After the excellent second volume, the third volume of Rat Queens takes a turn for the worse, in more ways than one. After being contacted that Hannah's dad is on trial for his life at mage university, the Rat Queens go on a journey to rescue him. Things....don't go as planned.To put it simply, this volume has a major problem of 'show, don't tell'. Hannah is the main focus, and the story explains that she's part of, let's say 'political sect' that supports research into demons. It kind of tries to parallel religious discrimination and schools shutting down subjects they don't agree with. The problem is, everything the story shows that the school is right and demons are inherently evil. Have you seen X-men? It's kind of like a bad volume of X-men.The other characters don't do much. Betty sorta gets a backstory without any details, Dee explains whats going on with N'rygoth, and Vi gets to do absolutely nothing. The ending pretty much destroyed the status quo, so I have no idea where the series goes from here.

The best I can say for this is "meh" and that makes me very sad. I LOVED Rat Queens 1 & 2. Couldn't wait for #3 to come out. Sat down & read it as soon as it came in the mail and now, I'm actually angry at how mediocre it was.The first two volumes were fairly tight stories with character growth and depth. The main story line here, such that it was, was just a big prelude to the next book ... which would have been fine if they hadn't spent 50% of the pages on little side stories that neither progressed the plot nor helped you understand the characters more. Not to mention all the time building up a character, making him important to the Queens, then killing him off screen. The entire thing just felt like the authors were adding filler because they didn't know what to do with the story at this point.Also not helping is the switch in artists. The new art isn't bad but it really doesn't match the style of the story. Gone are the hard angles, detailed backgrounds and focus on the character's expressions. In its place are big eyes, big boobs and blurry smears. The artist is obviously skilled but that overly rounded, almost cell-sharded art is not what I expected under a Rat Queen's title.In this case you should judge the book by its cover, cause that's exactly what you get with this book and it's a shame.

This one's a bit different than its predecessors. As you may have gathered if you read my other RQ blurbs--I love this series. They're the first series to hook me on comics, in all honesty. In all cases, as soon as they fell into my fingers, I devoured the lot of them. Anti-heroes, genuine female characters, an engagingly action-packed story and rich art sealed a package that was simply unbeatable.This third chapter, however, is lacking in some of the things I loved most in its predecessors: character growth, as well as short story level action mingling with a contrary devotion to depth despite the short binding. In Demons, however, the whole overarching story seems to have stumbled into "middle book" syndrome, feeling like the whole thing is a build to something else. Despite a quick-paced intro that sets the ground for huge events to come, the story at large never really stands on its own two feet. It felt like filler, honestly, and even big moments were undercut by a swiftness that felt almost like...needless rush. Nothing was resolved, and certain events felt like they were happening "just because"--not for a purpose.Unlike many, the artist change didn't particularly trip me up. I noticed the switch in artistic form, of course, but it didn't detract anything from the work. Had it been the form its readers had first been introduced to, I doubt it should have become the explosive issue it has become in some circles. The art is different, but it's fine.The sharp humor is still there. Whatever qualms I have with the direction of story, the language remains wittily on point. I may have tripped a little bit getting through this chapter, but I'm still looking forward to future adventures--I just hope the hiatus isn't too long lasting! I'm chomping at the bit for more of that energy that first captivated me, and I still believe in Wiebe's ability to deliver it.

My husband and I have differing opinions on this one. We both loved the original art so much, and feel that the characters all have a bit more generic, "eye candy" look to them in this volume, which was disappointing. My husband really enjoyed the story, but I feel that it was a bit too spread out. I would have much preferred each aspect of the story be delved into a little deeper before moving on to follow another aspect of the plot. I still enjoyed it, but between the plot hitting points and moving on so quickly and the new way that the characters are drawn, it just wasn't as incredible as the first two volumes, for me, anyway. We both really enjoyed the story about Braga; she's one of our favorites so we were glad to be able to read more about her.

I LOVED the art in the first two volumes, and the queer ass kicking kinky narrative. I don't know what happened, but the art in this one seems overly directed towards the male gaze. Way too bulbous all around - too many pointless "tit shots" and the art went from being elegantly sexy to cartoonish and pornographic (not in a hot way - in a gross way). Please bring back the artistic style of the first two volumes!!!!!

This time, we step out of the Dungeons & Dragons-esque story to go a little deeper into the background for the Queens. And that would be where the author begins to take several liberties I fell, in my opinion, took away some of the fantasy settings a little too much. We're given a very cliche 21-century college life arc which is related to a fantasy setting only by character's reliance on magic and presence of fantasy races.But that's just me. Maybe you didn't mind at all if it had bubbles of modernity which clash heavily with the fantasy undertones.

