If Coben is not a member of your stable of regular reads, add him to the list. His plotting is expert and his characters are engaging and fun. Myron is a nice blend of Parker's Spenser and Crais's Elvis Cole. The over-the-hill athlete is a nice fixture in crime fiction and this one, a lawyer/sports agent/investigator pursues a unique combination of activities. His lethal preppie sidekick Win is a category fiction staple, but Win's unprepossessing exterior and stone killer ways also represent a unique combination. The pages fly by and the skill level is high. Enjoy.

I am a 74 year old retired psychologist and an avid reader with a passion for Myron Bolitar the hero of a series written by Harlan Coben. Fade Away, like most of the Coben books that I have read has an interesting mystery tale this time revolving around a missing basketball star player. But the stars are for his characterizations. Even the minor characters have personalities. The dialogue is sharp and witty and even when wisecrack remarks are out of place in some situations, our somewhat neurotic anti-hero becomes even more endearing, The background basketball scenes are interesting and realistic. Fade Away misses the 5 stars by having an ending that appears suddenly, almost as if the author got a bit tired so he tied up all the ends quickly and went to have a cup of coffee. But all in all Harlan Coben's understanding of people and relationships within a fast moving plot made this a terrific and fun read.

I've been a Harlan Coben fan ever since a woman I met in Ecuador gave me one of his books to read. This story flows very well and keeps you guessing until nearly the end. The sexual content I noted is very mild (by today's standard), related to the lead character sleeping over at his girlfriend's place and a reference to one woman's "outstanding" anatomical feature, which was actually an important part of the story--but not in a sexual way. If you are an English "purist" like I am, you will find a couple of issues with the grammar, but nothing too onerous. All in all, the book was so enjoyable, I'm reading another book in the series and plan to read all of them.

I didn't realise that I'd bought a few of this author's books and had them in my TBR folder. It was a pleasant surprise. This is the third book in the series and I have read them totally out of order but it hasn't detracted from my enjoyment. Here Myron gets roped into looking for his missing basket ball rival and ex-husband, Greg, of his ex-girlfriend, Emily, from college. Greg and Emily are going through a nasty divorce when Greg goes missing. Greg is a basketball star and the owner of the team drafts Myron into the team, even though he never got to play professional basketball because of his knee. It was a bit far fetched imho but it does get explained later on. There's blood found in Greg's house and later the dead body of a woman Greg had met is discovered. There's the usual load of intrigue and mysteries plus our favourite secondary characters.

It seems, in Myron Bolitar's world, that everyone is an off-balanced smart ass, including Myron. Does everyone crack wise? Is everyone an eccentirc? (Then again, Myron is surrounded by New Yorkers and Jerseyites, so maybe.) In the case of "Fade Away", however, the wise cracks and weirdos may all lead to the solution surrounding the disappearance of an unhinged, famous (and famously unhinged) NBA player, Greg Downing. When the trail leads to the bludgeoned corpse of a woman near Columbia University, things aren't so funny suddenly. And when Myron, Win and Esperanza find themselves at the wrong end of a gun--or guns, I should say--things get quite serious. Enough said about the plot. This is a mystery and it's written by Harlan Coben: you do the math.What I found intriguing though was the title. In the Bolitar series, the title is restricted to, and naturally stems from, Myron's occupation or from the sport in which his client is active: golf, tennis, etc. In this case, a fade away is a type of basketball jumpshot. But other things are fading away or have already disappeared. Obviously, Myron's very short-lived basketball career, as well as his come-back in this novel, belong to the past. The misguided efforts of a criminal, radical 1970s group (also trying to make a come-back, maybe) belong to history. Myron's conflicted feelings about Jessica are haunted by their previous entanglement. In one poignant scene, Myron ponders his Boston Celtic heroes, John Havlicek and Larry Bird, and how their careers are now relegated to "Basketball History". In the same chapter, he even reflects on his hometown of Livingston, NJ and the enormous changes it has undergone imperceptibly, and how his own parents will one day be among those no longer occupying it. These sad, reflective moments temper the seeming frivoulous jokes and comments by the characters, and give the novel a haunting aspect which I have not seen in other books in the Bolitar series. As with other Coben mysteries, I highly recommend "Fade Away".(

Five stars says it all. I haven't yet been able to figure out "who done it" in a Myron Bolitar book!! I'm still saying dear writer that you were a policeman/private investigator/Attorney in your past life. How you fold it all together in the end is mind boggling!! The in depth, intermingling of the story line continues just out of grasp until you bring it all together at books end. Then, you always throw a little jewel in at the end such as Wyn showing up at "who's house!!" OMG!!!! Well loved again, Mr. Coben, Well loved!!!!

