Williams chronicles his life in hip hop culture and his eventual break from that culture as he moves away from negative values (empty materialism, denigration of women) into a life of self examination. Although this is not an introduction to Heidegger or Hegel, you will walk away understanding the ideas they propound. The book is filled with extraordinary insight about the values hip hop culture promotes, what it is like to grow up middle class and black in America and how pernicious the hip hop values are for most young, black people. Williams is very insightful and is most compelling when he reflects on his life. As a Black woman I see this as only one of the causes. The hip hop culture through music,movies, TV and materialism is fed non-stop to our children and it is seductive. Nothing else seems to grant many youngsters the feeling of solidarity and the swagger and the elusive cool. To turn away from this is considered being disloyal and acting white. It is better to remain with the group than to seek many other avenues of success through education. Losing My Cool deserves four stars for creating a three dimensional picture of the hip hop world; and four stars for the very inspiring description of his awakening through his father's intellectual assistance and determination. Thomas Chatterton Williams holds a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Georgetown University and a Master’s degree from the Cultural Reporting and Criticism program at New York University. In 2007, he wrote an op-ed piece entitled “Yes, Blame Hip-Hop” for the Washington Post which generated a record-breaking number of comments. He writes for the literary magazine n+1 and currently lives in Brooklyn.

In this deeply personal and courageous book, Thomas Chatterton Williams seems to me to circle around one question:What is the good life, and how does one live it?Posed like that, however, the question is incomplete. It might be better posed like this:What is the good life (for a black person), and how does one live it?And, importantly, is it different than for people from different racial backgrounds?I don't think Williams offers a definitive answer to the first question—perhaps because there isn’t one.I think I’m reading him accurately if I say that—for him, as a black man—the approach to the good life is through careful examination of one’s self, one’s circumstances, and one’s attitudes towards the two.In short, through philosophy.In response to the second question, I read him as saying that philosophy can be as valuable for black people as it can be for anyone else.I am white. Philosophy as Chatterton presents it (and Socrates would have recognized it) has been a cornerstone of my life—when I’ve practiced it, I’ve done well; when I haven’t, I have not.I’m honored to share the life of the mind with someone who has worked as hard for it as Williams has, and am grateful to him for sharing the story of how he came to value it. I highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling to understand which intellectual projects are provincial and which may be universal.

I can't explain how articulate and expressive this book is. After reading "Great Negros", "Brainwashed', and "High Price: A Neuroscientist Journey...", I didn't think I would find anything close. It amazes me the insight and correlating path of choices we face in this society. A definite must read for all but especially for young black men or those raising/teaching young black men. As a teacher, I see those decisions constantly and have wondered how to stop the vicious cycle of respect at all cost, hip hop Biblism, and our lack of future. It is definitely a must read to forge your own path regardless of the lack of perceived "power" in society and the cost of neglecting to step out of the BET box.

Chatterton is earnest, erudite, and fully prepared to undermine a lot of your preconceptions about youth culture in America. Williams is no Uncle Tom, but he makes a gentle and clear case that the challenges facing young people in our African-American communities are more complex and nuanced than we might understand from writers like Ta-Nehisi Coates. Those who are convinced that the specter of a permanent black underclass is exaggerated will be shaken by this work, as will those who ascribe that status to factors outside of the community, the family, and the individual. It is little wonder that Williams is a controversial figure: his own experiences dash some cherished narratives: he makes a cogent case for individual agency in the face of a vast movement seeking to externalize the causes of the challenges facing youth in the African-American community.Whether you buy into his ideas or choose to dismiss him as a privileged exception is up to you. Come to this book with an open mind, though, and you will leave full of hope for the future.

This was a good memoir from the hip-hop generation, an insider -- from the street side. As an older person, I learned a lot about that culture. I have observed it, but now I have a better handle on it's range and it's appeal. Here is a kid, who in another generation would not have hung out with these people. But America being America, he is attracted to it's popularity, it's showmanship, it's seduction. Young kids are so into the bling, bling of it, that other aspects of their lives and their humanity play second fiddle. Each generation has it's attraction. Thank you Thomas Chatterton Williams for introducing me to your version of growing up in the hip-hop generation. Thanks to your father and mother for standing strong through it all. We lose too many. Love saves another.