It's good to know that a couple of the drives I've been on during my wanderings of the state are represented in this book. Better yet, it's great to know they were represented properly.For those who enjoy travelling this book offers trips a family could take heading East-West across the central part of the state whether than be off, or even ON I-90 or the back roads behind the glorious mountains and forests this state has to offer.Again, having driven several of these prior to owning this book I can vouch for the accuracy. The one thing I wish was offered would have been a larger overall map with the areas annotated for a better options of choices in a spur of the moment detours.

I live in the greater Seattle area. At the beginning of last year I traded in my bad*** liter sportbike and got a nice light sport tourer.Now that I can ride for more than two hours at a time I've been able to take multi-day trips around the Pacific NW.I was not aware of over 50% of the roads contained in this book. To me it's an outstanding value.The book is well written and thorough.After reading it I bought a second one and gave it to a good riding buddy.

I can’t even begin to tell you how perfect this book is. It’s so deliciously dark and twisted, and my heart was pounding so hard at times I thought it would escape my chest. Lucian was such a dark and broody character, and his story was both devastating and beautiful all at once. Gypsy was a wild animal that didn’t want to be tamed, and Lucian was just the thing she needed to save her life.I’m not going to lie - I bawled like a baby while reading this. I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room and huddle with it under my blanket at the same time. I had this crazy need to devour the entire thing as fast as I could just as I needed to take it slow and soak every last detail in.I’ve been in love with Zavarelli’s words since the very first book of hers I picked up, and I’m thrilled this book not only lived up to my expectations, but surpassed them more than I could imagine possible.Do yourself a favor. Pick up this book and read it. Just make sure you buckle in for a wild ride.

Gyspy is FIESTY! Lucian is BROODING! and CONFESS is INCREDIBLE!I wasn't expecting this story to unfold the way it does. It's Unpredictable! I kept thinking I knew what twists the plot was going to take and then NOPE not the way it goes. It was so good.The way Lucian and Gypsy come together just adds to the mystery of this story. They both have tortured pasts that it defines who they are now and explains so much of why they do what they do for family and friends even strangers.Lucian and Gypsy's connection doesn't come quickly it builds throughout the story until you can feel their bond and their passion for one another. Their relationship is perplexing and complicated, but they definitely burn up the pages.All the characters are intriguing. Gypsy's sister Birdie is just as bratty as Gypsy if not more. Ace seems like he's Mr. Alpha on steroids and Father Hawk is an enigma. There are so many others I want to read more about.Confess took me on a thrilling journey I gasped, I laughed, I got mad, I cried and I smiled! A must read!

First, and important to me, this book is extremely hard to read if you have any problems with low contrast. The main text is in a small font and grey as opposed to black, and the ingredients are listed in a light sort of rust color. Pretty to look at but not practical.On the other hand, the information on using a rice cooker and the different types, as well as the recipes themselves, are quite wonderful. So I ended up buying the book twice, once as a paperback and again as a Kindle book so that I could read it. Nice for Amazon but not so nice for my pocketbook. Thus if you have any issues seeing light print, and you own a Kindle or an iPad with the Kindle app, then buy it that way. The book itself is recommended; the presentation is abominable.

It never occurred to me that I could cook anything but rice in a rice cooker. Imagine my amazement to discover all kinds of dishes in this Kindle cookbook. From breakfast dishes to veggies, desserts and whole grains - there are so many recipes I want to try I almost don't know where to begin.The book is well-written, the introduction about rice cookers excellent and the recipes really easy to follow. As I skimmed through this book, I went (of course) to the desserts! and found a dish I've never heard of or tasted - stewed blueberries. Clearly, this is going to be my first try.Thanks for introducing me to a whole new world of cooking.

I have made several of the recipes in this book and continue to be extremely impressed. Many of the recipes are quite simple, and if esoteric ingredients are called for they are explained and described and are the focal point of the recipe. More than any other cookbook, this book gave me a food education as well. I learned an incredible amount about rice and about a variety of cultural adaptations of rice without feeling like a captive audience.This book is extremely well organized and easy to understand and follow. The shopping section at the end with internet sources to purchase ususual rices, spices, and vegetables is excellent. I am recommending rice cookers highly, and in the same breath, I make sure to recommend this book. We have given it as a gift at several weddings.Almost 4 years after first purchasing this book, I am still using it more than any other book on my shelf (although "How To Cook Everything" may be gaining). When I first got the book, I owned a cheap, Target on/off cooker. I now have a high end nonstick fuzzy logic cooker with a steamer tray. I have utilized many, many recipes and have many yet to go. It's hard to try new recipes when every recipe tried bears repeating. Buy this book!

