I primarily work by hand using the needle turn technique, although I often use machine appliquÃ© methods to save time. I find both these appliquÃ© methods have their place in my stitching arsenal.One of the biggest trends in quilting these days is the new â€œModernâ€ quilt movement. These types of quilts are very graphic. They often use large shapes and require minimal piecing and are very often created using solid, richly saturated colors that will work in any home decor. As an appliquÃ©ist I have been searching for a way to incorporate my love of appliquÃ© with this modern style of quilt making and this book, â€œAppliquÃ© for Modern Beginnersâ€ provides an excellent tool to do just that.The authors have combined their quilting skills to design quilts that use minimal piecing, large scale appliquÃ© shapes and bold colors. The results are 10 projects that provide a very dynamic statement. These quilts can be completed quickly using the step-by-step instructions for Turned-edge appliquÃ© and Raw-edge Fusible AppliquÃ©. Both are machine appliquÃ© techniques, but you can certainly use your favorite hand stitched appliquÃ© method to complete these projects.The quilts in the book are constructed using large sections or blocks. This makes the appliquÃ© process easier as you will not find yourself struggling to fit an entire quilt under the arm of your sewing machine. These smaller sections also make is easier for you to take your quilt on the go if you are using hand appliquÃ©.The book begins with a very detailed explanation of the two appliquÃ© methods used to complete the projects. Each step is illustrated with a detailed photograph and each step is concisely written. Instructions on finishing your quilt include how to add binding, creating and attaching a hanging sleeve and adding a label to your quilt. As you work through your project you will find any important notes highlighted in a box. These notes provide a lot of helpful information so do watch for them. I was also struck by the beautiful quilting that was done on all the quilts. It was a nice bonus to find that at the end of each project a â€œquilting diagramâ€ was provided which illustrated the quilting. In some cases it was just straight line quilting and other projects provided the quilter with lots of inspiration to combine different quilting patterns into one project. All the patterns used in the book will need to be enlarged 200%. Beginners and advanced stitchers looking to bring a modern fresh look to their work will enjoy working on the quilts in this book.
