I bought this book thinking it would provide additional details of Nat Turner's rebellion, and then learned that no one possesses detailed documentation of that time. Doesn't matter. I disagree with the criticism that the book is racist. If one were to take only those criticized passages and read them out of context, then yes, one could think Nat Turner's sexual fantasies were written as part of a racist stereotype. But, I think the critics miss the point. The fantasies illustrate the white attitude towards Nat that he is less than a man. When a beautiful young white woman interacted with Nat Turner as if he were an innocent child, and not a man, the fantasies lept to his mind without his control. I think this is part of Styron's strategy in imagining the myriad psychological effects slavery had on a person. Besides, the author doesn't have Nat going off and intentionally daydreaming sexual fantasies. Turner's intentional thoughts are more lofty. The point, I think was to show that he is a normal man, not treated as such by those in power. That is why he hates the women so much when these feelings emerged. But, really, these are minor passages in the book, compared to everything else used by the author to convey what the life of a slave might have been like.I immersed myself in the style and feeling of this book, just as much as I noted story details, which we must remember were mostly developed in Styron's mind, in order to present the oppression of slavery permeating the psychology, society, and culture of everyone in that time setting. Often, Nat finds himself traded for oxen when he works temporarily on another farm. Even white characters portrayed as the nicer slave owners verbalize the insulting attitudes, indicating that they are kind to animals. Thus twisted message of their attitude towards the rank of black people becomes clear. There can never be kindness in an institution that allows one person to own another, simply as a beast of burden. As a result, justification emerged among whites, as a psychological defense, that the institution was required, based on racial superiority. Whether the white person considered himself a benevolent master, providing housing and food in return for work, or whether the white person was a sadist towards any human under his control, the fact remained that both types of whites believed that black people were so incapable of taking care of themselves that generally they had to be owned! That is the message that was conveyed to me through Styron's imaginative interpretation of circumstances that would have driven Nat Turner to take the actions he did. The attitudes of all whites, and of the culture, conveyed this message, and it was not surprising that some victims of the horrors of slavery were then driven to murderous rage.I thought the book was a masterpiece. Let yourself become immersed in the feelings generated through the author's story telling, and remember that generating these feelings is the intent of the author, because very little is actually known about Turner's individual life. What a horrific, sad legacy in our history, this idea that one human being could legally be owned by another. This book makes sure we do not forget.

I love this book - it makes me very uneasy though to praise it. Today's sensitive racial climate suggests that only a black man can write fiction about a black man's life. James Baldwin disagreed, but at the same time the enormity of the injustices almost compels a veto on the idea. However, this probably makes the book a singular experience, and one I value very much.

This is a tough one to review. Due to the subject, it is very difficult for one, in this day, to separate the book from the fact that it was written by a white Southerner. Obviously, this issue has been central to public discourse about it, as Styron himself acknowledges in the Afterword.Ultimately though, one has to judge the book on its own merits, right? Without question, Styron writes well. His prose is enjoyable to read in this as well as his other books. In historical fiction, though, characterization and authenticity are important. And the choices he makes for his (version of the) protagonist are questionable. Perhaps predictably, my big questions center on those choices that invited the most controversy in the book's early days. Namely, is there any reason to throw in a homosexual incident? It doesn't seem to fit the character we're watching. Would an educated Nat really have had rape fantasies about a white woman? Is the implication that it's in his nature?You see? One is immediately drawn into the socio-political issues. They're hard not to think about. But here's an even more challenging question. Would I (or anyone else) object to the choices made had Styron's friend James Baldwin made them? I feel like I end up projecting my own take on slavery and race relations onto the book, including all the baggage that comes with that. Unfortunately, that makes this review so subjective as to be not very valuable. As a sidebar, I wonder if this book has come to be seen as ground zero for the intellectual movement against so-called cultural appropriation?For what it's worth, I'd recommend reading the book.