If you're a fan of Robert Crais' Elvis, you'll really, really enjoy Myron Bolitar. I thought, when ordered the first Bolitar novel and discovered he was a sports agent, that I would be disappointed. I was as wrong as I could be. His first two novels, Deal Breaker and Drop Shot, were excellent, but Fade Away, which I just finished, was outstanding. Easy to see why it won the Edgar. Terrific, witty writer, and a damned fine plotter. Highly recommend.

Please pray for my soul and pray for an even deeper conversion.

However, she herself recognizing the value of her life as an example to the faithful, has not left us without guidance and knowledge of her life. Reading this book will draw you into the life of a woman whose "Yes" again, filled with humility, has changed the course of the world. This book will share some of her most intimate and interior dispositions as she lived her life in total accord with the Father's will. That having been said, it was by no means an easy life, but one that anyone can learn and benefit from. Understanding Mary further helps us to understand, know and love her Son. This book is pure gift!

It also gives us insight into the home lifeof our Lord, Jesus when he was on earth. Finally, some information on St. Joseph !The many examples Mary sets for us will help me to live a better life.This book has brought me closer to our Blessed Virgin Mary andour Lord, Jesus Christ.

Before I begin this review I have to say some things about any book written by a Mystics. First, they have been approved by Rome in this way: the work does not contradict the Catholic teachings in any way; there is nothing in the work that will lead Catholics away from the Church; the reader is not under any obligation to believe anything that is written by the Mystics; and finally, works of the Mystics are NOT to be considered the fifth gospel, they are merely writings of people who CLAIM some personal closeness with God, one of the Saints, or with Mary herself.Having said that, this work is a very good read. Much of what is said about Mary can be correlated to things said of her in the Bible - but bear in mind that Mary stayed in the background where she wanted to be and therefore little is known about her private life. Luke is a very good source for information about the Holy Family and Mary herself. I think that anyone would truly enjoy this work given the prohibitions and cautions previously stated.

I first encountered this book in You tube, Audiio book. It is great to have and re-read it while you meditate.

Well written and very descriptive. I believe in the Church's teachings about private revelation. With that said, this book can truly enhance your faith. The parts concerning Christ's passion and death are difficult to read, but a necessity for the devout Christian during Holy Week. I would recommend.

Grateful for these mystics and their encounters with Mary, the mother of God. Now we know the rest of the story of salvation.

Flexible soft-cover but sturdy enough to withstand traveling (long-haul flights in a stuffed backpack, etc.). This book contains a wide variety of every sort of puzzle, including unique riddles and jokes of a kind we'd never seen before. We'd expected a book of solid puzzles, but were pleasantly surprised to get something new on many pages! The level is good, I'd say, for children between around 8-11; my boy is a fairly advanced 8 1/2 year old who has completed lots of crosswords, sudoku, etc, and these puzzles were perfect for him and I could see the level would be enjoyable for a couple more years yet.

My daughter just didn't get interested in it. It was too difficult for her and even when I tried to help I had a little trouble with quite a few. The answers are in the back but that takes the fun out of it completely. However the book is nicely made and illustrations are good.

I love the book questions, great learning experience for any child. I don't put age on intelligence. So I'd say it can be for any age range, just ask the person you buy it for if they want to do the puzzles and see what happens! This book is very good.

My 7 yo grandson and I complete a couple games every morning while we eat breakfast. By the time we go to his bus stop he is fully engaged for school. The puzzles are fun and make you think.

My grandson loves the puzzles this book contains.....

My 10 yr old daughter has finished this book from cover to cover. Love.

