimed at the novice. However, the examples in the book contain several novice mistakes. The book also glosses over a few point that an experienced MT programmer would understand, but would be baffling to a novice. I also found a few Win32 mistakes such as their handling of redirection of standard in, out, and error. If you know MT and Win32, it's probably a good book. If you don't keep looking.

I do not deny that the style of writing can be terse at some points. However this book covers a lot of ground on how to write a good , thread safe codes. The class included has provided a lot of usable codes that can be used in complex sowftware projects.

If you are new to threads , i think u will never find a good book like this one.its so simple to follow the instructions and examples described in the book. YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK, otherwise your application will kaboom ...

This is a great book! It covers kernel objects in detail (mutexes, semaphores, etc.), with simple example code. It also covers methods of interthread communication (memory mapped files, anonymous pipes, etc.). It does not, however, cover the different Win32 threading models (single, apartment, etc.) at all. This is a good book for understanding the basics of Win32 multithreading concepts.

Excellent book on multithreading. I like the way the thread library was built into the learning process. Maybe it was not appropriate but I would have liked to see something on RPC threads also. Another O'Reilly kudo.

Rakove delivers a full review of the constitutional convention providing information about the convention, discussions, debates, political thought during that period, and compromises leading to the final document. He first delves into the issues regarding the arguments between the large states vs. small states, and debates regarding slavery, with compromises without ever using the word slavery in the Constitution. He reviews in detail the ratification process, state positions, and covers the concerns of the anti-federalists. The absence of a Bill of Rights is covered, and how it came to be enacted by the first Congress. This is an excellent work and is the best work I have read regarding the initiation of the U.S. Constitution. James Madison comes across as a great leader and driving force for making the constitutional convention happen, convincing George Washington to attend, and a leading debater.

...it's the best thing I've read on the mind and political context of the Founders at the various founding moments...the deliberation and intention of the 1787 Framers, the deliberations and intentions of the state ratification conventions c. 1787-1789, and the early debates over the institutionalization of the constitutional clauses and where the sources of political danger lurked. Jack Rakove is another of Bernard Bailyn's crowded stable of brilliant students who with Bailyn have moved on to reshape the study of pre-revolutionary, revolutionary, and Federalist America. Original Meanings (and the plural "s" is significant) is a seminal contribution to a discussion that should dominate the next presidential election. Rakove's critics will argue that he's hostile to the anti-Federalists and to today's Originalists (led by their Heralds, Scalia and Thomas), but Rakove convinces me - and I suppose it's needless to say, I take a side in this particular debate but more or less pride myself in my ability to preserve analytic objectivity and to weigh an argument and its logic - that all the controversies of Originalism and the "Framer's intent" are vastly more political than historical (although, as Rakove points out more than once, clarity on the historical questions is essential to inform any conversation on the controversial constitutional topics). For me - and please pardon the editorial digression - Originalism seems a variation of the Reformation battlecry, "Sola Scriptora!" (It's more than a little ironic that skepticism of scripture is associated more closely with Roman Catholic, rather than Protestant, tradition, but the Supreme Court's conservative caucus is uniformly devout RCC.) In government, this is a recipe - as several of the Founders and their philosophic forebears pointed out - for the dead hand of the past continuing to grip throats in the present. Jefferson opined, often, in writing (and presumably in conversation) that each generation of Americans needed to rewrite the Constitution to suit their own times. (But he was, of course, in France, corresponding with Jamie Madison, whose story dominates these pages, while the constitution was being drafted and crawling through state-by-state ratification.) Well, we've had our constitution, warts and all, for more than 225 years, and we see what 225 years of interpreting a pre-steam-engine, slaveholder-endorsed, wild-frontier-considerate document has done to warp our body politic...and the warpage continues as the political winds blow through the Supreme Court, giving some folks the decisions they long for and others the rage that animates political rivalries bent upon overturning malign majorities on the Court. Needless to say, the constitution has been amended a mere 17 times (and, I'll bet, never again) since the first Bill-of-Rights block of amendments, which were the Federalists' promise to the state ratifying conventions that, "Okay, okay, you can have a Bill of Rights" as the price of ratification, but we're unlikely ever again to see anything that approximates the 1787 meeting to "propose amendments" to the Articles of Confederation. That's the rut we're in.That story - the tale of how our great founding document tugged and pulled into place, every issue, every bloody round of politics, every ratification struggle, with of course the Federalist Papers and the great Anti-Federalist spokesmen at center stage - is told in close, exhaustively researched detail by author Rakove, who has ended not a single argument (as in all humility he scarcely expected to) but has written a starting point for understanding the welter of issues that occupied political Americans from the mid-1780s and the palpable failures of the Articles of Confederation until the opening of Federal government business, when the provisions of the Constitution began to be realized in operational government form.So I remain in the tank for the Bailyn School of Colonial-Revolutionary historiography, and I adore this book, and particularly for its continued - I'd say eternal - relevance to a nuanced understanding of American political life. Do tackle Original Meanings. It's a dense, closely argued work, and not for beginners, but it's an essential book for our - and any - time.

Rakove's immensely detailed diorama of the climate of ideas and issues during the creation of the Constitution is necessary reading for scholars and those with an interest in American history alike. But, as other reviews have stated, the book ain't no costume romp; rather, it is a collection of the most specific ideas that were affecting the political life of the nation/colonies, written in a tone that manages to be both passionate and dry. Rakove himself is clearly a brilliant man, and the book's complexity is fascinating when it is not simply overwhelming. Those familiar with the Constitution will find so very much to enjoy; each aspect and amendment of the Constitution is dissected, with due time given to its inception, how it was debated, how the leaders and working man alike felt about it, and about all the ramifications of its being included and what would be taken from the American people if excluded. This goes on for a few hundred pages, and can be an overtly challenging read if you don't take your time with it. Those who devote themselves to it, who pause and reflect and digest Rakove's words, will look at American government and place in the world in new and inspiring ways. A must for the patient historian.

With 22 reviews ahead of me I would normally decline to those who have said it all already, and said it very well. But when you crawl through a tome like this, a few words of recognition of the feat are liberating.I am an interested "student" of the constitution, or rather the men and process of the constitutional convention. I use quotation marks around student as one who is no longer in school, but has read a good number of books on the subject. Professor Rakove is clearly an expert and a brilliant scholar. The fact, anecdote and nuance in this book are the equivalent of three by most any other author. For that I would give it five stars. It is also a very difficult, labored read as almost every other reviewer has already said. For that, you just have to subtract one of those stars!By all means buy it and read it if the topic is of interest, but do not come to this book uninformed. This is NOT a book that should be your first on the topic. As others have said, this book was probably written for serious historians and legal minds (professional or amateur). There is allusion and nuance that take knowledge to understand and connect. With the humble admission that some of this book went over my head - I still have to admire its momentousness.And--Lord, Lord, where was Professor Rakove's editor in all of this? Or, maybe she or he would chime in at this point with, "You should have seen his manuscript BEFORE I got my hands on it!" For a far more "readable" treatment look at Professor Akhil Reed Amar's book America's Constitution: A Biography.
