I used this book in an introductory grad-level bioinformatics course. No programming knowledge was necessary to enroll and we learned python as part of this course. This book was required, but I only used it for the first week or two of class. Really not that helpful for my needs.My main issue with the book is the general lack of editorial feel. Most chapters are topical case studies which also describe how to do a task in perl (there is a companion website which provides equivalent python scripts). Especially since we were learning Python in this course and considering that the field is moving towards object-oriented languages, I rarely needed to reference this book.There are several better introductions to genomics, so if you aren't interested in the 'how-to' of this field then I recommend passing on this book. Even if you are interested, consider other resources before this one.

Use this a a desk reference to leverage new genomics tools. Relatively well written summary - starting point. Strongly recommended

This is a useful and informative text; although I won't be using it "extensively" until next semester, I have scanned the chapters and it appears to have the right content for studying the subject thoroughly. I look forward to supplementing class lectures with the info contained in this text.

I wish they made a pocket version

I bought this book for nursing school knowing aot of people recommended it. The content is good but if you want to take advantage of the free 1 year online access DON't buy the kindle edition it comes with no access code. I bought this because we are required to have our books on our tablets but also wanted access to updated information. I was looking at buying a care plan book as well (the one we are supplied by Elsevier leaves alot to be desired). I will not buy kindle again.

A must-have for a nurse. I prefer the paperback to the phone app. Every week I use it at least once. The only complaint is that is doesn't contain all classes of drugs. Except for one medication that was listed two editions back that isn't present now, I love this book. It is designed for a nurse and quick reference.

As a nursing student, a drug book is essential. I love this book, much more than the Mosby's book that my program suggests we purchase. The information is laid out in an easy to follow fashion. The only problem I have is that (at least on the kindle version) there is a large section (about 200 pages or so) that is out of place. For example, the page labeled as 612 is listed as 554 electronically. This means that some of the drugs are not in alphabetical order which can make locating some of them difficult. Basically my book goes drugs starting with E, G, F, then H (and then the pages are back on track).

It's heavy and the size/shape of a bible - which is exactly what it has been for me. I am a nursing student and I don't dare go to a clinical without this reference! It is simple to use (just look in the index and then go straight to the page), accurate, accessable, and comprehensive. It also has great reference appendices that I have used so many times. The paper is thin but surprisingly durable. This book has taken a beating and I expect to keep buying new editions as long as I'm in the nursing field.

As always, Davis Drug Guide remains the best.Keeping up to date on all the new meds and the appendix that is so important for all nurses, while trying to keep it compact enough to keep near while on the floor. I like that it still includes the drip rates and basic medical math information along with everything else.My first copy was as a student, and I find that after trying many others this is still my favorite.

I love this book, however I do think you could get away with using the Nursing Central website (it uses the Davis's Drug Guide & has everything the book has). I started to do that when I was pressed for time when I was making my drug cards for clinical. I like physical copies of books, which is why I purchased this, but I do think you could use the other website to get all your information. Plus, you may not always have the internet to rely on!

If you're a nursing student and having to write out drug cards for school, this is the book to use! It gives you patient teaching info, nursing considerations, even evaluations. Plus it comes with a code for only usage. Totally worth the price.

I see this book as fulfilling two different purposes. First, if you want to double-check the medicine you're being prescribed. Second, for use in a world without hospitals and medical personnel when you may be forced to self medicate. In both cases its a potential life saver.

Interesting to hear Ozzy 's side of things, such as him biting the head off of a dove, and a bat, and shooting his chickens. His retelling of stories will make you laugh out loud. Accidentally woke my husband up a few times while reading. The story of the thermometer had me rolling, as did the banana story. He talks about his different jobs, his family, his addictions, the music, and basically how he is just a normal man who happens to be the prince of darkness. Just because he's rich and famous doesn't mean he doesn't take a s*** like the rest of us lolI ordered the book used, and it came in great condition considering how it was a library book in its previous life, which means it has that awesome old book smell that I love so much. All in all, an awesome purchase!