He and his men are a story of courage, who give their lives to battle an ocean of injustice, only to end up removing only a few capfuls of its bitter water.The author's account of the deeds of Nat Turner are fact. but the narrative of his slave life, focused on the physical, emotional, sexual, spiritual, psychological, biological and moral aspects of this being, fluctuates between fact and fiction, and has generated both positive and negative responses to his work.Besides his elaborate focus on the slave leader, the author tells a second important story--that of slave owners and their dependents. The author, an admitted southerner and descendent of slave owners, brings first hand knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of both groups, as well as the slave system in the U.S., which, I believe, gives credibility to this important work.

I have been intrigued by the life of one our greatest founding fathers, the first Treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton.This is a historical based novel on the life of Alexander Hamilton from early childhood, his relationship with his wife Elizabeth Schuyler, his indiscressions and untimely death premature death at the hands of this nation's third Vice President, Aaron Burr.The book is well researched. Her writing style is entertaining and easy to follow.

Alexander Hamilton – the nation’s first Treasury Secretary and a man extremely reviled. A man that had become more of a footnote in history – other than his notorious death by Aaron Burr – until a Broadway musical became a smash hit and revived interest in this “soldier, thinker, statesman”. In “The Hamilton Affair”, Elizabeth Cobbs has created a novel as fascinating as Hamilton was, and one that sheds light on his unique place in history.I confess – I was initially attracted to this book because of all the brouhaha about the musical. I was curious about the man that inspired such a massive hit, and knew little about him from my high school history classes. I prepared myself for a boring affair that I hoped might enlighten me a bit – what I got was a well-done and extremely interesting book about both Hamilton and his wife Eliza. Both viewpoints are covered in this book, and Cobbs takes great care to try and do justice to both. While the book portrays Hamilton in a positive light, and attempts to demonstrate just how unjust the characterization of him has often been, it also does not shy away from the damage he caused his wife and his family.Regardless of one’s feeling about the man as a whole, it is undeniable that both he and his wife accomplished some amazing things in their lifetimes. Creating the Treasury department from the ground up, ensuring veterans were able to get back pay after the war that created our nation, and even the creation of the first private orphanage in New York – these things and many more can be attributed to these amazing individuals. Sadly, Hamilton never got a chance to tell his own story, and it appears that he truly gave his life in service of his country – for it was in that service that he made so many enemies, one of whom eventually killed him.Overall, I really think this is an excellent book. It’s a great place for Hamilton newbies (like myself) to begin, and might even have a unique perspective on the man for those more familiar with him than myself. I highly recommend this book, and – as my highest praise – it has given me the desire to research its subject even more thoroughly than before.

Okay where to start... This book had me hooked from chapter one. If you love the "what are men to rocks and mountians" sass of Elizabeth Bennet, you are going to love Elizabeth "Eliza" Hamiliton, and if you believe true love stories should be more complicated than "they met, fell in love, and lived happily ever after", then you're going to love this book even more.I was hesitant to jump on the Hamilton craze that has followed the Broadway play, for fear that it wouldn't live up to its expectations, but this book was the perfect start to my new love affair.The Hamilton Affair shows that life and love aren't always pretty, but you can either choose to sink into it's shallows, or stand up and hold strong.If you are reading these reviews to decide if this book is worth it, please just click buy! Although I’m not a fan of historical fiction, I took a chance on The Hamilton Affair by Elizabeth Cobby through Amazon Vine as Alexander Hamilton is one of my favorite Founding Fathers. I was pleasantly surprised that this novel was so well-researched and well-written. One observation, however, is that I thought The Hamilton Affair was going to be primarily about Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds, which brought such tragic consequences. But the Reynolds’ affair doesn’t come into play until over halfway through the novel.With the Hamilton craze happening right now because of the hit musical by the same name, The Hamilton Affair covers well-known territory. The viewpoints alter between Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, who he will marry in 1780. The Hamilton Affair follows the timeline of Hamilton’s life fairly faithfully from the time of his early childhood in the Caribbean to his death at the hands of Aaron Burr in a duel in 1804. Cobby uses letters, newspaper accounts, and journal entries to flesh out the story. She also adds some fictional characters, including Ajax Manley, a black Revolutionary War soldier who will become great friends with Hamilton and his family. Cobby doesn’t go into great detail about many aspects of Hamilton’s life, but she does try to show you what she felt both Hamiltons were thinking and feeling throughout their lives and especially, in their marriage. Maybe the author comes close to what actually happened, and maybe not. But she certainly helps us visualize what might have been.One thing that was especially disturbing is how toxic the political situation was during Hamilton’s life. We may think that 2016 is pretty bad, but we have nothing on the infighting between Hamilton, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison and Burr.The very sad part about Alexander Hamilton’s life is that because he was killed so young, those who outlived him have written their version of history, negating the genius of Hamilton and his wonderful contributions to our country. It has taken 212 years after Hamilton’s death, but he’s finally getting his due.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Hamilton Affair. Though the title indicates it's about the Affair, it's really about the truly remarkable and misunderstood man, and his much loved wife, Eliza. Would that there were more love "affairs" of this nature today! Surviving an illicit affair is devastating to the best of marriages between flawed humans. Surviving also the senseless death of a child as well? Only by God's grace and much forgiveness could that be possible!