This book contains an interesting perspective on how a person's peers and culture can influence the course of their life. As with most memoirs, it difficult to know how much an individual's experience can be generalized to culture as a whole. It is nonetheless useful for providing an example of how to think about our life experience.I think this writer has gotten better in the seven years this book was published and look forward to reading his work in the future.

This book is a must read for every young adult 17 and up. The gist of this book should be discussed at the dinner table with your teenagers. Because of language and sexual overtones it my not be suitable for those 16 and under to read by themselves. (Yes, I am a prude and proud of it.) Thank you Mr. Williams for such an important and outstanding book about your experiences. Your father is truly a great man and awesome father. This book shows how vital it is to have a caring father in the home. Pappy showed his love through the influence of reading lots of books and displaying them. It was these books that began Mr. Williams' journey away from the destructive world of the Hip-Hop culture and being, "real".....Without giving anything else away go out and buy this book. You will not be disappointed. It makes me wonder how many others are out there with similiar situations as to what Mr. Williams went through, but in say, academia, Hollywood, working at the New York Times, or the network news??

Another in the growing genre of those who made good. But the author writes with uniquely appealing modesty, humor, and wisdom and with wonderful literary style. I am recommending this to almost anyone!

This is a great book for examining religions based on their own doctrine, but viewed through the lenses of a fundamentalist christian author (Walter Martin and now additionally Ravi Zacharias). This book views theology from the Christian Bible as it basis and foundation, and has been widely embraced by fundamentalists and evangelicals, but many of the adherents to faiths labeled as cults within the book, have openly opposed the book for obvious reasons.Walter Martin died in 1989 I believe, but he had held to a baptist Christian perspective toward the bible and theology. He and his book are still widely considered an authoritative reference by many fundamentalists and evangelicals. If you are not familiar with Ravi Zacharias (I believe RZIM.org is the website for this ministry) there is a lot of video footage available on youtube that will relate his doctrinal beliefs much better than I could ever do here.In a very condensed nutshell, Ravi Zacharias is a very well educated Christian theologian (originally from India I believe), who is often invited to speak on college campuses and in various venues most speakers would consider too hostile toward Christian beliefs. Based on the videos I have viewed, Ravi seems to genuinely believe Jesus is the Christ prophesied of and made known in the Judaeo Christian Bible, and he therefore serves Jesus according to this belief in a very humble and extraordinarily patient way.Regardless of one's position on Christ or ones determination of Faith, there is a wealth of knowledge from Philosophy, Sociology, History, and Religion found in Ravi Zacharias' teachings. However, if you love learning more about Jesus and hold a bible-believing faith in salvation based on grace and faith in Jesus Christ as I do, you will likely also love Ravi Zacharias' teachings.

A valuable tool to help orient the serious student into the basic tenets of various religions/cults. A quick study which will help inform understanding of teachings, world events and world views. A handy reference to use when someone asks about a particular religion/cult- one can provide a pithy 'sound bite' explanation of what beliefs a cult has/explain what makes that cult different from others.

Classic book...I own the one from 1977 and decided to get the update, since there are a lot more cults out there. Back then we had the "Hare Krishna's" in their orange gowns selling flowers in almost every airport, "Moses David" and the "Children of God," ( a really sick, sexual abomination of a cult!), EST, TM--both of which I believe are still around, although they don't seem to have as much exposure as they did back then--Harold Armstrong's "The World of Tomorrow," which is still around, only it's called "Armstrongism\Anglo-Israelism," the "Moonies," which is Sun Myung Moon, who died a few years ago--and now his wife runs it, "Bahai Faith," "Father Divine," only I think he died and that was the end of that one, I could keep going, but you get the idea.I believe today's are a lot more sinister in their approach, only because the spirit of Satan is stronger on the earth: more crime, more insanity, more evil, more controlling of men's thoughts, actions and lives. While this book does cover his earlier work, Dr. Martin adds newer--and more dangerous cults of today's society in this edition. If you want to be informed, or are just curious, this book is a must.

This is the second time I have owned such an edition. Although the subsequent editions are updated to current data and world conditions, I prefer this original version because the "voice" of Walter Martin is consistent throughout. While the updated version is good and invaluable for study, there were passages within where I could detect the change in language and "voice" as something other than that of Walter Martin's.

