Review

"Bourbon Curious: A Simple Tasting Guide for the Savvy Drinker, serves as a primer on how to determine which brand of bourbon is right for you. (Minnick separates bourbon into four primary flavor groups: grain, nutmeg, caramel, and cinnamon.) Pulling from his extensive experience and credentials -- he serves as a judge on the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the World Whiskies Awards and has been deemed the "Bourbon Authority" for the Kentucky Derby Museum -- Minnick has created a tasting road map that is accessible and easily navigable. His talk tonight is appropriately paired with a guided bourbon tasting." -- Village Voice"What I like most about the book is how he lays out his bourbon tasting into four groups: Grain-Forward, Nutmeg-Forward, Caramel-Forward and Cinnamon-Forward bourbons." -- Bourbonr.com "Follow this field guide from Fred Minnick." -- Men's Health

I purchased this book for my boyfriend who has become quite the bourbon drinker over the past two years. He started trying a few brands and has now become quite the sampler. I thought that he needed something that would explain the notes he was tasting and somewhere to jot down some of his likes and dislikes so that he can progress in his knowledge of all things bourbon. He seems to be impressed with this book and the information it contains! He read the book on our overseas flight recently and was very excited to talk about the contents! Recommend this for anyone interested in learning about or furthering their bourbon knowledge!

If you are curious about bourbon this is a great book to get you going. It starts off with a history of the drink as well as a definition of what bourbon is."All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon."The history section is very interesting, but cursory enough that I will probably check out Bourbon Empire at some point. The next section talks about how bourbon is made and what influences the flavor, exploring the distilling processes, what secondary ingredients, after corn, are used (rye or wheat), the quality of the ingredients, the yeast, the wood in the barrels, and how long it is aged."Bourbon is all about the barrel."The third section explores how to taste a bourbon. It makes a great reference as it groups bourbons into different categories based on the prominent flavor of the drink (grain-forward, nutmeg-forward etc). Each section also covers various bourbons and provides information such as the distillery, mashbill, proof, distillation and filtering techniques, age, and barrels per bottling (for blends).

Twenty-some years, more or less, have passed since the publication of Waymark & Harris' "The Book of Classic American Whiskey" and the Regans' "Book of Bourbon". The printed and onlline chatter about America's native spirit has proliferated during that time (our own "Ellenjaye.com" among them). This book by Fred Minnick has finally taken the place of "definitive work on American Bourbon". If your collection consists of only one book about bourbon, this is the book it should contain.

I first purchased this via Audible. I enjoyed it so much that I bought this copy, and realized that I'd missed a lot through the audio version because this isn't just a simple history. This has charts, sidenotes, images and photos, an extensive index, very detailed tasting notes, etc. I would call this a textbook, not meant for simple reading. Mine is now dog-eared and bookmarked. Highly recommended.

Fantastic, well-paced book for anyone curious about the bourbon industry, the liquid, the brands, and some honest American History. The first part gives you the uncensored story of how bourbon became America's native spirit. The second part teaches you about everything that goes into making bourbon (which is both more and less than you'd think). The last part educates you on how to taste bourbon, along with an index of the author's own tasting opinion for many bourbon brands. You could use this section as your own at-home tasting guide. It's well-written, easy to follow and a pretty fun read that'll make you thirsty for a three-finger pour.

Fred Minnick's Bourbon Curious is a wonderful collection of bourbon history, facts, and legend. It's a quick read, and perfect for somebody new to the bourbon world that wants a little background, or a great way to find a page, point to the fact, and dispel a myth with somebody who *knows* that bourbon has to be made in Kentucky in order to be bourbon. I especially liked Minnick's tasting notes at the back of the book, and I have looked at them several times when tasting the bourbons on my shelves to see if my tastes are in the same ballpark as those of a trusted bourbon expert.

If you're into bourbon or want to learn more, than Fred's book is mandatory reading!I'm a bartender and keep this on the back bar to educate people when they start talking BS and claim that this 'Has to be this way' or 'the reason this is called this is because my uncle is from Kentucky and he told me'I've recommended it to so many patrons at the bar I probably should be getting some sort of kick back...haha

This book was referred to me by a Facebook Bourbon group I belong. So well laid out, well explained. For the novice and expert alike. I bought a couple and give to other Bourbon Geek friends.