I bought a rice cooker, learned the basics of preparing rice and then wanted to expand my skills. So I bought a few cookbooks but this is the ONLY one that has recipes my whole family loves, so much so that we use it at least 3-5 times a week and never feel like we're eating the same thing. The recipes aren't just for rice but for all sorts of grains and vegetables and fruits as well. In fact, I'm ready to throw out my crockpot because the meals prepared in the rice cooker are much better, don't have that overcooked, stewed taste you can get with a crockpot and have all the convenience and ease that I need with my busy schedule. The directions are clear and the recipes range from the simple (plain cooked grains) to the more complex (rice with coconut and currants... or grits with cheese and spices ) The ultimate test of a good cookbook, of course, is getting compliments and raves about the food. Every time I've made a recipe from this book, the food has been devoured quickly. We rarely have leftovers and my son's friends even make a point of looking in the kitchen to see if the rice cooker is turned on ( yes, the recipes in this cookbook are THAT good).

Total all inclusive rice cooker book. I need to step up and use some of the many recipes in the book. I have a Great Panasonic rice cooker with the steamer but have just not used it to make an all in one meal. The book is very thorough and describes any and all types of rice and what to do with them. Great efforts are made to link the recipe with the correct kind of cooker. There is something in here for everyone.Highly recommended

Good book, and I have bought and read and am reading all of this author's books. The hero is always a good, honorable and capable man who treats good women like they should be treated. In the 1870's and 80's women had almost no rights, and could be beaten by husbands and generally mistreated and the justice system was no help - this was because of weak or NO laws to help the fair sex. The hero sees it another way, and he is totally hard working, honorable and KIND man. There is always a love story. It is refreshing to know that there were and somewhere there are still HONEST, hard working and GOOD men in America.

It seemed like Ted couldn't forget Elizabeth and still loved her despite the fact that she was dead. At first it seemed like he really loved his wife Kate until he brought Elly to his home to live. He actually fell in love with her. It seemed he encouraged her to love him as well. It seemed the Kate approved of her husband's feelings of love for Elly. The other thing I don't understand is here his so called beloved wife is pregnant and on her death bed and he couldn't wait to go back to work .He didn't really show much worry or concern for her. I would have thought he would have stayed by her beside worrying about her if he truly loved her. I just don't like the way C.J. Petit wrote this about one man that seemed to love two other women more than his wife

This is the fourth of CJ Petit's books I have read. It is so enjoyable to have honorable men and women as the main characters. Life is like that, despite a common genre of every character being complex and so flawed. To achieve mastery of yourself and become a soul of noble and strong character is what life has to offer us. What a fine goal and Mr. Petit's characters achieve that. The reason for only four stars is that there is a pattern of rehearsing what the main character has done. The book could be shorter in my opinion and a more pleasant read. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it immensely .

As usual these books habe lots of action and a great hero and heroine. But this one got a little too Sister Wives for me. Didnt enjoy the whole group love going on. Just don't believe any woman would be this understanding, no matter how secure. Just hated that part of the book.But I've read several of this author's books now and i really enjoy them, even though they are a bit dry and methodical.Also, he always has editing issues, but that doesn't bother me. What did bother me was the "big girl" who got shot during the town hold up. The author never addressed that afterwards. He also made a big deal about having a dinner party in the new kansas city house that never took place. Kind of sloppy storytelling there.But I will read more by this author.

I'm writing this review covering all of Petit's books that I have completed. I like his characters. They are strong men and women. He does tend to follow a pattern with women. There's always severe abuse somewhere in his stories. Also, most villains pee their pants when faced by the hero.I found the a lot of measures of time, miles, land,etc to be, often, unrealistic.Overall, I enjoyed the books and would recommend them to any fan of western stories.

It was ok. The author has some writing talent, but this was a pretty typical bounty hunter story with much of the action a bit unrealistic and in my opinion, the story really started to drag as more sub plots were added. Sorry, Mr. Petit, but I was ready for the story to end half way through the book. Maybe you should consider splitting it into two books. Also there were a lot of grammatical errors and typos. They didn't really distract from the story, but a good proofreader would make the book a much more professional work.

As usual Mr Petit wrote a wonderful western. I still think he uses the names of his characters too much as people just don't say the name of the person they are conversing with in every sentence. I compensate by mentally just deleting names as I read. I still know who is talking without that annoyance. I gave this story only four stars, not because the story is lacking, but because Mr Petit needs a proof reader desperately. There were so many needed corrections that it detracted from the story.

Yes, he has the right "formula" to keep me interested. A little more romance to enliven the story than many Western writiers have. Petit's plots are varied and never the same. I've learned a lot as his characters use their many different kinds of guns. Using the privy, watering and brushing his horses are never forgotten. His women characters often are strong and intelligent, too.