More than that it is a good book for the curious woman wanting to know what it means to be dominant. It is NOT what you read about or watch in fiction.This guide won't transform you into the porn Dom with whips and leather (unless you already have that tendency, and need it unlocked with a bit of pushing). It is what you make it however. If you want the role of Goddess. Your man will worship you, serve you, please you AND LOVE EVERY SECOND!! Believe me it is not a dream.Every woman has the power to bring men to their knees. A Dominant woman keeps a man on their knees until she is fully satisfied.

I personally think this book was pretty awful.I've been a dominant woman in the lifestyle two years with a long term live in partner of whom I'm engaged to. Our dynamic has never wavered, and we live a female led relationship 24/7. And I hang out on a pretty awesome BDSM forum and have read and interacted on it quite a lot. I've purchased this book, The Mistress Manual, and Uniquely Rika so I have been subjected to different writing styles and points of view.If I'd read this book as total a newbie, I would have been like, "huh, interesting bedroom games and thoughts..." and put it on the bookshelf never to use as "a lifestyle" ever. She does not present a lifestyle from which to live with a long term loving partner day to day. This book was written from the prospective a professional dominatrix. At most, it'll help you be safe; if about twice a month you want to hit on someone.In the beginning, it makes a bunch of judgments and uses a bunch of labels that I really don't care for. Why do you need a name that implies a lower status just because you're not "hardcore" and "24/7" ? Everyone does it as much as they need and want. No need for such labels.Regarding sadism and masochism, it was a lot of technical info with a few diagrams and safety details I already 99% knew from learning online. If you don't have the time to learn from online about S/M then perhaps this is a book for you, the S/M newbie.Regarding dominance and submission...Well, I didn't see much of it. The author is a professional "dominatrix". Which makes her a Top with, hopefully, skills to illustrate a fantasy for a client. I hated how she presented D/s as so much work for her and none for him. Example?"This is the clothes you have to buy and wear to give -him- a good time and make you feel like you're playing the part." This concept of constantly catering to the male fantasy is a recurring theme. Don't get me wrong, clothes can give you a lot of confidence and really put you in the mood. But I can top and dominate in jeans and a t shirt just as well and feel no need to wear all leather just to give a potential partner a hard on. Remember, I'M not getting PAID because I'm a lifestyle dominant- not a pro. I don't have the money to buy all the frivolities she suggests to make everything a good time for -him-. My current partner doesn't expect it! And I would just feel resentful if any future partners expected it.I think D/s is better represented elsewhere. I did a review on "Uniquely Rika," and highly recommend it.