My 9 year old daughter LOVES these books. Good quiet activity to do at night before bed. Some are a little tricky, but luckily all of the answers are in the back in case you need help.

Before you buy this classic Landmark edition, please consider the newer, Cambridge translation by Jeremy Mynott.As someone who read both editions (don’t ask), I much prefer the Cambridge version. It was translated and released in 2013, while the Landmark edition was translated in 1874. Landmark’s Victorian English is dense and difficult, while Cambridge uses simpler language and – most importantly – more sentence breaks. The extra periods help prevent your eyes from glazing over as your brain tries to remember what was going on five lines ago in the same sentence. (If you want more details on the differences between the Landmark and Cambridge editions, see my review of the Thucydides: The War of the Peloponnesians and the Athenians (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought).)I’m sure I would have given up on Thucydides had I been restricted to the Landmark edition, thus depriving me of a great adventure in politics, psychology, history, and war. Reading Thucydides really did change my life, and I encourage you to follow my footsteps down the easier path.

"The Landmark Thucydides" is the first book in Robert Strassler's excellent series of annotated translations of ancient history. As of the writing of this review, the series also has Herodotus, Arrian, and Xenophon's "Hellenika". What makes these editions so different are the various additions that make the text easier to understand. There are maps every few pages, summaries of each section, timelines of the years of the history, and notes to explain difficult to interpret passages."The Peloponnesian War" needs these extras more than most. Thucydides jumps around in his narrative and uses place names that are unfamiliar to even learned classicists. The book ends with some short essays on relevant topics, such as Spartan institutions and trireme warfare. Thucydides is an altogether difficult author, but this edition makes him easily accessible without dumbing him down. Several prominent Greek historians have contributed to this series, which shows it is not only for students, but also for more serious readers. I recommend this edition of Thucydides above all others.

Seriously, I read this book and it feels like I'm reading about WWII or some other world-changing event. Thucydides was an Athenian general and writes in a militant, matter-of-fact way. Since he doesn't flourish anything, the events he describes seem human, even if a little cold. The Peloponnesian War was the peak of Classical Greece. The Athenian Empire dominated the Aegean Sea and the Peloponnesian League balanced it out, not always peacefully. The war between the two lasted 30 years and exposed the Greeks to a level of violence and misery they never even imagined. I can't even get into it since it would seem fake and just bleh. You have to read it from Thucydides himself, who knew the Greek leaders, fought in the war, and recorded it all without any pretensions. Everyone should read this book just to see what it means to go to war.

This is an amazing book however the Kindle edition is severely lacking. I am reading it on my Kindle Fire. The maps are included but unreadable in their present form. Zooming in to the maps only creates very blurry images. The Kindle edition includes the paragraph numbers and summaries (a good feature) however, their location alternates between being located after the paragraph to before the paragraph. The foot notes are included at the end of each book/chapter however there is no link or numbering to connect them back to the writing. Most of the footnotes refer to the maps, which can't really be read anyways, however there is some additional information included in those notes that would be helpful for the reader to access. I own this book in the print edition (along with the other books in this "Landmark" series). It is an awesome book and worthy of 5 Stars but the Kindle edition really needs to be improved before I can rate it above a 3.

If your primary interest is in learning the history of the Peloponnesian War, I would recommend Donald Kagan's masterful book on the subject. Kagan dedicated his career to the study of the war and his book is a modern masterpiece. I had the good fortune to read Kagan before reading the "The Landmark Thucydides." It made the whole experience much more enjoyable. I understood what was going on and did not have to spend so much time with the Landmark footnotes.If you want to take the big leap and take on Thucydides, the Landmark Edition is a must. While not as strong as Kagan, the introduction and scholar essays are first class and go a long way to making Thucydides approachable to the modern reader. However, what takes The Landmark Edition to another level is the footnotes and maps. If you have the patience and take the time to really study the text, you can really develop a deep understanding of Thucydides.Finally, Robert Strassler is a real hero. Let us hope that he is able to produce more Landmark Editions. In my book, Strassler has covered himself with glory and has done the reading public a great service. Highly recommended!