I do ministry with college students and it's so helpful to have a book like this which gives an overview of many different cults and their basic beliefs. It's especially helpful for me working in a college setting, where you run into a wide variety of faith systems that have over time, become mainstream like Mormonism. The book for instance shows what key differences Mormonism has with biblical Christianity. Some of the cults in the book, I never even knew existed such as the Unification Church (Moonies) or something that doesn't get as much less attention such as Unitarian Universalism, which help to prepare me for doing ministry with people who may adhear to their beliefs when on campus.

I first saw this book in my church library. I was completely enthralled from the beginning pages until the end. It is most alarming what we DONT KNOW about the different 'religious groups' that are in existence. I had to purchase it for a reference book to return to again and again.

It's a long book, and as I read it over lunch most days, it took a while. What I liked the most was the deep scholarship and very thorough referencing; the author did a tremendous amount of research. A close second is the author's balanced view of some sects' honest Christian stances even when some of their theology is contradictory. I also liked his attitude of compassion towards those who labor in the darkness of various cults or philosophies. Though he is thorough with Bible references, I have difficulty with his almost exclusive use of the King James translation. It's beautiful and useful, but it's my opinion that this version of English puts many hearers off because they may equate the archaic mode of expression with the relevance of following the way of Christ or even of "religion" in general. I would recommend the book to anyone who is interested in being prepared for giving an account of his/her beliefs in Jesus and wouldn't mind putting in the time it would take to digest it. If you are really serious you may have to keep referring to it.

Walter Martin, although deceased is a very learned man with many years of experience in explaining to the lay reader what they may be exposed to.

I gave this book to my elderly Uncle who has been teaching himself to read & speak Spanish. He had complained that all his previous Spanish language dictionaries had been inferior. Since receiving this dictionary he’s constantly raving about how useful it has been. No more complaints. He looooves this dictionary.

When the subject is language arts and the English language is involved, the source for information is Oxford University Press. This is my second Oxford Spanish/English Dictionary, replacing a 20-year-old edition that, along with my Oxford Concise English Dictionary and Fowler's Modern English Usage, has served well over the years. Daily use has resulted in physical deterioration of the older editions along with inevitable changes in language dictated the need to semi-retire them to reference emeritus shelf. The new editions are all that I expected.

What's not to love about this dictionary? It's chock full of all kinds of words. If all you have is a Bantam Spanish-English paperback dictionary or something like that you will need to supplement with a larger more complete dictionary for day-to-day use. And yes, 33$ is a lot to pay in this day and age where electronic information makes print media redundant. However, I like to have the actual book itself from time to time. And you will find it a good investment, because you will use it year after year. It has all kinds of slang and culinary references. For example: chupi = great chupin = fish stewThe English section is quite a bit larger than the Spanish section, though the Spanish section is quite large. The entry words are in blue, while the definitions are in black. Pretty easy to read. Paper quality is actually a little on the thin side, but not ridiculously so. Overall, an excellent reference work.

I owned the first edition and decided to renew. Fourth edition is better in many ways. I miss the thumb index though.

This is an awesome dictionary. It has a section on letter writing, for instance that is detailed and accurate. It approaches Spanish from the English and the Spanish.

VERY NICE dictionary, purchased to replace a 40 year old dictionary that did not include many of the new technology terms being used today. Very happy with the completeness of the dictionary.

I have found the Oxford Spanish Dictionary to be an excellent reference. I also have other spanish-english dictionaries as well as the "Diccionario Esencial de la Lengua Española" which I used extensively before buying the Oxford. I now find that I do not need the others. The coverage is better than the Diccionario Esencial and the examples in the Oxford are excellent.I particularly appreciate how it does not even attempt to provide an English equivalent for many Spanish termd but rather provides extensive examples, with translation, for how they may be used. I have been recently been reading 19 century short stories in Spanish and this dictionary has been a godsend for find many of the more obscure or colloquial terms.

HUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE! Should last a life time!

This book is one of the great items to have in any ones library the needs to educate them selves on thethe African history and to educate their children, I will recommend this book to anyone interested in thehistory of the great African Land.

I have serious issues with this book. I will come back later with details. Now this doesnt mean you should not read it, you should.Well one of my main problems is the title suggests this mainly about Africa. European history and society he talks about just as much. I understand, to some degree, that he needs to offer comparative analysis, it was too much. He was too fixed on Europe and pre colonial Africa, at times, seem like a side noteHe used the word primitive in describing some African cultural practices and societies. Here is an African using the same racist terminology as the oppressor.I am not saying you should not read the book though. I am a critical reader. You should read it.

