Don't et me wrong, this is a good book, and if you have time I would recommend reading it. It's just not one of the best and not as good as the first two books from Harry Beckwith.The format is great: compact, easy to read, perfect to bring on a 2-3 hour flight. The book is a collection of ideas and stories, which makes it also a good book for people who prefer to read a few pages per day. The stories are not very connected on a single theme:the book is about much more than "What clients love" .Some of the ideas in the book are old, some are OK, some I don't agree with, and a few were really good. This is one of those books that can give you one really good idea that makes reading the book 10x worth it. Yet I didn't get any - you might. Good luck

Upon completing my first read of this "simple" book, I found myself not only reviewing the numerous dog-eared pages & notes I took (Notes? Who takes notes in books anymore?), I also found myself turning all the way back to Page 1 to start reading it all over again. I'm sure there are a few nuggets of wisdom that I've missed.There are very few business books worth a second read. This is one of them. If you're an executive at any level in any kind of business (service or otherwise) this book could be extremely helpful both in your current business and in future opportunities. Even job seekers and entrepreneurs would benefit from this book.I'm buying copies of this book for a few of my friends. It's that good. Thank you, Mr. B!

Fast deliver and good product

Ogilvy, Bernbach, Gossage, Burnett, Trout & Ries, Roy Williams... and Beckwith. These guys all know their stuff. Solid, common sense, and usable information. Be sure you get Selling the Invisible first.

I use it in my marketing classes as a supplemental text to the more ponderous classic textbooks. It is an excellent, inexpensive, easy-to-read reference book. It is, essentially, an up-to-date rehash of Harry Beckworth's classic "Selling the Invisible," which is getting harder to find.

Frankly, most of this book focuses on 2 things:1. Rehashing a lot of "Selling the Invisible" (which I'd strongly recommend over this one); and2. A strong argument for building a brand (which, coincidentally, Mr. Beckwith's firm can do for you - who knew?)If you've read "Selling the Invisible," there are about half a dozen or so nuggets of wisdom in this book; you need to make the decision if that's worth your money or not.

I loved Harry's first book, and this one is even better. While I don't agree with all the advice, he certainly nails the decision points and helps you make any marketing or sales more effective.

About the Author

Gilbert Elton Claflin (1822-79) was born in Sandisfield, Massachusetts. Esther Patience Colby Claflin (1830-1900) was born in LeRoy, Ohio, and grew up in western New York State. In 1844, each moved to Wisconsin, where their families had bought adjacent forty-acre farms. Gilbert and Esther married in Oconomowoc in 1845. Judy Cook tours universities and historical societies in the United States and United Kingdom, performing multimedia presentations based on the Claflin letters and songs of the Civil War era. Her CDs include If You Sing Songs, Far from the Lowlands, Tenting Tonight: Songs of the Civil War, and Lincoln's America.

I really enjoyed the letters between this family from my hometown. The family's dynamics in surviving without their father, their interactions with their neighbors, and the efforts put forth to assure their winter needs are met. It held my interest.

This was an excellent book.

I am an avid reader of anything that Ashby Monk writes, so I was familiar with most of the ideas presented in this book, as he has discussed them in his previous scholarly articles or in publications such as Institutional Investor. However, I am very please to find them all gathered in one place with a lot of good descriptions of efforts to create investment vehicles that have better alignment of interest for pension funds and other institutional investors. For anyone involved with or interested in improving how institutional investors can increase their return on investment while at the same time providing the long term, lower cost financing needed to support infrastructure and SMEs, this is an important publication.

I was given this book as a gift by a large family office who wanted to explore new approaches to "institutional investing" and how could investors like family offices quickly adapt to capitalize on these new forces. Ashby Monk's new book is very well researched, thoughtfully written, and prescriptive without being directive.The book opened my eyes to many of the structural changes underway today - but maybe I was too close to recognixe their full effect. First of all, let me state that the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because it contains several chapters which will be superfluous to you if you've already been brewing for awhile and are buying this book to expand your repertoire (like me). I'm assuming most folks looking to get into brewing lagers and triple decoction mashes will already be well-versed in the basics; so to me, the introductory material in Part 1 (pp. 1-110) was unneeded. However, the overwhelming majority of Part 2 (The Brewing Process, pp. 113-253) was absolutely chock-full of either new information, or it at least provided the logical (and historical) framework behind every little decision-point in the brewing process, with a particular focus on brewing lagers. Perhaps the most valuable information is the author's simple, yet orderly and explicit regimen for conducting a triple decoction mash. His presentation was elegant and tremendously helpful in demystifying the PROCESS, while preserving the mystique of the RESULTS of decoctions. Now I can't wait to try a decoction, to see if I can taste the difference (and to finally earn some bona fides with respect to decoction mashing). For that reason alone, the book is well-worth your time and money. You should see my copy - Part 2 is absolutely bristling with protruding Post-it(R) notes, and virtually every page in Part 2 has multiple highlighted passages for me to re-read (and re-re-read) as I commit the information to my memory and rote brewing practices. Definitely one of the best books in my growing library of brewing compendia...

A very good overview of the essentials regarding Lager brewing. I'm keeping this book at arms reach when planning a beer. It teaches the reader, in a nutshell she'll, how to get it right taking out allot of guess work for beginners and intermediate. It is NOT exhaustive however, and there is the need for further research for the individual components, i.e., Grains/malt, water, yeast, hops, adjuncts, techniques, equipment, building recipes, size of operation, etc. And there are several good books on each of these subjects. This book is a must for any brewing library and helps lay a healthy foundation for success in brewing goals and oporations.

Lagers are a difficult style: the most authentic producers don't bother importing to the US. The Americans that emulate the Pilsners Marzens and Helles won't ever hone in on those beautiful malty flavors.Lagers are hard to do because maltiness is hard to capture. Once you have one though, preferably for longer than a 3 day binge in Germany, you start to realize what you're missing.I don't think this resource can give you everything you need, but its certainly a start in the right direction. As a brewer, you won't be able to go completely down this road without the help of someONE- not a text, because the best trade techniques are not written but passed down.

More scientific explanations of the brewing process, and a good book for any brewer to own. Many books give too cursory of an brewing explanation, and while this may be a bit too detailed -- it is a great companion to Gordon Strong's Brewing Better Beer.

I have many books dealing with the subject of brewing and I find this to be right at the top of the list. The late Mr. Noonan presents a book not only relevant to brewing lager beers, but a wealth of brewing knowledge that carries over to all aspects of brewing.The art of making beer as a whole is represented. There are 40 pages on water alone. While a new brewer would find this book to be a lot to take in, anyone who has been brewing for a little time will gain much from this book. Mashing, lagering, water adjustment - it is all here and backed up with concrete science. Greg used the word 'Comprehensive' in the title and he delivered.

has alot of info, not just lager beer but water and stuff. little much if your starting out, maybe a little much if your experienced. you can brew great beer without this but its a nice addition

If you've read Papazian and Palmer already, this may be the next logical choice. Far more technically oriented than the other two, Noonan lays out the plan for decoction mashing after going in-depth with malt, water chemistry and treatment, yeast and fermentation. While the chapter with step-by-step instructions for decoction mashing is the clearest and most direct I've read, the book as a whole is a fantastic reference for brewing techniques in general and lager techniques in particular. A staple of any good brewing library.
