These show, organized by Buffalo Bill and others, were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Presenting Plains Indian culture as Indian culture, they made an indelible impression on audiences in the United States and Europe. Moses also the participation of Native Americans as a way to make a living and to preserve their culture. This analysis is interesting if controversial, but for me the great value of the book is in attention to the way that wild west shows contributed to the formation of the popular perception of what an "Indian" is like.

That, in a nutshell, is Klepp's topic in Revolutionary Conceptions. Klepp maintains that while the American Revolution was unfolding on the world stage, another, female-led revolution was unfolding behind the scenes as American couples began to delay marriage, space births, and curtail childbearing several years before the wives reached menopause. These changes transformed the pattern of women's lives and their very conception of their purpose in life.This engaging book is a surprisingly quick read as scholarly works go. It has a strong statistical foundation, with due attention to regional and class differences. Klepp approaches her topic imaginatively: in one lavishly illustrated chapter, she explores how images of women gradually changed from emphasizing fertility to emphasizing self-control. The chapter on the technology of birth control is less satisfactory because Klepp doesn't wrap it up with a clear assessment of exactly how the typical Revolutionary-era woman limited family size, but she does at least provide a comprehensive overview of the full range of methods available, with an emphasis on emmenagogues. In short, Revolutionary Conceptions is a well-researched and fascinating book that challenges many previous theories about when and why Americans began to limit family size. Highly recommended.

This is a brilliant book that brings the eighteenth and early nineteenth century alive in the realm that historians find most difficult to discover: the history of private life, including sexuality and family life. In sum, this book argues that the real American Revolution for free women was their decision to have smaller families ca. 1760-1820, declaring independence from the "teeming bellies" esteemed earlier in the 18th C in favor of fewer children and greater attention and care for the children's educations. I have taught this book repeatedly in undergraduate classes as well as to graduate students, and they love the fascinating insights as well as the larger argument the book makes, which they find largely persuasive.The book also features a striking essay analyzing 18th C Anglo-American women's portraiture as a clue to these transformations, which we use in class alongside Google image searches of the paintings so we can see the full-color versions of the portraits included in the book (and some that aren't as well.)

The paradigm of the investigator placing themselves "inside the tunnel" to avoid hindsight bias is a powerful metaphor.Some of the chapters get to be a bit hard going - with lots of restating the basic tenet of Old View vs New View though.All in all - quite thought provoking and worth a read.

Found the book interesting and helpful. In am in Process Safety and it made me think about how I do HAZOPs and PHAs. This version is better organized than revision 2.

It also has 3 holes already punched in the side so you can quickly add it to any binder. I would recommend this to anyone just starting to learn the Spanish language and who would like a quick and easy reference guide.

A nice overview of the basics of Spanish grammar for my homeschooling daughter. It's a lot of details to take in but it helps especially when she needs either a concise explanation or a quick reminder of something specific.

Useful for students at all levels. It is lamented. The only thing is that the print is really small.

I bought this in the bundle of 3 and keep it in the front of my Spanish class notebook as a quick and handy reference. It obviously does not have everything one needs to learn a language, but it does hit many important words, rules, and conjugations. It is nicely laminated and I feel that I will use it often in my studies of the Spanish language.

This study chart works well with my Rosetta Stone subscription. If only the typing were a little larger. I find myself using a mechanical magnifying glass to read the charts.

I was particularly interested in the descriptions of how our human self image has previously hampered our ability to understand the Neandertals, and how science, in the form of the scientific method, and modern genetics, are helping us see facts, unfiltered by those biases. If you are interested in Neandertals, travel, food, drink, the Dordogne region of France and its people, the people doing this work, or what it's like to work in a modern dig site, you will enjoy this book.

Having read Bahrami's Café d'Oc with pleasure, I moved on to Café Neandertal and am enjoying it. However, as one reviewer noted, she could have used a (better?) editor, and midway through the book my attention is flagging a bit. Still, a lot of her observations and the information and impressions she receives from the noted archeologists are fascinating and offer a new way to look at the Dordogne and the people who have lived there throughout the eons. Since I love French cuisine, have explored Lascaux II and the Musée national de Préhistoire, and have visited Sarlat, her books are all the more interesting for me. So four stars, but not five.

I had expected a book which contain new discoveries , but instead, this book was more like a travel log.

It was an entertaining and informative book. She has a good writing style, and depth off knowledge in the area.

Really loved the writing and story at first but then it dragged. Put it down after halfway and found I didn't want to pick it up again. A new and interesting topic for me but didn't hold my intetest

Of the 3 kinect programming books I got (mainly cuz each one has its own SDK/language of choice), this one got me up & running the fastest. However, the instructions are dated for installing on windows, they are meant for the original X-box kinect sensor not the one dedicated to windows. Please see Ramsri Goutham's excellent tutorial:[...]In case the link is taken out of the review you can g**gl* kinect sensor for openni. Basically, there is a different method to install the correct drivers for the Kinect for Windows product. All the instructions for the OpenNI software in the book likely predate the Kinect for Windows product and fail to mention that the most common problem now has nothing to do with x86 vs. x64 but that the original Kinect hacks were for the Xbox kinect, NOT THE KINECT FOR WINDOWS DEVICE!!!! You MUST use the avin2 package and replace the “default” kinect sensor mod, and you MUST force the computer to NOT use the automatic windows update drivers, and you MUST force the computer to install the primesense drivers by navigating from driver update to “choose from a list” and selecting “all devices” and scrolling to PrimeSense and overriding the driver not signed warnings!!! Whew!

The material for this book is very out of date. I am sure it was a good book a few years ago but now all of the libraries are out of date, and there is no way to even run the examples shown.

Once I received the PDF version from O'Reilly, I found the book to be well written. It provides in-depth technical coverage of the Kinect 360 as a 3D camera. Perfect for my application. The Kindle version that I originally purchases from Amazon did not include the illustrations. A big Thank You to Customer Service at O'Reilly for quickly correcting the problem.

I just got this book and am enjoying it very much. I love that there are resources like this out there for people geek out on.The main reason for the review was to save some people time if they purchase the book a year after its publication date like me. Getting up and running can be a frustrating task going by the book, when I probably would have been better off just downloading everything without a care in the world.In the setup section it has a clear warning not to install the Microsoft SDK, otherwise your OpenNI stuff will not work. So I didn't install it. strangely it was working from the OpenNI stuff, but everytime I ran the examples in Processing, just said over and over can't find the device. So I finally gave in and installed the SDK because it sort of said to do so on the SimpleOpenNI site. Everything worked like a charm. There was no mention of this error in the book, and little if any online mention of it.So..word of caution, even if there was a compatibility issue with the SDK when this book was first written, the open source community has clearly resolved that. INSTALL AWAY!After that headache, I was up and running the examples in no time. Looking forward to reading the rest of the book frustration free:)

This book is 5 star for non-programmers. Mr. Borenstein walks the reader through the process of writing Kinect applications in a simple straightforward way that is extremely easy to follow. The code in the book is written using Processing (processing.org) which means even people with almost no background in software development and be up and running very quickly! If you are new to all of this then I recommend you read this book! You'll be amazed at how easy it is to write some really impressive Kinect programs.The book is a 4 start for professional software developers. Still a great value for the price and it will give you a quick ramp-up into Kinect development. But after reading this you'll want to check out something more technical if you are interesting in writing applications using the Microsoft Kinect SDK or one of the several open source tool sets.