Professor Cheikh Anta Diop is one of the truly multi-discipline scholars of African history and prehistory. He was an early African centered scholar before the term (if not the concept) of Afrocentricity was even born. His work in African historiography has been widely acknowledged (begrudgingly by in some quarters) as being seminal and original. I wish that more American departments of African and Africana studies would give his writings a more prominent place in their curricula. Perhaps francophone institutions in Africa already do.

I am still reading but nearing the end of this book. I am new to the study of precolonial Africa and this book is very informative and insightful. Diop writes very descriptively about how black civilization "looked" before outside influence, details on their evolution into modern culture is provided. I wanted a book that would give me facts and objective analysis and Diop does exactly this.

Overall a good book. written like a school text. Some of the paragraphs seems unnecessarily wordy and complex. If you are going to read this you have to take time out and be ready to study.

This book is essential for African Americans to understand their original origins and dispel the myths and lies perpetrated by the Europeans and European Americans.

This book is very dated given how long ago Diop wrote it, but it still stands the test of time as new research and discoveries have come to light. His genius shines through.

I cannot understand how people can deny this guy work? Really this dude was a genius. I know that his work was sensible. But i cannot deny that his work is legit. No other scholars have been able to discredit his work. Its a shame that mainstream academy will never allow university to study his works. GREAT BOOK. Grab a copy, its a must.

I am a physician who recently started working for a managed care organization. While I had some previous experience in managed care, I needed to have a fundamental tool to help me with areas I was not familiar with. This book fits that description entirely. It is an outstanding book which is designed for both and novice and intermediate level and I would highly recommend it.One of the nice things about this book is that the chapters themselves are self-contained; in other words, you can choose to read the individual chapters in whatever order you like, without reference to the prior chapters. There are sections in which it makes logical sense to read them in a specific order, but this is not an absolute.If you want to learn about managed care, brush up on what you know, or improve your baseline knowledge, I think that this book is for you. It's well-written, well-researched, and easy to read. A very worthy investment.

It feels like the authors of this book were paid by the word. Chapters have irrelevant sections and sections have unnecessary details. Some examples:-The section on member services describes a call center, including that call centers typically have cubicles with low walls to foster teamwork, an apparently critical detail for students of the healthcare system.-"24 hours per day, 7 days per week (referred to as 24/7)" for those who've never heard the term "24/7"-A section describing a system that used to be separate but has since been combined, followed by a description of how the two used to work when separate, "for clarity". I don't remember if the book even describes how it works now that it's combined.-List after list that include failed systems and ideas or outdated terminology. In some cases knowing what hasn't worked is useful, but mostly it's just clutter that detracts from the important points.-Lists of "keys" to success that include more than a dozen items, with questionable items such as "compassion"Yes, the book is comprehesive; however, the unnecessary detail clouds key points and bores the reader. This book could easily be cut in half without losing any critical information.

I'm a healthcare administration and management student and this is a really great resource even after the class was complete. I have found myself going to this book for references for my other courses. If you want to have a great managed care resource, this is your book. I first rented this book and bought it afterwards because I found it so useful.