I owned the first 2 Black Sabbath albums. I watched all the Ozzy show episodes on VH1. I knew there was an incidence he admitted to biting the head off of a dove, but he had said publicly he was in a drug black-out at the time and basically regretted it. So I thought he’d changed, had become a lot more lovable and rational off the drugs. In the description of the book he says these things “haunted me.” Yet in the actual book, he turns the cruel things he’s done into a big joke.I got past the fish-killing episode in grade school early on in the book, thinking that was a very strange, ugly thing for a child to do. Then I got to the fire episode where he claimed his mother’s false teeth flew out of her mouth so hard after she coughed that they smashed through a window. At that point I thought, oh no, is this going to be another Stephen Tyler hallucinogenic rambling where he just makes up outrageous stories?Not hardly a page later I come to the part where he says “I got a job I enjoyed…. I was a natural at killing animals.” He goes on for 7 pages about how he enjoyed his job at a slaughterhouse where he worked for a year and a half. The way he jokes all the way through it is absolutely sickening. He goes into detail about the killing, calling it his favorite job, and how he loved to play “his favorite practical joke” using the eyeballs of dead cows. Another fun thing to do was play with stomachs of “crippled old sheep.” He jokes about how the cows struggled to live, “at one point I thought I’d be the one who’d end up in a bun, covered with ketchup.” About his job killing pigs he says “they say the only thing wasted on a pig is the squeal,” and how what he did to the pigs was worth it for a good meal, etc. One story sounds like a joke with a punchline he made up, where he claims he was barbecuing steaks one day when some cows came over from the next field and he told them “I’m sure it’s no relation.” Hilarious, right?It was definitely not the words of someone looking back and wondering how they could have ever thought and acted like that. It’s like he’s bragging about how insanely cruel he was. And there was no drugs to blame for any of this either. What kind of psychopath would enjoy killing animals and give no indication of feeling bad about it? At that point I put the book down in disgust.I don’t understand the 700 almost-all 5-star ratings, except to simply say Ozzy is rich and rich people can buy things. Not a single 1-star rating – yet. How anybody could realistically give this 5 stars after reading those 7 pages of jokes about killing animals is unfathomable.We really need to stop making heroes out of these twisted “celebrities” in society who think animal cruelty is funny or acceptable just because we admire their sportsmanship (Michael Vick) or their musicianship (Ozzy). (And yes, I’m a long-time vegan, for anyone asking, and no, I’m not a member of PETA.)

Ozzy paints his life, from his poor childhood, to the early days of rock-n-roll, to the height of fame and fortune. All in his hilarious style that made me laugh my 'arse' off - the most funny book I've read period, but also full of real-life wisdom. Since childhood, he had ADHD and dyslexia (he could not read), but from the beginning of Black Sabbath though his solo career, most of his albums hit top-10 in both England and America, and millions of fans to this day. An incredibly gifted man, Ozzy is.

Who but the Prince of Darkness could have given us this humorous, brutally honest and darkly compelling autobiography. Reading it brought out a rollercoaster of emotions. I was in turns amused, fascinated and saddened by Ozzy's stories of his bizarre adventures. As he himself admitted, by all reckoning he missed dying upon a number of occasions. Somehow he survived, grew up and faced down his demons.A cautionary tale, but also one about the enduring love of his wife and family who were with him during his darkest hours.

Well written amazing tales of an iconic rock and roll musician. Ozzy is hilarious (as most people know) and the stories here are tales of excess and overindulgence. There is another side of Ozzy that comes to light while reading the book: he is truly a nice guy who avoids confrontation at all costs. The early Black Sabbath years are insightful and allows the reader to step into the creative process.Some of the tales of sin and debauchery drag on but the amount of drugs and booze consumed by Ozzy is legendary.All in all I highly recommend this book to those who can't get enough of the backstage, up close and personal views of old time rock and rollers.

Great story for fans of this genre. However some of his most hard-core disciples may be disappointed by a component of it that I won't reveal, and the meek might be mortified by others. All the usual rock bio sex, drugs and general craziness & irresponsibility, etc. but very humorously and sensitively embellished and as well. Often at his own expense. I found myself almost daily sharing parts of it with friends. One of those enlightening books that I looked forward to reading from every day and where in the end the subject became someone who I think I'd like to know personally although before I couldn't have cared less...

I didn't enjoy this book as much as others written by Walter isaacson. I don't think there was anything wrong with the research or the writing. I did gain a stronger understanding of history and also great insights into the mind of Henry Kissinger. The problem may be that continuous analysis of Henry Kissinger's character flaws grew tiresome in such a long book. My next book choice will be something more uplifting.

This is a good survey of Kissinger's life. It is well documented and balanced in its presentation. Kissinger was a brilliant negotiator and foreign policy analyst; however, there is a major flaw in his life. How could a man who talked about being a victim of the holocaust be so insensitive to human suffering? His failure to prevent the bombing and eventual disaster in Cambodia is not addressed enough. Kissinger's lack of empathy and action in the slaughters in Bangladesh and Timor raise many doubts about his sincerity on human suffering. I feel pithy for this man. His brilliance never allowed for human consequences . Isaacson notes that Kissinger needed to be 10% less brilliant and 10% more honest. I think that he needed compassion for human suffering.

