Seidel was our required textbook for Medical Practice at my medical school, but after having experienced baby Bates in undergrad, decided to purchase this one instead. So glad I did, because the physical exam sections are set up so that if a patient has any abnormal signs or answers to questions, Bates gives you guidelines about differential diagnoses right next to the question, doing a lot of the inductive reasoning for you. I think Bates' pictures are better than Seidel's as well. Would purchase again, and have recommended it to my classmates.
I purchased this textbook brand new only due to the inclusion of the access code for online content. In every other text I've had with online access, there is an electronic copy of the textbook and then varying amounts of other student resources (e.g., review questions, assessment videos, etc.). Be forewarned! This book does NOT include an electronic copy of the text!!! With the access code, the student only gets chapter review questions, heart and breath sounds, and some assessment stuff like skill checklists and guidelines. I emailed the publishing company to inquire about this, but they did not respond. I am very disappointed because I needed the e-text in addition to the hard copy. I am not at all happy to learn I could have paid half or less for this textbook if I had not "needed" the new copy with the "access" code.
This book literally fell apart as I opened it for the first time. The back cover states “activate your ebook†but gives no further instruction. The website provided on the inside cover has no resources for an ebook.
Although you may be required to purchase for a course, be VERY CAREFUL with it. The content itself is good, but the quality of the manufacturing is absolute garbage. My book had many instances where the pages were not cut from printing and in cutting them they turned out jagged and crumpled. My book only had a few pages fall out, but 3 other classmates had their entire books fall apart. They had to purchase plastic binders and bind their individual chapters together. They also had many pages missing, one girl had an entire chapter missing!
the binding on this book is awful. I ordered it ahead of time, and therefore didn't open it until my course started, at which point it was outside the return window. Within the first 2 days of using the books, pages started falling out and now half the book is loose with individual pages. I question if there is any glue in the binding at all. Additionally, the print is slightly blurred, suggesting cheap printing. I am not looking forward to referencing this book for the remainder of my summer semester. The material seems par for an assessment book, nothing outstanding. I have an older assessment book from a different author which is better organized and manufactured; I plan to use it instead as it has all the same information as Bates.
This book has many pages still fused together, like it has not been cut properly. I would estimate that one page per chapter is like this. I have had to rip the pages apart from one another. There are pages that are still attached by a small amount of paper, then some pages are completely fused. So frustrating. As for the content of the book, it is fine.
Easy to read lay out. Was thankful to have the E-Text and access to quizzes and exams that I needed for my online course. However, the access to videos that the rest of my online class received with their new textbook was NOT included in my new book bought from here. The videos would have really helped me with my head to toe assessment as watching them was apart of our homework assignment that I was not able to complete.
I use this book constantly for school. It is great for what i need it for and love that it has a TON of pictures and easy explanations.
