Dinosaur Kisses, by David Ezra Stein

From School Library Journal

PreS-K–Dinah, a baby dinosaur, is just out of her egg and ready to explore her green, swampy home. She learns to walk (stomp!) and to eat (chomp!), but the next thing Dinah sees (a kiss) she has to learn more about. She stomps all over looking for a special someone to kiss, making unsuccessful and funny attempts along the way. A fishlike creature gets a “whomp!” a dinosaur gets a “chomp!” and a reptilian critter gets a “stomp!” Realizing that she must pucker up politely to get her elusive kiss, Dinah finds her next would-be smooch, but she accidentally eats him. Finally, she befriends another baby dinosaur, and the two noisy buddies chomp, stomp, and whomp kisses to their hearts' content. Kids will love the cheeky but thoughtful expressions on Dinah's face, and the bottom-bitten dinosaur is sure to bring gleeful chuckles. Rendered in pen-and-ink, charcoal, watercolor, and crayon, the illustrations are bold, simple, and humorous. Dinah's big, goofy smile is sure to be reflected in the faces of her young admirers.–Alison Donnelly, Collinsville Memorial Public Library, ILα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

Brutish baby dinosaur Dinah knows how to chomp, stomp, and whomp, but she’s having trouble learning how to give a kiss. Her attempts wreak havoc on the world around her, inadvertently flattening an unsuspecting fish, munching a brontosaurus tail, and gobbling a lizard. That is, until her dino sibling hatches, and she has someone her own size and temperament with whom to trade kisses (which turn out to be more like head-butts). Stein (Interrupting Chicken, 2012) makes great use of fun onomatopoeia to punctuate a prehistoric tale modern parents know all too well—children making earnest efforts to learn a new skill only to achieve hilariously disastrous results. Despite its cuddly name, Dinosaur Kisses may be too boisterous for a bedtime book, and impressionable toddlers may take the biting story line a little too literally. But it is likely to be another rowdy story- and circle-time win for Stein, who’s proving to be a master at anthropomorphizing critters with perfectly overemphatic kid-like mannerisms. My two (now three) year old loves this book. I love how simply and easily it makes the social errors associated with being a toddler (biting, hitting and so on) and un-guilts them. They are portrayed as being part of the learning process instead of "bad", letting the reader learn in a funny way about why it's not okay to do them, but is also a natural part of the process of learning social skills and having accidents. Very cute. I love Stein's style. He lets so much go unsaid to let the story and pictures tell themselves. I like that it treats my child like an intelligent person capable of picking up on subtleties instead of having to spell everything out. Pouch is another fun one, but was not as loved as this great little book.

I am eager to try this book out with the target audience. I enjoyed it and I think children will too. This is a different sort of look at kisses and I have to admit the end surprised me, it was not at all what I was expecting, but it definitely made me laugh. The antics of the young dinosaur reminded me greatly of a young child with her enthusiasm and determination. The baby t-rex starts off stomping and chomping, but then she sees a kiss and decides that is what she wants to do, but her efforts fail in funny ways, until she finds the right creature to kiss, although not in the way I expected. I love this kind of book because they are so fun to share. The reader thinks he/she knows where the story is going only to be delightfully surprised. Highly recommended.

I recently saw this at the National Book Festival in DC, and got one. Now, I am ordering a second. This Dino-book has fun for baby and for parent in its surprising plot. (Yes, baby board books sometimes do have a plot.)Fun pictures, some shiny foil on the cover, and delightfully droll text makes this a must on the baby shower gift list.

This has got to be one of the cutest, funniest books ever for children. In a sea of books, I hope this one becomes a long time classic!

I love reading this book to my 18-month-old and my 4-year-old. Dinah is cute, her predicament is adorable, and now my 18-month-old responds to "Whomp?" by gently headbutting me. (Usually gently.)

My daughter loves this book. This was one of the very first books she would request. I feel that it helped her understand that its okay to express your feelings, even if the execution is a little off.

I’m using this adorable book instead of a card for a baby shower gift and quite frankly I love it!

I bought it based on recommendations. Ehh, not that good. To each their own!