Having read several books by Walter Isaacson, I find him to be a good writer. Being an admirer of Kissinger and having a love of history, I expected this to be a perfect book for me. After reading about a fourth of it, I find that it is certainly well-researched but also a slow and difficult read. It is not a book one would read for pleasure but more for the serious history or biography buff.

Walter Isaacson is a master biographer. None of his books ever disappoint. Mr Kissinger on the other hand is a very polarizing character, and part of your enjoyment of the book may depend on your thoughts on him, Nixon and the cold war. I must say though, that my opinion of Kissinger changed drastically over the course of the book, which I think is a testament to this exceptionally well written biography.

Walter Isaacson, who has written esteemed biographies of Benjamin Franklin, The Wise Men, and Einstein, tackles the complex character of Henry Kissinger, academic, diplomat, and consultant. Kissinger is a difficult character to pin down, as Isaacson notes. He was devious, self-promoting, self-deprecating, intelligent, ambitious, and successful. The author interviewed over 150 people--including Kissinger himself--to gather information for this lengthy volume (767 pages of text).At the outset, Isaacson says (page 9): "Three decades after he left office, Henry Kissinger continues to exert a fascinating hold on the public imagination as well as intellectual sway over the nation's foreign policy conversation." He was a well-known apostle of "Realpolitik," emphasizing doing what had to be done to advance the national interest, balancing power with power, concerned more with accomplishing things than getting caught up in ideology and morality. Again, a realist as opposed to an idealist. And this is the tension that is described throughout the course of this powerful volume (page 15): ". . .Kissinger had an instinctive feel. . .for power and for creating a new global balance that could help America cope with its withdrawal syndrome after Vietnam. But it was not matched by a similar feel for the strength to be derived from the openness of America's democratic system or for the moral values that are the true source of its global influence."The book begins with a brief early biography of Kissinger, including the misery he experienced after the Nazis came to power and the departure of his immediate family from Germany when they came to understand how inhospitable that country was becoming for Jews. The book also notes that many of his relatives died during World War II, part of the Holocaust. There follows the tale of his adolescence, his military service, his graduate study, and his promising academic career.But the major portion of this book focuses on his role as National Security Advisor and then Secretary of State under Richard Nixon's presidency and Secretary of State under Gerald Ford. There is a relatively brief discussion in several chapters of his life after Nixon-Ford, as consultant, commentator, intellectual-without-portfolio.After having worked with Nelson Rockefeller as an advisor, it is somewhat surprising that he ended up serving one of Rocky's antagonists, Richard Nixon. The book traces the odd relationship between Nixon and Kissinger. Sometimes hard-edged and combative, sometimes oddly supportive of one another. The secretive Nixon and Kissinger as lone cowboy accomplished a great deal in foreign policy; however, their penchant for secrecy also created problems of its own. Kissinger could be viewed is devious (for telling different people things in such a way as for each to think that Kissinger was on his/her side), but he also earned the trust of many leaders as he invented "shuttle diplomacy." Leaders might become exasperated with his style and his deviousness, but he was effective in a number of key instances. Examples worth exploring and reflecting upon in the book include the negotiations with North Vietnam to extricate the United States from a quagmire of its own making; the effort to end the Yom Kippur War in a manner that would stabilize the Middle East; the opening to China; détente with the Soviet Union.This is a biography that is worth investing time and energy into. It portrays Kissinger, warts and all, in a manner that illuminates this complicated individual. On some pages, one will think of railing against him; on other pages, one may well feel admiration for his strengths and accomplishments.

I have enjoyed Isaacson's biographies of Ben Franklin, Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein. With Kissinger, the style is different as it probably should be. Kissinger is unlike his other subjects. Every other subject has warmer sides, they seem more human - but this is what makes this an interesting book. Isaacson seems to capture Kissinger without judging him. I would recommend it for those who are interested in the Nixon era -an important era of US history often reported with a bias on either side.

Kissinger usually got it right, but not always. The withdrawal from Vietnam should have occurred much sooner than it did.

This a great read for anyone who grew up during the Cold War era and the fall of Communism. Isaacson clearly explains the clash of "American Ideals" and "real-politik" in shaping foreign policy. There is a lot of very interesting material on Watergate along with very vivid insights into the intellect and personality of Richard Nixon. Indirectly Kissinger helped precipitate the events that became one of the great scandals in American history. Henry Kissinger is a very complex and multi-dimensional individual; but in the final analysis he is can be understood. He spectacular successes and experienced several miserable failures with serious unintended consequences.In spite is the complexity of the subject matter and the broad sweep of events covered in this book, Kissinger: A Biography was a great read.