The audience for this book will quickly discover that this woman knows how to write and she knows her subject backwards and forwards, and inside and out. This is a more advanced look at D&S and S&M than the majority of those on the market. While most of the techniques described in minute detail in this guidebook are far beyond this reader's personal experience, there is always something useful for anyone to learn from reading it. It does answer some of the nagging questions that everyone curious about the scene seeks to know--even if they aren't going to personally try those most advanced experiments in extreme sensation, domination, fisting, humiliation, slave training, water sports or exhibition and group party games. Ditto for actually trying pony training, caning, using the bullwhip and violet wands. This book purports to be intended for women to turn their consenting monogamous adult male partners into happy, sexually satisfied silly putty. The boast is justified. As a male, this reviewer doubts that many men could describe the "in's and out's" of the psychology of humiliation, mind games or other detailed techniques for driving males crazy with desire half as well as this former dominatrix-turned-author. There is no question from the material covered in the book that this woman has vast experience with her subject matter and she doesn't hesitate to share her knowledge in excruciating detail after detail. Even the readers of these games will know instinctively that what she is describing works--sometimes it even begets results just from reading her thoughts as she transfers them to the printed page. Because this book is much more advanced than most on the subject, a lot of time is devoted to playing safely. Two different anatomy charts of the male body are included with the danger zones for each activity clearly marked. It's like a scene out of the old movie classic "Spartacus" where the ex-gladiator drill sergeant is using Kirk Douglas's body to paint the various kill and injury areas to show the other would-be gladiators. One doesn't have to read far to understand how fragile the human body really is. It's obvious why Varrin goes to the trouble of pointing out the danger points for some of her extreme S&M games. For instance she reminds the reader never to use the violet wand above the waist and to know if your partner has any kind of heart trouble or a pace maker. Electricity is always dangerous even in mild doses. Like any serious writer or practitioner of these D&S and S&M scenes, communication, knowledgeable consent, detailed planning, safe sex, and more communication even during and after the scene is completed are indispensable. The reason for the increasing popularity of this kind of play is simple: done correctly it can make a sexual tryst last for hours or even all night and into the next day. Where else can a loving couple have seemingly endless sex? And because it is so satisfying, great care must be taken to protect one's playmate from any kind of injury or real, unwanted harm including utter exhaustion. This book will definitely provide enlightening reading for interested would-be participants as well as the people who are simply curious about the practices described. It's one of the better tomes on the complex subject. And while it's primarily intended as a guide for women to use on their willing, kinky male lovers or husbands, most of the techniques can easily be adapted for any combination of males and females. Even games for "hen parties" are suggested. We improve ourselves by becoming more aware of how our power of awareness functions. Rock often expresses this idea metaphorically by telling us that it is to our advantage to develop a strong "director."When we enhance our self-awareness, we appreciate that human beings are motivated by five types of phenomena: Social status, Certainty, Autonomy (independence), Relatedness (social connections), and Fairness. Enhancement of these five dimensions is experienced as rewarding. Diminution along any of these dimensions is just as aversive as physical pain.When we are suffering because one or more of these dimensions has been threatened, we can use three procedures to restore our mental well-being.The first is labeling. By describing an emotion we can reduce it. If someone insulted me, I can tell myself that I am angry. That will make me feel better.The second procedure is reappraisal. By changing our perspective or our interpretation of a situation, we can lessen the negative emotion. If someone insulted me, I can take his perspective and realize that he is so upset that he is not responsible for his actions. Or, perhaps I could reinterpret the situation and realize that what I took to be an insult might not have been one after all.The last procedure is lowering expectations. Decades ago I discovered that if many people told me that I must see a movie because it was amazing, I would often be disappointed, because it failed to be as amazing as I had expected it to be. On the other hand, if I just saw some random flick on a whim, and it was decent, I was really happy, because it was much better than I thought it would be. We experience exceeded expectations as highly rewarding, and unmet expectations as painful. I actually stopped reading a couple of books that I am in the middle of, because the potential impact of this book seemed so much greater.EVALUATIONIt should come as no surprise to readers of Rock's book, that the over-the-top reviews of his book lessened my appreciation of it. Reading these reviews stimulated very high expectations in me. Unfortunately, those high expectations were not met. This book has had very little, if any, impact on my life. Very few of the reviewers have indicated what particular and specific changes they made based on the book's recommendations, and how that helped them. I have found it quite difficult to translate the insights given in the book into practical changes in my life.As I stated at the beginning of the Content section, the overarching message of the book is the importance of metacognition, which is usually called "mindfulness." If your goal is to develop your powers of mindfulness, I can recommend books that give much more practical, useful advice than Rock's book. I started doing mindfulness practice about six months ago. To be perfectly frank, it's not at all clear to me that I have become any more mindful than I was before I started. But I am aware of the fact that there is a lot of evidence that mindfulness practice benefits most people who engage in it, so I soldier on hoping that at some point I will notice that mindfulness is benefiting me as well.As far as lessening negative emotions using labeling, reappraisal, and lowered expectations, you would be better served by reading a cognitive-behavioral therapy book with practical exercises that help you develop those skills. David Burns's The Feeling Good Handbook is an excellent choice.If you want to know more of the science Rock discusses, Heidi Grant Halvorson's Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals, covers some of the same studies Rock does, but she presents it in a more accessible manner, making it much easier to implement changes in my life.If, instead of self-improvement, your goal is to be stimulated intellectually on the subject of awareness and thought, take a look at Daniel Dennett's Consciousness Explained, or Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow.In conclusion, Rock's book does a decent job synthesizing a lot of content into a relatively coherent presentation. But I had trouble translating this content into practical changes in my life. There are other books on psychology and mindfulness that do a better job demonstrating exactly what the reader needs to do to bring about positive behavioral and emotional changes.