If it weren't for so many incorrect

OK, I mostly enjoyed the first book (reminds me of The Librarians TV series). Yes, it's mostly for a younger audience, so I suspend belief for the sake of some, at times, outrageous entertainment. I enjoyed the characters and wanted to continue the story. However... This second book is becoming very tedious. The error rate is increasing at an alarming rate. The first book had some, which is sadly becoming the norm. (Doesn't anyone check their work before releasing it?) But I'm finding multiple errors per page in this one, which just doesn't let me immerse myself in the story. Not only are there various punctuation problems (missing beginning or ending quotes, Im instead of I'm...), within one paragraph he can't even keep straight which vehicle they are in. It's Beryl, it's Bertha, it's Beryl... (But, I LOVED the little twist with Beryl. I won't say what it is so as not to spoil it for others, but one of the modifications was just an absolute hoot!)So, a book that I should breeze through in a couple of hours is taking much longer because I keep getting brought up short (yes, I take notes & report errors). I haven't finished this one & I'm not sure I will. I know there's an update available on #3, so I may give that a shot, hoping they've fixed a bunch of errors. (But why not in the rest of the series?)Mr. Ashmore has a wild imagination. Cleaning up these books could really make for a 4.5 star read.Oh, and, I get that you're a Brit (which is the root of some of the things I stumble over), but, just for your education - they way you've drawn Bruce is SO wrong. Arizonans are nothing like that. You might want to make him from Texas & your characterization would be a touch more accurate. Most Arizonans don't wear cowboy hats, have no drawl, etc. (I should know - I've lived in AZ for over 30 years.)Please go back and proof/edit your work and release an update. It really has the potential to be enjoyable. (Though... I agree with what I saw someone else write about Becky getting a bit annoying.)---Oh! Almost forgot - the TOC is hosed, at least on my copy. It shows Cover, Chapter 2, End. Not particularly useful. Downloaded to both a K5 and PW & neither has a functional TOC. (Book 1 was fine) At the very beginning, there is a list of chapters, unlined as if they are links, but they don't work.---Edit 8/16Finished the book. Very tedious. SO many errors. Very disappointing. I used the PW's reporting feature to report a couple dozen errors, but there were at least that many more that I didn't report because it was becoming a chore. After all, why should Mr. Ashmore get free proofreading services?And, while this may be written for a young audience, one shouldn't be sloppy in plot or mechanics. I don't want to write any spoilers, but he finally treads into the problem (there's a name for it, but I can't recall it right now) where there's a scene that has evidence of something having happened, then something happens, but it then goes back in time & the older incident gets changed from a leap back, but that would mean the first thing never happened, sending someone back in time... I'm not explaining it well, but it's a circular paradox that couldn't happen. Time loop - that's the phrase.And, the more I read, the more I agree with a few others, Becky's really starting to annoy me. She's becoming a little prima donna that is acting like a spoiled brat and is getting away with it. If she were a few years older, she might be able to demand answers and things with a little more credibility. Obviously, Percy keeps caving to their wishes to be put in danger because this is a fantasy book for kids, so it's written for them to live vicariously. I get that. But, still...

Excellently paced and completely worthy successor to Time Hunters 1. We see the kids mature and grow up fast, as kids tend to do when approaching adolescence. The bond between the main protagonists, Uncle Percy, Becky, Joe and Will, deepens as they continue on their adventures travelling through time. We see an introduction of some loveable new characters (and some diabolical characters). As with Time Hunters 1 we see the amazing blending of historical fact and imaginative fantasy. Towards the end I was thinking "how are we going to get out of this one" and "please, don't leave us with a cliff-hanger". A highly satisfying ending that tied up all of the strands developed throughout this wonderful romping adventure. The characters are beautifully drawn, there is a balance between fun and real human drama, the plotting is meticulous and ingenious. While reading this book you'll chuckle and you'll tear up and you'll have to read just one more chapter. As Bob, the "female impersonator" in Blackadder Goes Forth says: "always leave them wanting more" and that's exactly what the author does. Now we have to wait for Time Hunters 3. Spewing (as kids used to say in Australia).Oh yeah, and also kids might like this book.

This book carries on from the first in the series, and is more or everything - more action, more thrills, more nail-biting, edge of the seat action, and an even more satisfying conclusion.The plotting is tight and has lots of unexpected twists and turns, in time as well as events, but it all comes together perfectly in the end. We see our old favourite characters, Becky, Joe and Uncle Percy, Will and the rest, plus some exciting new ones. The action moves to such diverse places as New York and the Caribbean and plenty of diverse times as well. There is a flavour of the Pirates or the Caribbean movies too - which adds to the fun.Altogether an excellent successor to book one and leaves us looking forward to the next installment.

I was reading this before I read it to my school age students for the summer program and I'm glad I did. A nice time traveling adventure story but with a little bit of profanity, nothing children probably haven't heard already but I didn't think it was necessary for a middle school level book of this type.

Another shining series that engages the young & the young of heart.5 stars for top value, great reads, great entertainment.I bought the first of the series from an ad-hoc flag via Kindle Buffet, consumed it & bought the 2nd without hesitation (no sampling needed). At the end of the 2nd, left still wanting for more, rinse and repeat upon realising the 3rd of the series was also already out there.The series "may" be a little (very little) predictable in parts but that's not necessarily a bad thing & made up for in equal or more parts of the unexpected. Great twists on some points of history & mythology. NOT in any way shape or form a time travelling norm of travel in time, get trapped & then endure a long drawn out possibly boring account of how to get back.Look forward to touching base "solidly" with the kids Dad; hope that is coming very soon in the series & can't wait for the next in the series; please keep them coming.