I have bought this book for many of my fellow solo lawyers. This one of the top 3 most important books I have read in the past 3 years - and I read a lot of books. It will cause you to reorganize how you approach each work day. Most importantly, it helped me overcome the feeling that I had at the end of each work day that I hadn't done enough. Once you understand the limitations of your brain, you stop expecting yourself to perform beyond the actual capacity of your brain. So instead of feeling defeated everyday, your performance is "just right." I'm grateful for this book.

It is a very interesting book, very informative, but was a somewhat difficult read for me. Maybe it was just me, but I had to read some of the passages a few times to get the full understanding of the authors message. Then, I always felt I was still missing something. As a person with both Left Brain and Right Brain capabilities my creativity is sometimes living in different world. And the problem of better understanding the book, "Your Brain at Work" rests in my ability to sort things out in a rational manner, and at a higher Fog Index than I'mused to. I read this book over the course of a few weeks on the way to work, roughly about a chapter per day. I found that this timing allowed me to process and practice the lessons shortly after reading them. The theme off this book is around self-awareness and accessing our "director" to actively choose how we spend our time, interact with people and ourselves. I found it helpful and hope you do too. On a side note, I recommend reading the Surprises about the brain and tips to try at the end of each chapter before you begin reading each chapter.

This is a great book.It explores the limitations of the brain and its ability to prioritize, remember, and recall information. Sounds pretty dry right? Well actually it isn't. The author uses a very easy to understand analogy and real life situations that turn these complex topics into a fairly quick read.I took a lot from this book. I have put several of the ideas into practice and have seen results in my overall capacity to prioritize and process information. If you are a busy professional, I see no reason why you cannot get at least something out of reading Mr. Rock's book.My only complaint is that through the situational analogies recommendations are sometimes given that would be very difficult to follow in a fast paced corporate world...but I was even able to take some of these business situational ideas and apply them to personal tasks. It really is a valuable book. So much so, I read it twice.

This version of Beowulf has a great deal to offer to the reader in terms of its sound, content, and visuals. I started by reading the section of the introduction entitled "The Poem." It gives the historical background of the Beowulf manuscript, and more importantly it helps the reader know what to look for in the structure of the text. For example, I looked for the "three archetypal sites of fear" described by Heaney: the "barricaded night-house," the "infested underwater current," and the "reptile-haunted rocks of a wilderness" when I read the poetry about Beowulf's heroic deeds fighting Grendel, Grendel's Mother, and the dragon. In the next section "About This Translation," Heaney describes his patterns for the alliteration that give the poem its distinctive sound. I am a museum lover, so I enjoyed the pictures of swords and the wonderful artifacts found at the burial sites and in the bogs. I found myself showing some of them to others. My dentist admired the picture of a metal boar meant to illustrate decorations on war gear. I also found myself showing off some of the pictures of gold pendants and necklaces to various people to explain how a gold hoard was an important sign of civilization and prosperity in the culture of the Danes and the Geats. At the end of the book, in an "Afterword," Professor Niles writes about visualizing the narrative and explains his rational for choosing the various types of illustrations. For example, the outdoor photos that illustrate concepts such as "night-shapes" at sunset are meant to establish a scene in the poem or to create an analogue to it according to Niles. When I came upon an instance of two textual pages together without an illustration or a photo, I missed seeing one there. To me that proves that the visuals did illuminate the text.So, I thought that everything was well done, and it is refreshing to see a publisher support such an artistic effort. It must have taken a big budget and a lot of effort to put this book together.

I don't have the time to give this book the review it deserves.I teach Beowulf, and this is my favorite edition, especially for high school/college students: a true, easy-flowing, poetic, story-telling translation without sounding like a modern translation. I've been reading this with my kids (16 and 11 yrs.) over the summer and they actually really like it! The addition of the pictures helps them understand what Medieval weapons, jewelry, etc. looked like. And the translation is easy enough for them to understand for the most part. They still need a little clarification every so often.

I teach Beo to my HS Juniors and wish I could buy one for all 80 of them. I have given this book away twice to students who are especially smitten by Beowulf and plan to do so again. This is this standard text of the epic poem, but it is illustrated with artifacts described in the text. Very nice way to get a handle on the culture. Nicely done. I'd recommend it because it will give anyone a glimpse into the world described in this old story. Can't lose with this edition.

If English is these authors' native tongue, my name is Venkatanarasimha Rajuvaripet, which it is not. Nor am I from Mumbai, which is probably the hometown of these authors. The stilted writing and numerous grammatical errors render reading this book more challenging than necessary. The seven or so five-star reviews must be from their countrymen, who speak English a similar stilted and incorrect manner.

As a programmer, it's hard not to notice the tremendous excitement around and potential in Machine Learning and especially Artificial Intelligence these days. At the same time, for a complete newbie to the field, the space is so big it can be overwhelming to know where and how to get started. I just wanted to get a good vantage point on the field and an overview of the terms I'd seen bandied about.The book delivered, in spades. I like that it went over what it called the Machine Learning Algorithms and then gave a flavour of so many different kinds of other algorithms and use cases out there.My only one complaint is that it didn't present an introduction in Reinforcement Learning and deep learning at all. But it is okay because I need to master only supervised and unsupervised Learning techniques.

This book is a very convenient and a good survey of fundamental concepts (linear algebra, statistics and probability), different learning algorithms (Regression, Classification, Clustering and Associations) and practical considerations (data set, training and validation, outliers, missing data, best practices, overfitting and underfitting).The book is very nice and is consistent and coherent presentation of all of those ideas. The book is also packed with all the advantages and downsides about all the learning techniques and algorithms.As someone with an intermediate level of knowledge and experience of Machine Learning, I am grateful for this book, because it explains very clearly all the important concepts and elements.The book has excellent scope and depth, and I am confident that anyone will find this book to be very exciting and perhaps unique in its ability to take the reader to the next level. I was personally excited to learn about how to deal with missing data and outliers.Having said all of this, I think that everyone with beginner or intermediate level would benefit from this book. This book answers many of the questions that one is likely to have while learning Machine Learning fundamentals, and that's one of the book's tremendous values.I think this book is an excellent one in Machine Learning by AI Sciences, and I highly recommend it for gaining the solid background needed to have a thrilling experience with the Machine Learning practical books.In summary, I am very happy with the purchase of this book, and I think the book will be a great benefit to many beginner in the Machine Learning and AI Sciences field.
